Moribund Pistons might be missing Chauncey's pride
When do you expect the Pistons to fall under .500?

Soon. Very, very soon. The Pistons are a game over .500 right now, and their next five games are on the road against Cleveland, Miami, New Orleans, Orlando and Boston in the span of eight days. All of those teams (unlike the Pistons) are well over .500 at home, headlined by the Cavs who have only lost once (to Kobe and the Lakers). The Pistons will be underdogs in all of those games. The way they’re playing lately, they should be underdogs to the Clippers, Michigan and the Shock. I can’t sit here and make the blanket statement that these players don’t care. But I sure get the sense that some don’t care us much as others. The one factor that I totally overlooked when the Pistons traded Chauncey Billups was the pride factor. Allen Iverson has pride. But does AI have pride in the Pistons? He didn’t build this. He didn’t win here. So to see it all unravel doesn’t faze him all that much. He has seen it before in his career in Denver and in Philly. I think if Chauncey were here, it would be personal. I just can’t envision him taking the losing quite as easily as some of these other guys do.

We’re not in the locker room, so we don’t know. But the answers to the questions are getting a little repetitive, and the body language just seems a little more resigned. I assumed that the Pistons would lose Thursday night just like I assume they’ll lose Sunday in Cleveland. I honestly can’t remember the last time I assumed the Pistons would lose a game. Michael Curry told the media the other day that Rodney Stuckey was the key to the whole thing. He wasn’t blaming Stuckey for the struggles, but he called on him to be more aggressive. So in the first game after that gauntlet was thrown down ... Stuckey took three shots and scored two points. Something is being lost -- badly -- in translation, or the message simply isn’t getting through. Either way, this is a Dead Team Walking. It’s embarrassing that we, as a fan base, bemoaned the 50-win Pistons teams as being boring. They were methodical. They won. And they went deep into the postseason. This team is equally boring. It’s not like they’re finding new and spectacular ways to lose. They’re just plodding along, losing the same way every single night. I’ll be surprised if they’re above .500 a week from now.

Oden (knee) to miss at least 2 more games
Trail Blazers center Greg Oden will sit out at least two more games because of a bone chip in his left knee.

Oden was hurt in a collision during a game at Golden State before the All-Star break. It forced him to miss the All-Star rookie challenge and Wednesday night's game against the Memphis Grizzlies. He will miss home games against the Atlanta Hawks on Friday night and against the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday. He will be evaluated for the team's three-game road trip next week.

http://www.freep.com/article/20090220/S ... +for+Wings?

With the Wings opening next season in Sweden, is there any other venue/locale you’d like to see them play? How about the Pistons, Tigers and Lions?

It’s great for the Swedish players on the roster that they get a home-and-home (although I think it's weird the NHL calls it such -- why not just say they’ll play two games over there? And yes, I know about the line changes.). But I couldn’t care less whether the Wings play in Sweden or Detroit. A sheet of ice is a sheet of ice. The only novel place I’d like to see the Wings play is another outdoor venue -- preferably one in Detroit. The outdoor game is great. Love it. It’s actually a shame that there isn’t more than one per year, and it’s a shame that now that the Wings have played in it once, they’ll probably be out of the mix for a while. But I’m the same clown who says that you can have too much of a good thing, so too many outdoor games would ruin the novelty of it. So I’ll shut up on that. You’re welcome.

As for the Pistons, Tigers and Lions, I’d pull for all of the venues that would never happen in a million years. I’d love to see the Lions play one exhibition game each year at Comerica Park or Michigan Stadium. I’d love to see the Pistons play a game or two at Cobo or the Joe. It would be fun to see an outdoor game as well, like the Suns played out in Palm Springs during the exhibition season. And I’d love to see the Lions play a game in January or February, but let’s not get silly.

Suns' Stoudemire out after eye surgery
Amar'e Stoudemire could be finished for the season just days after the Phoenix Suns decided not to trade him. Stoudemire, a starter for the West in Sunday's All-Star Game, underwent eye surgery Friday and won't be able to resume physical activity for about eight weeks, the Suns said in a news release. The NBA playoffs begin eight weeks from Saturday, and it's no sure thing the Suns will even be in the postseason, especially with their All-Star power forward unavailable for the final 29 games of the regular season.

Stoudemire was injured during his 42-point performance in Phoenix's 142-119 victory over the Clippers in Los Angeles on Wednesday night. "Obviously, it's very disappointing to lose him at this time," Suns general manager Steve Kerr said, "but Amar'e's health and the health of all our players are our No. 1 concern." Pravin Dugel, who performed the surgery to repair a partially detached retina in Stoudemire's right eye, said the eight-week recovery period is an average and the time varies case by case. Last week, the Suns entertained offers from other teams for Stoudemire but decided against the move after firing coach Terry Porter on Sunday and replacing him with Alvin Gentry. Gentry returned Phoenix to the high-speed game of Mike D'Antoni, a system that suits Stoudemire best.

Owner Robert Sarver also chose not to deal Shaquille O'Neal, like Stoudemire a high-priced player with a year left on his contract, in order to make a run at the postseason. The Suns entered Friday night's play a game behind Utah for the eighth and final playoff berth in the West.Kerr said Stoudemire's long-term prognosis is excellent, and he should have 100 percent recovery of his vision. Stoudemire, who started all 53 games this season, is the Suns' leading scorer for the third consecutive year, averaging 21.4 points and 8.1 rebounds per game.

Rough patches come with the territory of transition
Sometimes I have to remind myself that most Pistons fans haven’t been following this team for nearly as long as I have – more than three decades of calling games from the best seat in the house. And I have to remind myself that there are plenty of Pistons fans who haven’t seen anything close to a losing season or even the type of rough month or two the Pistons have had to endure this season. So a little perspective is in order as the Pistons take a five-game losing streak, on top of some trouble winning at The Palace all of a sudden, into a very, very tough five-game road trip that starts Sunday in Cleveland, where the Cavs have only lost one game all year. I think what you’re seeing is exactly what the troublesome side of transitioning a team from a contender with A-B-C parts to a contender with B-C-D-E parts can be. You’d like to think that adding a talent like Allen Iverson would allow a team to somehow get through this transitional period without having its record show that it’s in transition, but the bottom line is they are in transition and Allen hasn’t played with these guys for the last six years. They haven’t played with him for the last six years, either, and as brilliant as they are together on some nights – or at least for some stretches – it’s been a real growing process. I do think with almost 30 games still to play, despite this formidable road trip facing the Pistons, that they still have time to get in a groove, ensure a playoff spot and be the dangerous darkhorse that most of us thought they would be once the trade was made. When the trade was made and the salary-cap space was made available, you knew exactly what Joe D was thinking – stay in contention, long-range, stay out of the lottery and continue to give fans exciting basketball.

Even with Joe D’s brilliance, there are going to be some hiccups when you’re transitioning a team – and that’s all we’re seeing right now. The trade deadline just passed, and I know a lot of good, loyal Pistons fans were hoping that some really talented player or two would land in our laps. But I can’t tell you how happy I am that the Pistons didn’t make a deal. Joe D’s long-range plan was to free all kinds of cap space and to have more flexibility than anybody else in the league. He still has excellent players in Pistons uniforms right now. If you had to make a quick decision to deal somebody of significance as part of a deal that might even only have been good for help in the short term, it would have been double jeopardy – lose a good player or two and have the other half of the trade only help you in the short run. There are a lot of guys on this team who have played well for years for the Detroit Pistons and I think at the end of the year, with the ability to make more trades, but more importantly, the ability to sign free agents, Joe will have a better chance to consider all his options. When you watch the Pistons play this year and struggle to establish an identity with the guys who are still here, one thing that’s abundantly clear – this is not a bad basketball team. It’s not like they’re getting blown out. They’re making just enough mistakes or hitting just enough rough patches to lose close games. It almost becomes a psychological thing, even if you’re tough-minded veterans like we have. But, I guarantee you, a couple of wins could turn all of that around. This is the time of year when Pistons fans have become accustomed to looking at playoff seedings and wondering who they’re going to see at The Palace in another few months. They might be wondering what the lure is to watch this year’s team close out the season. I think there’s plenty reason to watch. One of the things I like about watching this team is, hey, I’m watching a first-ballot Hall of Famer, Allen Iverson – and he might not be here next year, but he is here this year and we get to watch him every night.

But more than that, I’m still watching the guys who brought this city a championship, and in Antonio McDyess’ case, a guy who helped them to Game 7 of the NBA Finals. When you’re looking out on that court and seeing Rasheed Wallace, Antonio McDyess, Rip Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince playing at The Palace, it’s all part of what’s been a sensational era of Pistons basketball. Hopefully, all of those guys will be part of the future, as well, as Joe makes some additions. I’m hoping for additions and not a lot of subtractions from the whole group. We have too many good players with high basketball IQs and great ability. Whether they’re closer to the end of their careers or still in the middle, they’re all guys who have unique abilities and big-play abilities and I love watching them play. I’ve been having this thought for the last month. If I am any team in the Eastern Conference, including Boston, Cleveland and Orlando, who is the team I absolutely do not want to play in round one? The Detroit Pistons. They have too much talent, too much toughness, too much savvy and absolutely nothing to lose. They’re certainly not going to shy away from the bright lights. They’ve already been there and done that. I think it will be fun for the Pistons, if they can fight themselves into a solid playoff position, to for once play with house money. The other teams have always been playing with house money, playing with no pressure. If the Pistons get there, they’ll be the team that’s the underdog. But with as many talented and tough-minded guys as the Pistons have, I think they’ll relish that opportunity to go in there and spoil somebody’s season. Or certainly make ’em squirm.

Hitting the road never looked so good
Home, sweet … eh, never mind. The way things have been going at The Palace lately, the Pistons – on the short end eight of their last nine home games – are perfectly content packing their duffel bags aboard Roundball Two and beating a path out of town. “I think a lot of teams think the other way around – when you’re struggling, go ahead and play at home and get some wins that way,” Tayshaun Prince said after Friday’s practice before the Pistons embark on a five-game road trip against teams that carry a cumulative 184-82 record (.692 winning percentage) and are an average of 20.4 games over .500. Not so, the Pistons. Why? “A lot of times, your concentration seems better on the road from the standpoint of you’re by yourself, against all odds,” Prince said. “It’s been like that since I’ve been here. I don’t know what to make of it, but things teams do things different. You would expect a team would take care of their home court and we haven’t done that, so it’ll be good for us to go on the road.” Two years ago, when the Pistons were the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference, they were not a dominant home team. In fact, they were better on the road (27-14) than at home (26-15). Last year, when Michael Curry joined Flip Saunders’ staff, they made a concerted effort to be better at home.

And they were. The Pistons were 34-7 at home last year in winning 59 games, 25-16 on the road. But so far this season, they’re 14-15 at home and 13-11 on the road, one of just four NBA teams in that situation. If they can come back from this trip still showing a better road record, then maybe they’ll have turned a corner. “I never say it’s a relief to go on the road,” Michael Curry said. “This group has a tendency not to play as well at home, for whatever reason. We made a big emphasis of that last year – to try to take care of our home court – and we haven’t done it this year. I think we’ll do well on this road trip and come back home and play better basketball at home.” Curry found glimmers of hope, even as the Pistons were losing their fifth straight game, in Thursday’s 83-79 loss to San Antonio for the way the Pistons defended and scrapped. Three key offensive performers – Prince, Rip Hamilton and Rasheed Wallace – shot a combined 24 percent, 9 of 37, and Rodney Stuckey’s malaise continued as he scored just two points on three shots. Curry found minor problems in some areas, but the biggest factor in the loss, he said, was simply missing pretty good shots. “There’s a whole vibe of how you’re playing and how you’re playing together, and when we have that vibe, we do really well,” Curry said. “I feel comfortable going on this trip that, with the way we’ve played of late … we’re close. I know most times when you don’t have a good record, everyone thinks they’re close. But we’re close to playing good basketball for a large portion of games. “We just have to get a little better at closing games out. It’s a little different for a lot of these guys. They may not have been asked to be closers, other than Allen (Iverson). But as long as we continue to fight, as we continue to do the things we need to do defensively and share the ball offensively, we’ll be fine.”

And if the Pistons needed any reminders that nothing is permanent in the NBA, it came to them over the last 24 hours in the wave of injury news. Jameer Nelson had shoulder surgery, definitively counting him out for the season for the 39-14 Orlando Magic. Amare Stoudemire had eye surgery that will sideline him for at least eight weeks, dimming the playoff hopes of the resurgent 30-23 Phoenix Suns. And Kevin Garnett flew back to Boston from Utah for an MRI on the knee he hurt in Thursday’s loss, causing him to miss a minimum of three games and potentially many more depending on test results. “Anything can happen – those are great reminders,” Curry said. “Unfortunately, you hate to see guys get hurt. Even teams you’re competing against, I hate to see guys get hurt. That’s not what it’s about, but unfortunately guys do get hurt. But anything can happen. It’s just a matter of playing really good basketball. “I don’t think any teams are just too dominant that if we got in a seven-game series against them that we don’t feel we would have a chance. But we’ve still got to play good basketball to get to that point and it starts on this road trip.” For this generation of Pistons, it wouldn’t be the first time.

Deal or no deal?
“No deal!” screamed Pistons president Joe Dumars at the NBA trade deadline Thursday. Actually, he probably quietly mouthed the words to no one in particular. Michael Rosenberg took his turn grabbing a hammer and putting a nail in the Pistons’ 2008-09 coffin after the watched the team stand by the side of the trade road and then get taken apart, 83-79, by the Spurs’ Summer League team. “The Pistons didn't make a move, but most teams in the NBA didn't make a move,” Rosenberg wrote. “No, the interesting thing here is that the Pistons did not even try to make a move.”

Rosenberg then judged the Pistons on the court to be old. Really old. “The Pistons have talked about bringing more consistent effort and being closer than they appear, and maybe they believe that,” he wrote. “But this is an aging team. Their window has closed, and they're standing outside, trying not to freeze to death.” Not a pretty picture. And it might not get prettier anytime soon. Dumars is stockpiling salary cap room to build a better future with knowledge that mega stars like LeBron James and Chris Bosh are due to hit the market in summer 2010.

Of course, Joe D. joked that he would have to loosen to purse strings because of that pesky little matter of having to play those 82 games in 2009-10. "Given the fact that we have to play a season next year, I think I need to use that money," Dumars said. "I think we're going to tip it off next year. So I better try to put a hell of a team on the floor next year." Dumars can’t tell fans: “Hey, fans. I’m hording money for two years, so let’s all just be patient, OK?” But the Offbeat can. Listen, people, the Pistons may miss the playoffs this year and struggle next year, too. But at least they have a plan to build a better future. And won’t it all have been worth it when LeBron puts on that Pistons jersey in about 18 months?

Stoudemire has surgery to repair retina
The Suns have announced that Amare Stoudemire was forced to undergo surgery Friday to repair a partially detached retina in his right eye suffered in a Wednesday night rout of the Los Angeles Clippers. It is Stoudemire's second injury in that eye since October and threatens to sideline the All-Star forward for the rest of the regular season.

Stoudemire's return to physical activity has been estimated at eight weeks by the Suns after Friday morning's procedure, although the club said in a statement that "recovery varies on a case-by-case basis."

In a club statement Friday, Suns president of basketball operations Steve Kerr said: "We are very glad to hear that Amare should have a 100-percent recovery relative to his vision and his long-term prognosis is excellent. Obviously, it is very disappointing to lose him at this time. We are all very excited about the progress the team is making, but Amare's health and the health of all our players is our No. 1 concern."

Joe Dumars had his mind made up that he wants to go into the Summer with as much cap space as possible. Whether it was his interview with Keith Langlois or his comments leading up to and after the NBA's trading deadline, it's clear that Joe had a plan in his mind and was sticking to it.

[T]he Pistons were reluctant to do anything that would hinder that flexibility. "When you lay down parameters like that -- that alone will probably knock down some of the phone calls you are going to get," Dumars said before Thursday night's game against the Spurs at the Palace. "There was nothing even remotely close that even tempted me. "As you guys know, teams are just trying to get off of money with the tough financial situation." He joked that it really wouldn't be wise to wait until then because there is still the matter of the 2009-10 season. "Given the fact that we have to play a season next year, I think I need to use that money," Dumars said. "I think we're going to tip it off next year. So I better try to put a hell of a team on the floor next year."

Most Piston fans will be pleased to know that Joe isn't going to wait until the summer of 2010 to use the cap space that he has accrued. Taking a look at the possible free agents this coming summer, there are players that may be available for Dumars that could be enticing.

The list is larger, but those are the better of the choices that will, or may, become free agents. The Pistons could have between 18 and 23 million dollars in cap space, depending on what the salary cap is set at. The league put out a memo that predicted that it might go down to 57.3 million dollars from this seasons 58.68 million. That may happen, but if the cap does sink to just over 57 million, the Pistons still would have around 20 million in cap space to spend.

That's 38.2 million in committed salaries for the Pistons next season. That can be altered slighting if Joe decides not to bring Bynum back for another season, but would be offset by the amount put on by the Pistons first-round pick. So it would seem that Joe will have at least 20 million dollars to work with.

Adding to the roster may involve signing a free agent, or it has been suggested that Dumars may be able to grab a big name player via trade, from a team looking to clear salaries.

Full list of NBA free agent list and also both restricted and players with player options in the link above^.

[C]ome this summer, [the Pistons will] be very much in the mix. Remember last summer when the Denver Nuggets were looking to dump salary and they traded Marcus Camby to the Clippers for second-round draft picks?

"When you have the cap space that we are going to have (as much as $23 million), you know you are going to be presented with every option out there," Dumars said.

"We aren't banking on that, but I would be disingenuous if I stood here and said that's not something that could happen down the road."

John Hollinger suggested that Washington may look to unload Caron Butler in the summer and that Dumars could take on his salary with giving back only a draft pick, while still having cap space available to sign another free agent. A move like that would also allow Dumars to make a trade involving Tayshaun Prince, perhaps to land a big man in the middle that Detroit has lacked the past few seasons.

The salary cap sinking to 50 million, a 15% drop in one season? Then dropping another 5 million the next season? Brett calls this a "conservative estimate", while it's obviously a Dooms Day scenario that will never happen. As I've outlined in commenting on the league memo suggesting the cap may decrease to just over 57 million dollars, the current season is the first of a huge extension the NBA signed for their broadcast rights.

The chance that the cap drops to 50 million next season is the same chance George W. Bush enters the Detroit Mayoral race, and wins.

Slam magazine writer Brett Ballantini writes a piece titled "Apocalypse: 2010", in which he describes a scenario that he believes could happen. It's hard to tell where he gets his information from, but the scenario seems far-fetched, to say the least.

The world economy is darkening. The U.S. Government has just passed a Ponzi scheme purporting to bail out our banking system so massive it makes the empty promise of cap space clearing in the NBA seem like a modest Madoff Plan. The salary cap has grown 815 percent in the past two decades, from $7.2 million in '88-89 to $58,680,000 this season. Since the turn of the century alone it has nearly doubled. Franchises that once could well have been built atop some land in the juicy-rich oil country of Monahans or Odessa, just waiting for it to barf Benjamins with the light tap of a derrick, are now dry wells destined to drain some owners dry. We're starting to see some scary signs of the real world creeping into the NBA, and not just in the form of "clearing cap space." Seats near and far from the sidelines sit empty--a small-market club like the Bucks feel lucky to avoid hearing echoes dribbling in a half-full Bradley Center these days. And now news has leaked of a league "emergency fund" of borrowed monies, intended to help keep the weakest NBA teams afloat.

The salary cap is going down--perhaps as fast as it shot up. A conservative estimate might peg the '09-10 salary cap at $50 million, a drop of 15 percent. If all things economic aren't righted by miracle cure, it's reasonable to think the recovery might not be underway by 2011, so expect the cap to take another plunge from there. When the dust settles on the storied Class of 2010, teams could be squeezing players into a salary cap that's rolled back to $45 million or less.

The exception was a move moments before the 3 p.m. EST deadline in which backup point guard Will Solomon went to the Sacramento Kings and Patrick O'Bryant was acquired from the Boston Celtics in a three-team deal, according to Raptors sources. The Kings will send a conditional second-round pick to Boston.

O'Bryant, a seven-foot centre out of Bradley University, was the ninth overall pick by the Golden State Warriors in the 2006 NBA draft. He played sparingly for two seasons with them before signing a two-year free-agent contract this past summer with Boston for the league minimum. He's appeared in just 26 games this year, playing an average of 4.2 minutes a game behind a deep Boston front line.

The move gives the Raptors a chance to take a look at a young big man with little risk. The 22-year-old O'Bryant has one season remaining on his contract at about $850,000 (U.S.), but only $500,000 is guaranteed.

What they saw were a number of teams manoeuvring to create room to take a run at free agents in the summer of 2010, a class that will feature Raptors all-star forward Chris Bosh prominently. Alternatively, other teams shuffled their lineups in cash-neutral deals.

A report this week that Chicago was Bosh's most-favoured destination when he becomes a free agent was denied with a simple one-word answer from a source close to the Raptors' franchise player yesterday: "No."

Bosh himself laughed it off. He's heard it before. As the hype around the 2010 free-agent period builds Bosh has now been linked to New York, Cleveland, Miami, Detroit and Chicago, though none of the reports have been verified.

Toronto Raptors forward Chris Bosh pronounced himself fit to play after a vigorous practice at the Air Canada Centre yesterday. Bosh has missed five games with soreness and swelling in his right knee. "I feel real good," he said. "As close as I've felt to 100 per cent in a long time."

Pacers G Dunleavy out indefinitely with sore knee
The Indiana Pacers say guard Mike Dunleavy will be out indefinitely with a sore right knee.

The team says it told Dunleavy on Friday to get other medical options, after which a treatment decision will be made. Dunleavy missed the first 34 games of the season because of problems with the knee. He then averaged 15.1 points as he played 18 games but has missed four games since Feb. 8.

The Pacers also are without All-Star forward Danny Granger, who might miss up to three weeks with a partial tendon tear in the sole of his right foot. The Pacers play Friday night at Minnesota.
