All kinds of voting (MVP, ROY, DPOY), head to head match ups, advanced statistics such has defensive rating, offensive rating, win shares, steals percentage, rebounding rate, pace, basically good stuff which indicates a lot of the statistics that will show the true value of the player on both sides.

basketball-reference is the best site on the planet. Has literally every stat of every player.

apbr.org is also nice, they're getting stats from the pre-60's era in case anyone's interested, lol. Not too mention, they have a section in the forums of older players career high, which is somewhat harder to find (ex. Moncrief's career high being 44, and IIRC Heinsohn's being 55, etc).

That's a site that not a lot of people know about, it's where true statisticians have their sites listed. Actually the owner of bball reference posts on there, also they have this awesome statistical database.

Now, read carefully. What I am NOT saying, and really just about nobody is saying, is that new statistics are anywhere close to good enough to replace being a knowledgeable observer of basketball, and watching yourself.

What new statistics are plenty good enough to do, however, is to replace the old statistics. Points and rebounds have always been measured ... why? Because they are the most important things in basketball? No. They have always been measured because ... they are easy to measure.

I think basketball analysis in 2009 is like medicine in 1900. It's new, and some of it is crackpot. Yes, there is probably more dogma then their ought to be from the true believers, but also too much skepticism from the old guard. Even more than a century later, you can make a case that some modern medicine is harmful.

I don't much trust doctors by default either. The difference, I suppose, is to have a willingness to let them make their case about why what they recommend is needed and how they know it.

What drives this? Who knows? Maybe everyone arrives in the league expecting to make highlight reel offensive moves, while older player realize they want to win, and focus on boring things like D. Maybe players who don't defend well don't last very long in the NBA, so there's improvement with age by natural selection, if you will. Maybe some elements of defense are secrets that take years to learn. Maybe veterans make so much money that it's worth doing just about anything to impress coaches, be irreplaceable, and extend their careers.

I agree most with his natural selection and pacing points, but have no doubt that the others are involved

Great analysis.

The real question begins with the 18% correlation. Is that considered too low or acceptable? This could be answered if we can speculate what the other 82% accounts for. Most people will agree that player skills and coaching (both are almost impossible to measure) are the most significant, but it would be interesting to know how age compares to those factors.
