The Magic acquired point guard Rafer Alston from the Rockets in a deal also involving the Memphis Grizzlies.

The Magic's deal softens the blow of losing Jameer Nelson to a potentially season-ending shoulder injury. And it keeps the East's No. 3 team behind Boston and Cleveland in the discussion.

Pistons coach Michael Curry said it will be hard for the Magic if Nelson is done for the year. "I think Rafer is good," Curry said. "I think the biggest thing with Jameer is that he's the leader of that team, so his leadership and guidance is what they're missing the most. They have some guys that can maybe do some of the things he does offensively, but I thought his leadership was the biggest thing."

The Nets lost a key reserve Thursday when an MRI taken on Jarvis Hayes' left thumb revealed torn ligaments.

He'll wear a splint for a week, and then be reevaluated.

The Knicks have some roster space after their trades, and Walsh said the team would begin looking at that today. He admitted Patrick Ewing Jr., who's in the NBDL, was a possibility.

"We'll take a look at the waiver wires [today]," Walsh said. "There are players that are being waived that are NBA players. We'll compare that with some of the guys that we've been looking at in the NBDL or anywhere else, and see who here could be a future player."

After yesterday's two trades, the Knicks are deeper and more athletic, and they also didn't sacrifice a chance to make a run at a big-name free agent in 2010.

The Knicks made two trades before the deadline, pulling off separate deals that netted them probable starting two-guard Larry Hughes and athletic backup big man Chris Wilcox. They packaged Tim Thomas, Jerome James and Anthony Roberson to Chicago for Hughes, and shipped Malik Rose and cash to Oklahoma City for Wilcox.

None of the players acquired is signed past next season, preserving the Knicks' 2010 salary cap options. The Knicks basically dealt one rotation player - perhaps their worst one in Thomas - to add two players who should be part of coach Mike D'Antoni's mix. It appears as if the moves are no-risk and contain at least a potentially decent reward. "I hope so," team president Donnie Walsh said when asked if he believed this better positioned the Knicks to make the playoffs. "I told you, you want to be competitive, but you don't want to interfere with being in the free-agent market the summer after next. So I hope that this will make us more competitive. I feel like it can."

After sending Sam Cassell to Sacramento Tuesday with cash for a conditional second-round draft pick, the Celtics essentially did the same thing with Patrick O’Bryant just before yesterday’s 3 p.m. NBA deadline. Technically, they sent O’Bryant to Toronto for Will Solomon, who then went to Sacramento with cash for the suddenly popular conditional second-round pick.

The Celtics lost Kevin Garnett to a knee injury late in the first half and faded in the stretch against the Jazz, falling, 90-85, last night.

Garnett's condition will be evaluated today and his status is undetermined for Sunday's game at Phoenix.

Garnett strained his right knee going for an alley-oop late in the second quarter and did not play in the second half. Garnett, who earned a jump ball by diving for a loose ball earlier in the second quarter, departed with 1:08 remaining. He then hopped on his left foot into the locker room.

"It's a long season and we're not going to take a risk," said coach Doc Rivers. "I love having him out there and he probably would have made a difference."

The Cavs did not update their injury report Thursday, but Delonte West looked good in the workout the club held at Humber College outside Toronto before flying to Milwaukee for tonight's game with the Bucks. West is technically listed as doubtful, but there appears to be a good chance he could make his comeback from a fractured wrist against the Bucks.

Ben Wallace is still termed questionable with stitches in his right arm. He did some work Thursday but was unable to shoot with his right arm, hinting he might need to miss another game.

Pistons Like Cap Space Heading Into Summer
With most teams looking to dump salaries, that left the Pistons out of the mix.

But come this summer, they'll be very much in the mix. Remember last summer when the Denver Nuggets were looking to dump salary and they traded Marcus Camby to the Clippers for second-round draft picks?

"When you have the cap space that we are going to have (as much as $23 million), you know you are going to be presented with every option out there," Dumars said.

Alston Move Has Magic Back In Title Race?
Veteran Anthony Johnson took over for Nelson, and the Magic also acquired Tyronn Lue. But the journeymen struggled against quicker guards and had trouble creating shots for teammates.

"We weren't really happy with our point-guard play at the time," Smith said. "And quite frankly, it wasn't necessarily just our point-guard play. Our point guard-play kind of trickled down, but really all of us kind of took a hit. "This gives us a better chance to compete at the level we think we're capable of competing in."

Smith said Coach Stan Van Gundy's familiarity with Alston — who played for the Heat in 2003-04 under Van Gundy in Miami — was a factor.

All-Star forward Danny Granger will miss 10 days to three weeks with a partial tendon tear in the sole of his right foot, which happened in the second quarter of Wednesday's loss to the Charlotte Bobcats.

Mike Dunleavy's ongoing right knee injury could force him to miss the rest of the season.

San Antonio (35-17) at Detroit (27-25) 8:00 pm EST AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- The San Antonio Spurs are beginning to look a little road weary. Thankfully, their season-high road trip ends against a pair of struggling opponents. The Spurs try to avoid a third straight loss Thursday when they visit the slumping Detroit Pistons. Forced away from the AT&T Center due to the annual appearance of the rodeo, San Antonio opened its eight-game trek with three wins its first four games. But after enduring a two-point loss to the Toronto Raptors in their final game before the All-Star break, the Spurs opened the second half with Tuesday's heart-breaking 112-107 overtime setback to the New York Knicks. San Antonio was without guard Manu Ginobili, who missed the game with a sprained right ankle. After undergoing tests on the injury, Ginobili could join the team in Detroit and be ready for Thursday's tilt. If not, the Argentine should be back in time for Saturday's contest against the Eastern Conference-worst Washington Wizards. Ginobili's presence would be bad news for the Pistons, who have dropped each of their last four games, including Tuesday's 92-86 home loss to the Milwaukee Bucks. Detroit astonishingly has lost seven of its last eight games at home, falling to 14-14 at The Palace at Auburn Hills this season.

SAN ANTONIO 83, DETROIT 79 -- AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Allen Iverson gave the San Antonio Spurs all they could handle on Thursday night. But even without Manu Ginobili, the Spurs survived and snapped a two-game skid. The Spurs knocked down five free throws over the final 58 seconds and buckled down on the other end to erase a one-point deficit and hold off the Pistons for an 83-79 triumph. The team announced earlier in the day that Ginobili would be out for two to three weeks with a stress reaction in his right leg. "That sucks. But we've done it before," Spurs forward Tim Duncan said. "What are you going to do, sit back and cry about it? No. We're going to play and hopefully, we'll be a better team coming out because of it. ... It's important to get any win that we can because of how close the race is in the West." With the win, San Antonio improved to 4-3 on its eight-game road trip as the rodeo occupies the AT&T Center. The Pistons, however, have tied a season high with five consecutive losses. "It was a defensive game tonight, but we'll take it. We needed that win," Spurs guard Tony Parker said. "This is good for our confidence. Now we want to finish (the trip) on a good note in Washington. Defensively, in the fourth quarter, we got the stops that we needed." Iverson carried Detroit back from a seven-point deficit, scoring 12 of his 31 points during the fourth quarter. He buried a pair of mid-range jumpers midway through the period, then drove to the hole and kicked out to Rasheed Wallace for a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to three. Shortly thereafter, the Pistons finally pulled ahead, as Iverson crossed Parker over for a short jumper, then exploded to the basket for a layup to give his team a 79-78 edge with 1:21 remaining. But that was the last bucket of the night for Detroit. "Allen was going pretty good tonight. I thought he was our most aggressive guy," Detroit coach Michael Curry said. "All night long he got to the paint. He's the reason we cut it to one." Tony Parker was fouled on a drive to the basket and put the Spurs on top for good with a pair of free throws. Iverson once again took command on the following possession, but his heroics finally ran out. He misfired from 13 feet and Bruce Bowen was subsequently fouled, burying both foul shots. "I've got to come up with that one. Couldn't get a better look. I kind of rushed it," Iverson said. "I had more time than I thought I had. And I kind of rushed it. Honestly, when you talk about plays like that, they matter so much, but just getting to that point to where we need a desperation make, that's the frustrating part. We just put ourselves in a bad predicament having to take a three with nine seconds left." Facing a three-point deficit, Iverson went for the tie moments later but misfired from the top of the key and Tim Duncan's 1-of-2 effort at the foul line sealed the game up. "Good teams realize it's a 48-minute game," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "Obviously, we started out slow, but I would have been surprised if we didn't hang in there. You don't know if you're going to win or lose, but nobody panicked. They just played the game." Detroit wasted one of the best efforts of the season from Iverson, who has yet to hit his stride in his new team's system. The Pistons have slipped to just one game over the .500 mark at 27-26. The All-Star guard established himself early, scoring eight points in the first quarter to open up an early lead. But the Spurs took command in the second frame, using a 13-2 run to open up a 42-38 advantage. "That's happened to us before," Parker said of the team's slow start. "Just keep playing. That's the key. You never know what might happen." Parker led the way for San Antonio's offense, finishing with 19 points and 11 assists. Duncan controlled the paint, collecting 18 points and 18 boards. It was another tough shooting effort for Wallace, who was just 4-of-17 from the floor, including a potential go-ahead attempt from 17 feet with 11 seconds left.

At the same time their incumbent all-star point guard was undergoing season-ending surgery on Thursday, the Orlando Magic were making a move to fill Jameer Nelson's sneakers, acquiring 10-year veteran Rafer Alston from the Houston Rockets.

Nelson underwent surgery in Birmingham, Ala., to repair his dislocated right shoulder and torn labrum sustained Feb. 2 against the Dallas Mavericks.

The club said the procedure, performed by Dr. James Andrews — the renowned surgeon to the sports stars — was successful and rehabilitation is estimated at four-to-six months. The end of Nelson's season was not a surprise.

Celtics F Garnett leaves game
Boston Celtics forward Kevin Garnett left Thursday's 90-85 loss to the Utah Jazz in the second quarter with a strained right knee and did not return. Garnett jumped to grab a rebound with 1:56 remaining in the first half. He appeared to injure the leg before going up, landing completely on his left leg and immediately making his way to the bench. The reigning Defensive Player of the Year avoided putting any weight on the injured leg as he was helped to the locker room.

The Celtics' emotional leader, Garnett took the floor for warmups before the second half, but returned to the locker room and was shut down as a precaution. "He wanted to run but we have a long season and I'm not taking risk by putting him on the floor," Boston coach Doc Rivers said. "We would have loved to have him, obviously, it probably would have made a difference tonight. Unless he's close to 100 percent, I'd rather have him healthy for the playoffs is how I look at it."

Garnett had eight points on 4-of-6 shooting and two rebounds in just under 15 minutes of action before departing and released a statement after the game. "As you know I suffered an injury, a strain to my right knee during the game tonight and I don't really have any comment about it," Garnett said. "I will have the knee re-examined tomorrow, and we should have more information at that time. Obviously, I would much rather be playing instead of providing a statement."

Suns' Amare Stoudemire out for 8 weeks after eye surgery
The Phoenix Suns announced that star forward Amare Stoudemire will be out about eight weeks after eye surgery. The surgery to repair a partially detached retina in Stoudemire’s right eye was performed this morning. Suns general manager Steve Kerr says the long-term prognosis is excellent and he should have 100% recovery of his vision.

Stoudemire is the Suns’ leading scorer for the third year in a row and is averaging 21.4 point and 8.1 rebounds per game this season. He started for the Western Conference in last weekend’s NBA All-Star game. The injury comes four days after the Suns, who are one game out of the eighth and final conference playoff spot, fired coach Terry Porter. “It is very disappointing to lose him at this time,” general manager Steve Kerr said in a statement. “We are all very excited about the progress the team is making, but Amare’s health and the health of all our players is our No. 1 concern.”

Right up to Thursday’s trade deadline, Soudemire was the subject of various trade rumors — including one involving the Pistons — but no deal was made.
