Hughes And Wilcox Struggled In Knicks Debut
The troubling thing about getting new players at the trade deadline is that most of the time, they don't come broken in. The Knicks unveiled yet another new lineup yesterday with the additions of Larry Hughes and Chris Wilcox, and the result was a 111-100 loss to the Raptors in a noon matinee at Air Canada Centre.

The new wrinkle left Mike D'Antoni with plenty to iron out, as Hughes struggled with his shot (1-for-9) and Wilcox looked lost in the offense. D'Antoni also spent the game tinkering with the rotation, which is never a good thing when a team is battling for position in a playoff race.

"We're going to need some time to work them in," Chris Duhon said. "The bad thing about it is we don't have time."

Pistons Facing Test With Losing Streak At 6
The Pistons are much like the economy these days. Where exactly is the low point? How bad can it get? With the economy, no one really knows where's bottom. But with the Pistons, it'll be difficult to get much lower than Sunday's 99-78 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

They never were in the game. "We stunk the gym out," Allen Iverson said. "We usually play together on the road, but we just acted like strangers out there. We didn't get it done."

The loss extended the Pistons losing streak to a season-high six games. They also officially became a .500 team, at 27-27. It has gotten bad, no question about it. "I didn't anticipate starting a trip like that, it's disappointing," coach Michael Curry said. "We talked about having trust on the court (and ended up) playing like we didn't like each other or we're strangers. "It's disappointing."

the Heat has tough matchups this week against Detroit (Tuesday) and at Atlanta (Friday), both of which are jockeying for position with the Heat in the Eastern Conference playoff picture. The Heat is the fifth seed right now while Atlanta is fourth and Detroit is sixth.

"This game is behind us," forward Udonis Haslem said. "Now our focus goes to Detroit."

Detroit (27-26) at Cleveland (42-11), 8:00 p.m. EST CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- LeBron James is coming off of one the best games of his career. The Detroit Pistons know all too well that he is capable of pulling another one off against them. James and the Cleveland Cavaliers host the struggling Pistons on Sunday. The "King" scored a season-high 55 points, making a career-best eight 3-pointers in Cleveland's 111-103 victory at Milwaukee on Friday. James scored 24 of his points in the third quarter en route to the seventh 50-point game of his career. After the contest James said his performance fell short of a memorable playoff win over Detroit in Game Five of the 2007 Eastern Conference finals. James scored his team's final 25 points in a 109-107 overtime victory. The Pistons are hoping he can't duplicate the performance as they come in desperate for a victory. Detroit has matched a season high with five straight losses, which includes Thursday's 93-89 setback to San Antonio. Allen Iverson scored 31 points in the loss for the Pistons, who are opening a five-game road trip in Cleveland.

CLEVELAND 99, DETROIT 78 CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- The Detroit Pistons have ruled the Central Division for the last six years. Times are changing. Delonte West returned from a 16-game absence to pour in 25 points and lead the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 99-78 victory over the Pistons on Sunday. LeBron James added 20 points and nine assists and Wally Szczerbiak scored 15 points off the bench for the Cavaliers, who have won four straight. Detroit has dropped six in a row, 15 of its last 20 and is not only in danger of losing its grip on the Central Division but of falling out of the playoff picture all together. The Pistons put up absolutely no fight right from the start on Sunday as Cleveland took a 31-17 lead after the first quarter and extended it to 67-34 at the break as West went for 20 points on 6-of-8 shooting in the first 24 minutes. "We were out on the court playing like either we don't like each other, or are we strangers? That was disappointing," Detroit coach Michael Curry said. West finished the game 10-of-14 from the field, including 5-of-5 from beyond the arc, showing no ill effects from the wrist injury that has kept him out for over a month. "Was he injured? He played like he was never out," James said of West. "He didn't miss a beat. That just shows the chemistry of our team. He adds another guy that can attack a defense and guard some of the best perimeter guys on the opposing team." "I stayed ready," West said. "My arm was bothering me a little bit from all the high fives I was getting. When the crowd gets behind you, you can feel the energy in the building and you feel like you can't miss. When the adrenaline gets going, the blood is flowing through your body, it's hard to feel an injury. It's starting to stiffen up now, but I'll be right back in (Monday) and get my treatments." The Cavaliers shot 56 percent (22-of-39) in the dominating first half. "The spacing was unbelievable," Cleveland coach Mike Brown said. "The ball movement and decision-making was unbelievable also." Detroit finished the night 32-of-86 (37 percent) from the field and had just two starters reach double figures, led by Allen Iverson's 14. "We stunk the gym up," Iverson said. "We usually play together on the road, and we just acted like strangers out there tonight. We didn't get it done." Zydrunas Ilgauskas added 16 points and Mo Williams scored 11 as most of Cleveland's starters took the fourth quarter off. "We had a lot of energy and played great basketball from start to finish," James said.

The Pistons' 50th game since Allen Iverson debuted for the team was arguably their worst during that time -- a 99-78 loss at Cleveland in which Detroit trailed 67-34 at the half. That equaled the second-largest halftime deficit in franchise history. The record, 38 points, was set in 1978 during Dick Vitale's only full season as Pistons coach.

As for Iverson's impact, the Pistons have a 23-27 record since Iverson played his first game for the team in November. That's the first time since the end of the 2000-01 season that Detroit has posted a losing record over a span of 50 games within the same season.

Whether Detroit falls out of the playoff race. This is a team with serious issues. I know the Pistons think Rodney Stuckey is/was ready to step in for Chauncey Billups as they positioned themselves for the free-agent class of 2010.

A lot of people thought the Allen Iverson trade was the move that could put them over the top. It changed the whole dynamic of the team, all right. Now, the team is sitting squarely at .500. The one thing definitely going for their playoff hopes is the fact that the teams in the 9-10-11 spots probably aren't strong enough to overtake them.

In 4 months, not 4 years, Joe D can reshape the future
Disappointing. Mystifying. Lifeless. Keep going? Dispirited. Lethargic. Unpardonable. Have we about covered everything? Anything else that needs to be said about Sunday’s crushing defeat at Cleveland, when the Pistons – despite the incentive of national TV in the house of a division rival – didn’t put up much of a fight in falling 33 points down by halftime? When somebody asked Michael Curry after the game if such a slap in the face might “open the eyes” of his team, Curry, now clearly perplexed by the lack of fight his team is showing – the very characteristic that enabled his entire NBA career – answered about as honestly as he could: “I mean, how much more open do the eyes have to be?” Make no mistake about it, when Joe Dumars pulled off the Chauncey Billups-Allen Iverson trade, he knew there was a possibility it wouldn’t yield immediate benefits. Iverson, for all his wondrous talents, is one of the more difficult players in the league to just drop into the middle of your lineup. So Dumars understood the potential to struggle was there. But it’s a fair guess to say he never imagined the struggles would last this long, or become so formidable. And fans are reacting in force to the worst stretch of basketball this team has seen since the first year of the Dumars reign, when he inherited a team practically devoid of assets. Accustomed to extraordinary success – seven consecutive 50-win seasons just isn’t the norm – Pistons fans are openly questioning everything from Dumars’ vision to Curry’s coaching to the team’s collective will.

But let’s take one step back and look at the big picture. What’s the worst-case scenario here? Well, at 27-27, and having lost 15 of their last 20 games since beating Denver on the road without both Rip Hamilton and Rasheed Wallace on Jan. 9 to reach 22-12, the Pistons are in some danger of missing the playoffs altogether – almost unthinkable even a week ago. Let’s start from that worst-case premise: The Pistons miss the playoffs. What keeps a fan base going in difficult times? Easy: The belief that the future will be brighter. Do Pistons fans have to engage in self-delusion to swallow that medicine? Not even a little bit. Rodney Stuckey’s current slump aside, he gives the Pistons a 22-year-old building block at what has become the most important position in the game. Tayshaun Prince and Rip Hamilton, both affected by the adjustment to playing with Iverson, remain in their primes. Arron Afflalo, Jason Maxiell and Amir Johnson are young players with value, whether used here or in trade. Miss the playoffs and they’d have a lottery pick – not to mention three more picks in the top half of the second round. And those are only the appetizers. Ninety percent of why Pistons fans should believe better days are coming, and soon, is tied to their cap standing. With more money to spend than anyone this side of Oklahoma City come July 1, Joe Dumars is going to aggressively remake this team. Probably by July 15, he will have added at least one and, quite possibly, two major pieces.

The phone calls he took leading up to the trade deadline give him even more reasons to believe the possibilities around draft day and into free agency can dramatically transform the Pistons over the summer. And dramatically isn’t too strong a word. There is a scenario out there that could see the Pistons landing two All-Star types, for instance, one with their free-agent booty, one via a trade that will be judged to be decidedly in their favor. That’s the outlook as of late February. There are going to be plenty of other scenarios that present themselves in May, June and July, as teams dropping from contention start fixing their gaze on next season and beyond. GMs more desperate to remake their teams than Joe D, and dealing from far less favorable conditions, are going to be calling him based on the Pistons’ standing under the salary cap. The opportunities those GMs have to move good players they can no longer afford are few – the Pistons are going to be one of three or four teams with the space to accept an eight-figure salary, and not all of those teams figure to be willing recipients. How attractive those offers eventually get, Joe D can’t fully appreciate now. But what he’s heard already assures him this much: His phone will be ringing early and often. And in that alone, Pistons fans can at least know that as tough as the present is to endure for a franchise accustomed to unusual sustained success, the future – and we’re talking about four months from now, not four years – looks very bright, indeed.

Pistons (78) @ CAVS (99)
The Cavs wanted to wear one of their umpteen alternate jerseys leaving the Pistons to their home jerseys at Cleveland’s Quicken Loans Arena. They might as well been white flags. The Pistons were never in this game as they dropped a season high 6th straight game.

We’ve been talking about the Pistons playing .500 ball for a long time and last night they went out and made it official. The effort, well there was no effort. The defense was token if you’re being polite. “We stunk the gym out,” Allen Iverson said. “We usually play together on the road, but we just acted like strangers out there. We didn’t get it done.”

Even that is understating it. I was also wondering how The Answer The Contract has come to be the team’s official spokesman after every game? In lieu of the blow out we got to see Walter Herrmann (13 pts) in action. He was actually pretty aggressive so look for Curry’s next epiphany to be moving him to the starting lineup.

Allen Iverson Has Never Looked Old
To me, at least. He has aged, but he has not ever looked to be lacking vigor. Until yesterday.

TrueHoop reader Chris points out that Allen Iverson had a double indignity on national TV against the Cavaliers. Not only did LeBron James dunk the ball violently, in a manner that later ricocheted off Iverson's head, but Iverson was also the victim of a super-freaky James block of what was one of Iverson's less blockable moves.

Not to mention, the Cavaliers romped to victory, and the Pistons have lost six straight. This is the first time I can remember seeing Iverson apparently lacking the weapons to even stay in the fight.

And the Oscar Goes to…. Michael Curry
For “From Feared to Absurdity”

……First off I would like to thank God, if it weren’t for him I wouldn’t be standing here today. Joe Dumars for giving me this once in a lifetime opportunity to coach these players. For pulling off a trade for Allen Iverson that has a lot to do with me standing here in front of you right now. To Flip Saunders putting up the wins, but not getting it done come playoff time. To my wife for believing in me, David Stern, Mike Brown, The Thunder - a class organization - The Bobcats, The Bucks… oh my, who else do I need to thank? Mr. D for running a class organization. Chauncey Billups….who am I forgetting? Oh and like they always say… it’s all about rotations.

Rotations, Rotations, Rotations!
THANK YOU!!!!!

Detroit (14) 27-27 Pace: 85.9 (29), Off: 107.6 (23), Def: 108.7 (13)
The Pistons have lost 15 of their last 20 games and are just five away from their highest loss total since 2001. Aside from a couple of games this week (they were competitive with the Spurs on Thursday), their defense has been terrible (112.0) over that stretch and the offense hasn't been able to do much against the better defensive teams.

21 (20) Pistons 27-27 We all knew integrating Iverson was no snap, but who saw the Pistons struggling to score with AI like they have? They've been held under 80 points seven times this season, second only to the Bobcats (eight).

McGrady to have knee surgery Tuesday
Houston Rockets star Tracy McGrady is having season-ending surgery on his left knee.
McGrady has been bothered all season by soreness. The procedure is scheduled for Tuesday in Chicago.

The team had never officially confirmed McGrady would have surgery, and general manager Daryl Morey said last week that the Rockets wanted to talk to McGrady about his decision.McGrady first revealed that he would undergo microfracture surgery in an interview with ESPN's Stephen A. Smith last Tuesday. McGrady then made a public announcement on his Web site the following day.

McGrady has been consulting with doctors since the All-Star break. He's missed Houston's last four games and 21 overall because of lingering soreness in the knee, the aftermath of arthroscopic surgery last May. The seven-time All-Star was averaging 15.6 points, five assists and 4.4 rebounds.

Bail denied for double-murder suspect
A judge in Chicago has denied bail for an attorney accused of killing New York Knicks' player Eddy Curry's ex-girlfriend and their infant daughter. Fredrick Goings is charged with first-degree murder in the January shooting deaths of 24-year-old Nova Henry and her 10-month-old daughter, Ava. Curry was the biological father of Ava, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

In court on Monday, prosecutors called the baby Ava Curry Henry and later said they believe she was Curry's daughter. Authorities say Goings and Nova Henry were romantically involved and that Goings represented Henry in a paternity case with Curry.

Prosecutors allege Henry tried unsuccessfully to end a romantic relationship with Goings and was disputing a $23,500 legal fee Goings had charged her. Goings' attorney, John Lyke, says his client is innocent.

Barkley pleads guilty in DUI case
Charles Barkley pleaded guilty to drunken-driving charges in Scottsdale, Ariz., on Monday and will serve time in jail, court records show. The TNT basketball analyst and former All-Star faced two counts of DUI from a New Year's Eve arrest in Scottsdale. He also plead responsible to a third charge of running a red light, according to KTAR Radio.

Barkley will serve five days in jail, must enter an alcohol awareness program and was fined more than $2,000. Under Arizona law, he'll also be forced to install an ignition interlock device on his vehicles. He starts serving his sentence March 21. Barkley, 45, had a blood-alcohol level of .149 percent, nearly twice the legal limit of .08 percent in Arizona when he was pulled over.

Barkley took a six-week leave of absence from his job with TNT but returned recently after apologizing for the incident. "I think that a DUI is unacceptable," he added. "That can't happen and I've got to challenge other people, not just celebrities or jocks. You have to really think before getting behind the wheel after you've been drinking."
