Canadiens acquire Mathieu Schneider

The Atlanta Thrashers have traded defenceman Mathieu Schneider to his former team, the Montreal Canadiens.

In exchange, the Thrashers receive a second round draft pick in 2009 and a third round selection in 2010. In addition to Schneider, Montreal receives a conditional pick at this year's draft.

Good pick-up for the Habs.

The way I see it, Boo's not going back to Florida past this season.

They should be trying to get the best deal available for him right now.

Yeah, but for a team that is so devoid of defense as it is, are they really gonna give up the only good one they got?

Well, this is the same team that pretty much gave away Roberto Luongo. Nothing they do would surprise me at this point. I just feel bad for whoever does go back to Florida in exchange for Boo.

I don't quite understand this trade for the Canadiens. They probably could've recieved a similar player in talent, for half the salary and pricetag. He's not the player he once was. He's considered an offensive player, but take a look at those numbers. Awful.

His leadership is quite valuable, I'll admit that. He'll definitely help on the powerplay, but I'm still convinced that they could've acquired a better defenseman for a 2nd and 3rd pick.

We get a conditional pick as well in the deal, so essentially we flipped Huet for Schneider (depending on the playoff success). His salary comes off the books at the end of the year, but he's the solid leader/offensive defenseman we need on the PP along with Markov. I think it was a good deal from the Canadiens standpoint, and not to mention you'll have terrible numbers playing on a team like the Thrashers.
