Defensive Comparison between Mikki Moore and Joe Smith

Post#1 » by nasbahceltic » Fri Feb 20, 2009 4:59 am

Anybody got any insight or some type of statistical analysis regarding the defensive comparison between Smith and Moore. We all know Smith is the better offensive player, but I was just curious as to which player is the better defender.

I know alot of people seem to think Moore is a better defender simply based upon his on court demeanor, but I seem to remember Big Al absolutely destroying this guy up in New Jersey a few times. Not saying those performances represent a total indictment of his defensive ability, but I'd like to hear what somebody w/ a little more knowledge on this topic has to say.

From an off the top of my head statistical perspective from the past two seasons (not including this one), I would say the main difference in Joe Smith plays defense whereas Mikki Moore - not so much.

Moore's game is Blount-esque. Maybe Blount-esque in a decent way and he probably has a better attitude, but especially factoring in that he was released with salary remaining on his contract - not held on to or picked up by another team that saw something in him - I don't really care for him.

I read on here about how he's not a great offensive player but an active defender - but acc to spreadsheets of analysis on my computer from the past two seasons - each of the past two seasons he has been a below average to poor defensive player past two season (not a liability, but still), and an above average to solid offensive player (nothing outstanding, but still), and he his game has appeared consistently similar between the past two seasons, indicating non-flukey results. His stats would probably improve on a better team where he could be utilized better, but....as I say above he was released with salary remaining on his contract - not held on to or picked up by another team that saw something in him.

Plus he's 33 years old and doesn't qualify as a vet so much as a guy like Joe Smith. In my spreadsheets, Joe Smith is about equally as good as Mikki Moore past two seasons, slightly better if anything. However looking at him versus Mikki Moore, its like the offensive and defensive scores can be switched. And he brings more of a vet presence.

I'm not sure he'll be available, but statistically the guy we want IMO is Rasho Nesterovic.

Well looks like this is going to be the new debate for the next few days or so. Here's a good write up on Smith v. Moore.

Smith is the better player, better shooter and while not a great defender he is better than Moore...

Miki Moore's PER **** His Man's PER ****** Miki Moore's NET PER
******* 9.7 ********************* 20.1 ********************* Minus 10.5

Joe Smith's PER ***** His Man's PER ******* Joe Smith's NET PER
****** 14.8 ******************** 17.3 ********************** Minus 2.6

Joe Smith is WAY BETTER than Mikki Moore (-2.6 vs. -10.5),
considerably better than Glen Davis (-2.6 versus -7.7),
and although a better shooter, about the same as Kendrick Perkins (-2.6 vs. -2.7).

Mikki Morre is gargage at both ends. He is tall and somewhat athletic.

Joe Smith is a pretty average defender he isn't going to hurt you but certainly not reputed defender, I think he would be better when paired with a Perk or KG. The big than with Joe is that he just makes you a better team on the floor. He is a good shooter, gets to the line and doesn't turn the ball over, you can't say those 3 things about any of the 3 guys who would replace in the line up.

Joe Smith is better at both ends. However, Mikki Moore is a nice fit against Cleveland. He does pretty well against the pick & pop bigs like Ilgauskus and he's just so much longer than anybody else Cleveland has.

True, but I'd still have Smith coming off the bench instead of Moore, if given the choice...
It's still 17 to 11!!!!
