Who should be the Bears Starting Quarterback?

Well?

We all have opinions. They are all very divisive. I have been posting on this and I will try to restrain myself so that we can get to discussion and not a screamfest.

As I see each asset:

Rex Grossman Postiives: Great arm. Really. He can make every throw. It's why he wows everybody in practice. He is also a hard worker and a student of film (more on this later) and wel liked by teammates and coaching staff. Tremendous play action ability. Can throw off this to the skinny post at will if the defense bites. If the defense bites at all on play action he will own the defense.

Res Grossman Negatives: Inexplicable decisionmaking. Inexplicable ability to make mistakes (see: taking the ball from under center). Cannot audible. Cannot pre read a defense. Short. Not very mobile. Bad fourth quarter numbers. Very succeptible to up the middle pass rush.

Now for the rest:

Brian Griese assets: Highest career QB rating of any Bear QB (ever?). Unbelievably intelligent. Not known for a great arm but it is good. A multi year veteran.

Brian Griese negatives: Has jumped around a lot. That can't be good. Makes some mistakes. Has had personal problems that restricted his career in the past. Although, after Denver, he has never been in a stable organization setting. He would still be in Tampa if they could have paid him. Still. . .

Kyle Orton Assets: Arm is okay. On intermediate routes he is very good. Obviiouslly, loves the shotgun. Intelligent. Made surprisingly few mistakes in 15 games as a Rookie. This was also due to gameplanning but Kyle did execute that gameplan. Can make throws down field and is underrated in this aspect. Is taking the game seriously now. Very muc so.

Kyle Orton Negatives: Hard to say. We only saw him play as a rookie. Kyle looks better now than then. He obviouslly was raw in his rookie season. There were many stories that he partied too much in his rookie season. This may or may not have led to his demotion despite the winning record. This could have run deep in the lockerroom.

That's how I see them. Rtae them how you like. I believe that Griese should start because history says he should. His numbers are better and though he wasn't in as many playoff games, he played in a much much much harder division.

At first, Grossman, but he should be on a short leash. Simply because if this guy can gain some consistency and improve his descision making he could easily be a pro bowl QB.

Seriously though - Rex is going to the Pro Bowl. You heard it here first.

No but seriously i hope Grossman pans out, he has all the potentiol in the world... But if not I hope one of our reserves are ready to step in and just be consistent, the rest will take care of itself

Grossman for now. But with an extremely short rope.

In fact no rope. He should be told he's on the Johnson rope.
Zero tolerance.
Any unforced, game changing error and he gets "Tanked."

Orton's biggest negative is an almost complete lack of mobility. As mobile as Rex isn't, he's much more so than Griese or Orton.

Grossman all the way.

Rex... Griese is not the type of quarterback that will lead you to the superbowl... He's too conservative, and although rex can be too aggressive and wild at times... i'd rather have him throw an intercecption going for the win than griese and the offense going for the tie w/ a field goal if you catch my drift.

I'll stick to my guns - Grossman will be out by week 5. I think he'll stink it up just like every other time. Lovie tends to evaluate the season by quarters, so once he sees Rex make the same mistakes, he will start Griese. I think the Bears will still be 3-1 or 2-2 at that point though, so the season won't be ruined. - but our record will reflect the hard work of the defense and special teams.

I can understand alot of people's loyalty to Rex. He *has* shown signs of promise, but I think that a combination of his bad decision making and the giant magnifying glass he is under right now will just make him a worse QB. Griese is our next best option, unless Orton has *really* become that much better. I think Griese could very well play the Dilfer role a la the Raven's Super Bowl run. No doubt about that.

I think Griese may not be the best leader, but with this team we may not need him to...

If he did need to come in and take over, all we'd need him to do is be consistent, he's got a great offense around him, he doesnt have to be tom brady, just consistent...

I think a consistent QB can lead this team to a championship... Everything else is in place... Strong O and weapons, Best Special Teams, Best D...

All we need is consistency from a QB not a star... Anything more is a plus...

Put me down for Griese. With Rex in, the defense is more likely to have to bail him out. With Griese's more conservative ball management, it gives the defense a chance to rest sometimes instead of getting an interception and then going back on the field because Rex gave it right back. While I would love to have a QB with a great arm bring "The Greatest Show On Turf"(or maybe we should call it "The Chicago Air Show") to Soldier field. I would much rather not have to invest in ulcer medication.
