Pistons blitzed by Cavaliers, fall to .500 overall
And the award for best impression of an NBA playoff team goes to ... the Detroit Pistons. There's no such award, which is too bad for the Pistons. Because that might have been the only hardware this group sees for a while. The Cleveland Cavaliers delivered the kind of emphatic beating that a legitimate title contender administers to a lesser foe, as they crushed the Pistons, 99-78. Cleveland's Delonte West, who missed 16 games with a right wrist injury, made up for lost time with a game-high 25 points, which included five 3-pointers. Sunday's nationally televised matchup was over before it really started. The Cavs did anything and everything they wanted, with little to no resistance from the Pistons. This was not how Pistons coach Michael Curry or his players anticipated they would begin the first of the team's five consecutive road games against some of the NBA's top teams.

Cleveland opened with a 19-8 run, led by 16 points after the first quarter and nearly doubled Detroit's scoring output with a 67-34 halftime lead. Curry has seen his share of disappointing performances by the Pistons, but Sunday's loss has to rank among the team's worst this season. "We were out on the court playing like we don't like each other, or we're strangers," said Curry, whose comments were similar to those made from time to time by former Pistons coach Larry Brown, who now coaches Charlotte. "That was disappointing." With the loss, Detroit (27-27) has dropped a season-high six straight, while the Cavs (43-11) improved on their NBA-best record at home, which now stands at 25-1. LeBron James delivered a series of scintillating layups and dunks before finishing with 20 points nine assists and five rebounds in just under 31 minutes. But by no means was Sunday's massacre a one-man operation. Delonte West. Mo Williams. Zydrunas Illgauskas. Moondog the mascot. Everyone clad in a Cavaliers uniform on Sunday night seemed to have their way on the court while the Pistons appeared dazed and stunned. "We just weren't good," said Pistons guard Allen Iverson, whose 14 points led all Detroit scorers. "We stunk the gym up."

Cleveland beating Detroit wasn't a surprise. But to do so in such emphatic fashion was something few could have envisioned, especially considering how well Detroit usually plays on the road. Curry as well as his players continue to search for answers to how a team that just a few weeks ago was 10 games over .500, now finds itself one loss away from having a losing record this late in the season for the first time since 2001 when the Pistons finished 32-50. "I know one thing," Iverson said. "We have to play harder, than the teams that we're playing against. That's for sure. Teams just play harder than us." Detroit's lack of consistent effort has been an issue all season, with no remedy seemingly in sight.Losing has a way of becoming contagious. And soon after that, it becomes an accepted habit. Pistons players shrug off the notion that they have come to accept defeat with open arms, even if their play repeatedly says to the contrary. "You never give in. You never give in," Pistons guard Richard Hamilton said. "I don't think anybody on this team is ever going to do that. For the simple fact, we know what it means to win and we know how to win and nobody likes to lose. Nobody should be out here being comfortable with losing."

Detroit G Rodney Stuckey, who totaled five points in the previous two games, scored 10. ... Pistons F Jason Maxiell was given a technical foul in the second quarter. ... The Cavaliers committed three turnovers through the first three quarters and finished with six for the game, tying a season low . ... Sunday night marked Brown's 300th games as Cavaliers coach. ... Cavaliers radio play-by-play announcer Joe Tait missed the game because of kidney stones.

Rock bottom?: Pistons lose 6th straight; now at .500
The Pistons are much like the economy these days. Where exactly is the low point? How bad can it get? With the economy, no one really knows where's bottom. But with the Pistons, it'll be difficult to get much lower than Sunday's 99-78 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. They never were in the game. "We stunk the gym out," Allen Iverson said. "We usually play together on the road, but we just acted like strangers out there. We didn't get it done." The loss extended the Pistons losing streak to a season-high six games. They also officially became a .500 team, at 27-27. It has gotten bad, no question about it. "I didn't anticipate starting a trip like that, it's disappointing," coach Michael Curry said. "We talked about having trust on the court (and ended up) playing like we didn't like each other or we're strangers. "It's disappointing."

Curry also wasn't pleased with the effort. "Was the effort satisfactory? No," Curry said. Iverson has noticed the Pistons slacking off a work ethic that used to be the standard for the rest of the league. "I know one thing, we have to play harder than the teams we've been playing against, that's for sure," Iverson said. "Teams are playing harder than us. "Usually this team, of all the teams I played against in my career, this team played the hardest. That's the surprising thing for me. Teams are outplaying us. When it comes to playing hard, that's something you can always do." Since a high-water mark of 21-11, after defeating the Los Angeles Clippers on Jan. 4, the Pistons have gone 6-16. And the scary part is, considering this was only the start of a brutal five-game road trip, it could get much worse. "How much more open do the eyes have to be?" Curry said. "You have to learn from games like this. "It's disappointing we haven't learned from this and we haven't gotten better from this. You have to go out there and get it done."

Iverson led the Pistons with 14 points (6-for-16 shooting), Walter Herrmann scored 13, and Richard Hamilton and Jason Maxiell 11 off the bench. The Pistons shot 37 percent (32-of-86) from the field. Delonte West, returning to the Cleveland lineup after missing more than a month with a wrist injury, led the Cavaliers (43-11) with 25 points. LeBron James had 20 points and nine assists, and Zydrunas Ilgauskas 16 points and eight rebounds. "They made a run early and we didn't get out of the gates for whatever reason," Hamilton said. "When they had a 10-point lead they took it 20 and when they had it at 20, they took it to 30."

Delonte West helps Cavaliers dominate Pistons, 99-78
West, sidelined since Jan. 15 because of a fractured wrist, scores 25 points as Cleveland drops Delonte West scored 25 points in his first game since mid-January and LeBron James added 20, leading the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 99-78 win Sunday over the Detroit Pistons.

West, sidelined since Jan. 15 because of a fractured right wrist, made eight of 11 shots, including all five of his three-point attempts. He scored 13 points in the first quarter when the Cavaliers put the game away against the sluggish Pistons, who have lost six straight for the first time since February 2004 and fell to 27-27. Cleveland led, 31-17, after the first 12 minutes.

James, who scored 55 points Friday night against Milwaukee, played only 31 minutes, added nine assists and five rebounds. Allen Iverson led the Pistons with 14 points.

Pistons face more adversity with sixth straight loss
Fight to win. It is an approach that Detroit Pistons coach Michael Curry has lived by throughout his playing career, a message he has tried to get through to his players repeatedly. It is not working. Sunday's 99-78 loss to Cleveland was another game in which the gap between Curry's expectations and his player's execution, was enormous. Detroit's losing streak extended to a season-high six in a row, with no signs of letting up anytime soon.

Curry knows how he would handle this situation if he were a player. But getting his players to follow suit, that is another story. "I've been through harder things," Curry said. "Look at me as a player and how I got to this point. Fighting, that's the easiest part for me. Things never came easy for me, so this is easy. But, trying to relay that to guys, that's the tougher part, trying to get them to understand that when you're in situations like this, all you do is fight."

Part of the problem stems from this group of players never having to deal with any real hardships in the regular season, with most of their struggles in recent years coming in the playoffs. "This is a tough time," Curry said. "The first time they're experiencing tough times in the regular season. But whenever you get to that point, and it gets really, really tough, you've got to work that much harder and trust each other that much more." It sounds like a good message, but it remains to be seen if it will sink in with the Pistons.

West steps up
Delonte West was having his best season in the NBA prior to a right wrist injury that sidelined him for 16 games. He returned to action on Sunday, and he did not seem to miss a beat in helping lead Cleveland to a win against Detroit. LeBron James had 20 points and nine assists, but it was West's early shot-making that gave Detroit's defense major problems.

West, who made all five of his 3-point attempts, scored 13 of his game-high 25 points in the first quarter. "Delonte is a very good basketball player on both ends of the floor," Cavaliers coach Mike Brown said. "When we're able to get him the ball, good things happen, and we were able to get him the ball."

One of the keys to West's shooting success was James, whose presence forced Detroit to tilt in his direction often. That led to some Pistons players being out of position defensively, which opened up scoring opportunities for West. "That's how he kind of got going," Curry said. "He's a good player and he's going to make plays."

Oral surgery for Hamilton
Richard Hamilton does not have any new injuries, but the veteran guard was in quite a bit of pain recently. Hamilton had root canal surgery shortly before the Pistons arrived in Cleveland.

Ilgauskas adds to Cavaliers' arsenal
LeBron James and Delonte West carried the night in the Cavaliers' 99-78 victory over the Pistons on Sunday, but Cavs center Zydrunas Ilgauskas was his normal steady self. He had a quiet 16-point, eight-rebound night, and his contributions in the second quarter helped turn the game into a blowout. The 7-foot-3, 11-year veteran can hurt opponents with his post-up game and his ability to use his long arms to tap offensive rebounds into the hoop. But it's his shooting ability that makes for a tough night for teams worried about superstar LeBron James and the outside stroke of guard Mo Williams, who played in his first All-Star Game last weekend. "He's their X-factor,"

Pistons forward Antonio McDyess said of Ilgauskas before Sunday's game. "Everyone seems to forget about the numbers he put up and talk about LeBron; you talk about Mo Williams, you kind of have him on the backburner, but he (Ilgauskas) causes more people problems than normal."Ilgauskas is one of James' favorite playmates on the pick-and-roll because he is a threat rolling to basket -- just like more conventional centers. But if you play it conventionally, Ilgauskas can pop out to the perimeter and make jumpers.

Ilgauskas also has extended his range to three-point land this season. After going 0-for-1 Sunday, he is 12-for-28 (42.9%). His career high for three-pointers in a pervious season was two."The thing that gives most people problems is his shooting ability on the outside," McDyess said. "So it's kind of hard to guard that pick-and-roll between him and LeBron."

RIGHT CALL: Despite some reluctance to return to the starting lineup after the All-Star break, McDyess has excelled. The team has lost all three of its games since the break, but McDyess has had two strong outings.

McDyess, 34, said he would normally run around on dead legs 50 games into the season, but the month off when he was a part of the Chauncey Billups-Allen Iverson trade earlier this season may have helped him. Denver had no intention of keeping McDyess, but the forward had to wait 30 days before rejoining the Pistons because of league rules. "Normally this time of season my legs are heavy and I would be getting a little more fatigued than normal," McDyess said. "I guess that month probably helped me. "I've been feeling pretty good. I get tired, but my legs are not as heavy."

In Sunday's loss he had four points and five rebounds in only 26 minutes.

MORE ZONE? There isn't anything good you can take out of Sunday night's game, but Pistons coach Michael Curry might want to consider playing more zone defense.

The Cavs pretty much had their way on the offensive end, but they were slowed some when the Pistons went to the zone.

Curry doesn't like it, but the team can hide its defensive shortcomings for short periods of time.

Pistons drop 6th straight, fall to .500
On Jan. 2, when the Pistons were 21-11, to suggest they might miss the playoffs would have someone asking about your mental health. But after Sunday night's 99-78 blowout loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Pistons' fall to .500 was complete, and if you made the suggestion about the playoffs now, people would think you were perfectly sane. The Cavs (43-11) jumped all over the Pistons from the opening tip, taking a 67-34 halftime lead. The Pistons (27-27) dropped their sixth straight for a grim start to their five-game, eight-day trip. The blowout has Pistons coach Michael Curry wondering about the players' commitment to one another. "I just talked about having trust out on the court, defensively and offensively," Curry said after a prolonged closed locker room afterward. "We were playing out on the court like either we don't like each other or we're strangers."

Curry was referring to the Cavs' quick 29-13 lead. The Cavs got open jumpers and the Pistons appeared a step slow. LeBron James, the NBA's scoring leader, finished with 20 points, five rebounds and nine assists.Delonte West, back from a stint on the injured list with a fractured right wrist, led the Cavs with 25 points as they won their fourth straight. Allen Iverson led the Pistons with 14 points. The Pistons are tied for seventh in the Eastern Conference playoff chase with the Philadelphia 76ers, but are only three games ahead of the Chicago Bulls, who are ninth. Eight teams make it to the playoffs from each conference.

After the game, Rip Hamilton, who scored 11 points in 27 minutes, talked openly about the lack of stability this season. "There's been a whole lot of changes this year," Hamilton said. "We've been changing stuff all through the season. "For one example, we just put McDyess back in the starting lineup and things like that. There's been a lot of different changes. Me coming off the bench, so ... there's something different." Curry said there isn't time for the Pistons to feel sorry for themselves. He talked about his own playing career in which he was a journeyman known for his toughness. "I've been through harder things," Curry said. "If you look at me at how I was as a player and how I got to this point ... fighting, that's the easiest part for me. "Things have never come easy for me so this is easy for me. But trying to relay that to the guys, that's the tougher part. When you get in situations like this, all you do is fight."

Sixth sense
Sunday was the Pistons' sixth loss in a row; it's the first time since the 2003-04 season they've had a losing streak that long, and the sixth time in 10 seasons they've lost at least that many:

SEASON L SPAN W-L
2008-09 6 Feb. 8-22 27-27
2003-04 6 Feb. 3-17 54-28
2002-03 7 Feb. 21-March 2 50-32
2001-02 7 Dec. 16-28 50-32

West 25 in return, Cavs beat Pistons 99-78
The AP reports: It’s not often someone other than LeBron James gets top billing in a victory by the Cleveland Cavaliers. Delonte West provided a rare exception Sunday night. West scored 25 points in his first game since mid-January and led the Cavaliers to a 99-78 win over the Detroit Pistons on Sunday night. West, sidelined since Jan. 15 with a fractured right wrist, was 8-of-11 from the field and made all five of his 3-point attempts… “Was Delonte injured?” joked James, who had 20 points in 31 minutes after scoring 55 Friday night against Milwaukee… Zydrunas Ilgauskas added 16 for Cleveland, while Wally Szczerbiak scored 15. Walter Herrmann scored 13 for Detroit.

Moore's agent, Mark Bartelstein, confirmed the team has offered the center a contract, and said several other teams have done the same thing, although he wouldn't divulge their names.

Moore is expected to make his decision today after clearing waivers and becoming an unrestricted free agent. "A lot of teams are very excited about him, so it's a tough decision for Mikki," said Bartelstein.

TAKE FIVE : A five-point dissection of an ominous road trip start 1. Cavs’ lead runneth over – The Pistons hit the road Sunday – and were promptly run over. The Cavs went on 20-5 run in the first quarter and scored another 12 unanswered in the second to amass a 24-point lead just 15 minutes into the game. Rasheed Wallace picked up two personal fouls in the first six minutes, and it was downhill from there. Looking disrupted and lacking direction, Detroit’s deficit exceeded 30 points. They were nearly doubled up at halftime, 67-34. “I didn’t anticipate starting the trip off like that. Disappointed,” said Pistons coach Michael Curry, referring to the five-game road trip that is just underway. “We just talked about having trust out on the court, helping each other out on the court, defensively, offensively. We were out on the court playing like either we don’t like each other, or are we strangers? That was disappointing.” The Cavs didn’t even need a superlative effort from LeBron James, who scored a season-high 55 Friday at Milwaukee. James registered 20 points on 6-of-13 shooting and 8-of-10 at the foul line. Far more damaging were his game-high nine assists to teammates like Delonte West, who scored a game-high 25, and Wally Szczerbiak, who added 15 off the bench. Allen Iverson had 14 to lead the Pistons. Walter Herrman added 13 points – his first double-digit effort since November – while Rip Hamilton and Jason Maxiell each had 11 off the bench. The Pistons shot 37.2 percent from the field. “We just weren’t good. We stunk the gym up,” Iverson said. “We usually play together on the road, and we just acted like strangers out there tonight. We didn’t get it done.”

TEAM COLORS 2. White Hot – Scoring 25 points in your first game in two months is a nice story. But Cavs starting guard Delonte West took it to another level, notching 20 points by halftime. “Delonte was injured?” joked James. “He played like he was never out. He didn’t miss a beat. That just shows the chemistry of our team: how a guy can just automatically implement himself into the lineup after being out for awhile.” West, who missed 16 games with a wrist fracture suffered Jan. 2, sparked the Cavs with three 3-pointers in the opening six minutes. His layup at the end of the first quarter gave him 13 points. The Pistons had 17 points as a team. “I just happened to be the open man,” West said. “We really exploited the defensive zone they were trying to play and we just moved the ball well.” West scored 20 points on just six field goals in the first half. He was 4-for-4 on 3-pointers and 4-for-4 at the foul line, outperforming Detroit in both areas. The Pistons were 1-for-4 behind the line and 3-for-4 on free throws. 3. BLUE COLLAR – For the second straight game, Jason Maxiell just missed a double-double, scoring 11 points to go with a team-high nine rebounds, three coming on the offensive glass. Maxiell has 20 points and 18 rebounds over the last two games. He totaled 13 points and eight rebounds in the seven February games prior. Maxiell, a 52.5-percent free-throw shooter, was 5-for-7 at the foul line Sunday. The rest of the Pistons accounted for just 4-of-6.

4. RED FLAG – The Cavs scored 12 points on the Pistons’ first six turnovers, and with top-flight finishers like James and Mo Williams, most them came quickly. The Cavs had 15 points on the fast break before the Pistons registered in the category. Rodney Stuckey committed the first two turnovers in a 68-second span, leading to five points. Williams got the first steal and assisted on a James dunk. Then James stepped in front of a pass and drew a Stuckey foul after the layup. The sequence capped 15 unanswered points, turning the Pistons’ 9-8 deficit into 24-8. It was off to the races. THE LAST CALL : A little perspective on the end of divisional dominance 5. Goal: Contain Cleveland – The Pistons own nine modern-day Central Division titles, including six of the last seven. They have two more than any other franchise, with Milwaukee’s seven next in line. But it’s clear that the Cavaliers, now holding a 16-game lead on second-place Detroit with 28 to play, will claim the 2009 Central crown, their first since 1976. When the Bad Boys gave Detroit its first three-year divisional reign, Michael Jordan and the Bulls finished runner-up twice. It took arguably the game’s greatest player seven years to win his first Central Division title in 1991. The Bulls’ breakthrough against the Pistons was absolute and sustained; Chicago won six of the next eight Central (and NBA) titles with Jordan in the lineup. Now in his sixth NBA season, LeBron James is on the brink of a similar breakthrough. And as Sunday night illustrated, it will be as swift and certain as Jordan’s was two decades earlier. The challenge facing the Pistons is to make sure 2009 is the Cavs’ year – not the beginning of the Cavs’ era, the way the 1990s were for the Bulls. Joe Dumars – who knows better than anyone how the decline of the Bad Boys prevented the Pistons from challenging Jordan again – certainly doesn’t like to see the Pistons relegated to the rest of the pack. But it may be the price paid to ensure King James’ Central reign is one and done.
