The Detroit Pistons are looking less and less like an Eastern Conference contender as the season progresses. The Miami Heat could soon be in the same situation if Dwyane Wade doesn't start getting some help. After suffering their seventh loss in 11 games despite Wade's career-high point total, the Heat hope to put together a more balanced offensive effort as they try to send the Pistons to their seventh straight defeat Tuesday night in Miami. Wade topped his previous career best of 48 points with 50 on Sunday, but it wasn't enough to counter the balanced attack of Orlando, which had seven players score in double figures in the 122-99 win. Wade shot 17-for-30 (56.7 percent) from the field while the rest of the Heat combined to go 20-for-59 (33.9 percent). Rookie forward Michael Beasley, the only other Miami player to score in double figures with 14 points, was 6-for-15. "It's great to know you can score 50 points, but it would be better to walk away with a win," Wade said. "It's bittersweet. No player alone can carry everything."

Wade's teammates know they'll have to step up for Miami (29-26) to snap out of its 4-7 funk since Jan. 30. "Dwyane's a great player, but he can't do it by himself," veteran forward Udonis Haslem said. "We know that everyone has to do their job and play their role." First-year Heat coach Erik Spoelstra acknowledged he's worried with his team's production. "There's some concerns," he said. Facing the reeling Pistons (27-27) could be the answer for the Heat. Detroit, an East finalist each of the last six seasons, has lost 15 of 20 since Jan. 10, including six straight for the first time since Feb. 3-17, 2004. The Pistons haven't had a longer skid since they dropped seven in a row from Feb. 21-March 2, 2003. Detroit trailed by as much as 36 in a 99-78 loss at Cleveland on Sunday night. "We stunk the gym out," said Allen Iverson, who had a team-high 14 points and went 6-for-16. "We acted like strangers out there tonight."

Pistons coach Michael Curry will need to find an answer to his team's struggles soon. Sunday's loss in Cleveland was only the beginning of a brutal five-game road trip that finishes with games against New Orleans, Orlando and Boston. "I'm sure anytime you lose, it affects (your mental state)," Curry said. "But what are you going to do to correct it? If your confidence is down, get your shot down, get more shots, work a little harder, play a little harder, get some easy ones in the game, be there for defensive stops, help your teammate, help yourself." Curry hopes his club can rebound by taking advantage of an opponent it's dominated in recent years. The Pistons have won 17 of their last 20 regular-season meetings with the Heat, including six straight. In the teams' first meeting this season, Detroit got 18 points apiece from Rasheed Wallace and Rodney Stuckey in a 93-90 home win Feb. 4. Wade had 29 points, seven rebounds and 13 assists in that game but went just 10-for-31 from the field - including a missed 3-pointer at the buzzer - as Miami shot 38.6 percent as a team. Because of injuries, Wade has played in only three of the Heat's eight games against the Pistons since the teams met in the 2006 East finals - won by eventual champion Miami. He's 26-for-79 (32.9 percent) in those contests.

Charles Barkley to serve jail time for DUI
Charles Barkley will serve time in jail after pleading guilty Monday to charges of driving drunk. According to Scottsdale court records, the 45-year-old former NBA star pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges related to the same drunken-driving arrest.

Barkley, who works as a TV analyst, is set to begin a five-day jail sentence on March 21. The Hall of Famer must pay more than $2,000 in fines and attend an alcohol treatment program. Under Arizona law, he'll also be forced to install an ignition interlock device on his vehicles.

His attorney was not immediately available for comment. Barkley was stopped by police Dec. 31 shortly after leaving a Scottsdale nightclub. He was arrested after failing a field sobriety test. He had a blood-alcohol level of .149 percent, nearly twice the legal limit of .08 percent in Arizona when he was pulled over.

New York 123, Indiana 119: Nate Robinson scored a season-high 41 points (32 in the second half), including the tie-breaking lay-up with 26 seconds left for the host Knicks. Jarrett Jack scored a season-high 33 points and Marquis Daniels matched a season best with 28 for the Pacers.
New Jersey 98, Philadelphia 96: Devin Harris hit an unbelievable lunging half-court shot at the buzzer to help the host Nets snap a season-high five-game losing streak. With 1.8 seconds to play, the Nets quickly inbounded the ball to Harris, who bobbled it after bumping into the Sixers' Andre Iguodala and then heaved in the winner from in front of the scorer's table.

Utah 108, Atlanta 89: Deron Williams scored 15 points with 10 assists as the host Jazz welcomed back Carlos Boozer from a three-month absence to win their fifth straight. Boozer played just 21 minutes, scoring two points and grabbing five rebounds.
Boston 114, Denver 76: The Celtics shot 49% from the field (41-83) and were 14-for-23 from behind the arc, handing the Nuggets one of the worst home losses in their history. Ray Allen scored 26 points and Paul Pierce 22 as the Celtics raced to a 60-37 halftime lead.

New Orleans 112, Sacramento 105: Chris Paul scored 27 points and had 13 assists to lead the visiting Hornets. Kevin Martins scored 32 for the Kings.

The Golden State Warriors visit the Los Angeles Clippers tonight without the services of Monta Ellis who is reportedly suffering from ankle stiffness. The Clippers have been injury ravaged as of late but should get Zach Randolph back fresh off of his recent suspension.

- Mike Taylor finally returned after breaking his thumb, getting eight minutes in the loss to the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday. He scored just a point, clearly shaking off the rust.

- The Golden State Warriors are without Monta Ellis for a week or two (ankle stiffness). The Warriors do get Andris Biedrins back from an ankle injury.

- It's time for a Clipper M*A*S*H update. Al Thornton has a sore arch and is out tonight. He hopes to play on Wednesday against the visiting Boston Celtics.

- Chris Kaman has been progressing but a three-day bout with the flu has set him back. Coach Mike Dunleavy said he's running straight and shooting well. Next they'll get him doing lateral movement, etc. My take - two weeks.

- Marcus Camby has had an extremely serious ear thing going on. He's cleared to play but it's not clear yet if he's OK to fly. Play-by-play announcer Ralph Lawler offered to drive Camby to Sacramento on Friday. The truth - it could come down to ground transportation if Marcus isn't given the green light to go by air.

The good news for the Nuggets is that Kenyon Martin is expected to play this evening and is likely to get the start next to Johan Petro. George Karl's rationale for starting Petro is that he wants to keep Chris Andersen as his first big off the bench.

Utah Jazz forward Carlos Boozer returned to the starting lineup for the first time in more than three months Monday against the Atlanta Hawks.

The two-time All-Star practiced Sunday and is playing for the first time since undergoing knee surgery on January 10. "This is the best it's felt since I've been hurt," Boozer told the Desert News.

Boozer missed 42 straight games since suffering a strained quadriceps tendon in his left knee during a game against Milwaukee on November 19. Loose cartilage in the knee continued to nag Boozer, who ultimately underwent surgery. Boozer has averaged 20.5 points and 11.7 rebounds in 12 games. The Jazz were 8-4 with Boozer in the lineup and went 25-19 without him.

Golden State Warriors center Andris Biedrins returned to the lineup during Monday's 118-105 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers.

Biedrins scored four points and added four rebounds in 16:32 of action after being sidelined more than two weeks with a sprained right ankle. "I didn't think he was very good," Warriors coach Don Nelson said. "It was his first game back. I didn't think he was very active. I was careful with him tonight. We have three days off, so next game he'll be ready to roll."

The 22-year-old suffered the injury on February 6 and the Warriors won four of five games without his services. "(The ankle) was a little bit weak, but otherwise it was good," Biedrins said. "I just need to build the strength up." Biedrins is averaging 13.0 points and 11.8 rebounds in 50 games this season.

Detroit (27-27) at Miami (29-26), 7:30 p.m. EST
If it's hard to recognize the Detroit Pistons, it's because they are playing like they don't even know themselves. Detroit hopes to avoid a seventh straight loss when it visits Dwyane Wade and the Miami Heat on Tuesday. The Pistons are coming off a 99-78 pounding at the hands of the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday, a contest that saw Detroit fall behind by 33 points at the break. "We were out on the court playing like either we don't like each other, or are we strangers? That was disappointing," Detroit coach Michael Curry said.

Allen Iverson scored 14 points in the loss to lead Detroit and even he admitted how bad the Pistons looked. "We stunk the gym up," Iverson said. "We usually play together on the road, and we just acted like strangers out there tonight. We didn't get it done."

The Heat are coming off a blowout loss themselves as they lost to the Orlando Magic, 122-99, on Sunday. Although the rest of his team struggled, Wade poured in a career-high 50 points on 17-of-30 shooting in the loss. The outburst moved Wade into the lead for the league's scoring title at 28.8 points per game. LeBron James is second at 28.7 per contest. A loss drops Detroit below .500 for the first time since it was 4-5 on November 17, 2006.

Rasheed Wallace, Richard Hamilton in middle of ESPN's basketball state debate
ESPN's RISE Web site is comparing states according to the high school basketball talent it produced. This week's matchup features Pennsylvania and Michigan.

Michigan's represented by the likes of Magic Johnson, Glen Rice, Derrick Coleman, George Gervin, Rudy Tomjanovich, Steve Smith, Chris Webber and Dan Marjerle. The Keystone State boasts players like Kobe Bryant, Billy Owens, Wilt Chamberlain and Earl Monroe. But an ESPN video to go along with this story highlighted two Pistons with Pennsylvania ties: Rasheed Wallace and Richard Hamilton.

Wallace was the 1993 USA Today player of the year for Philadelphia Simon Gratz and Rip is perhaps Coatesville's best player ever. Both were McDonald's All-Americans.

It's no time to point fingers, Pistons coach Michael Curry says
It was a lively group at the conclusion of Pistons practice Monday afternoon at American Airlines Arena. There was joking around and laughs as the team had just gone through an intense and active workout. It was a far cry from the 15 hours earlier where all you heard were muted words following the 99-78 drubbing at the hands of the Cavaliers in Cleveland. The Pistons fell behind by 36 points in their sixth straight loss, dropping to .500 (27-27) on the season. It was the first game in a tough eight-day, five-game trip -- tonight's meeting with the Heat will be the second. It appeared things were well Monday, but when a team that has made six straight appearances in the Eastern Conference finals faces falling below .500 this late in the season for the first time since the 2000-01, it's definitely fair to ask whether the confidence will fade. Will finger-pointing set in?

Rip Hamilton seemed to be questioning the decision-making process of coach Michael Curry after Sunday's loss when he brought up the frequent lineup changes -- including the decision to make him the team's sixth man. "There's been a whole lot of changes this year," Hamilton said. "We've been changing stuff all through the season. "For one example we just put (Antonio) McDyess back in the starting lineup and things like that. There's been a lot of different changes. Me coming off the bench, so ... there's something different." When asked to clarify his comments Monday, Hamilton said: "I didn't agree with coming off the bench, but I did it to help the team and to win games. But we haven't won games with me doing that."

When asked if he has confidence in the coaching staff, Hamilton said: "I'm always confident with what we have. We just got to win that one game. Once you win that one game, hopefully you can turn things around." Curry has been critical of the team's ability to handle adversity. And he says it didn't start this season. He points to the team's collapses in the conference finals the last two seasons. Curry reminds us of how he was a no-nonsense player who didn't make excuses, and it's obvious he wishes this team would take on more of his personality. "For guys that have been here, this is their first time experiencing it now," Curry said. "This is the first time they've experienced in the regular season. "The last few years, the tough times came in the conference finals. But whenever you get to that point and it gets really, really tough, you got to work that much harder and you got trust each other that much more and you got to cover each other that much more." Now, no one is saying that a full-scale war is about to break out in the Pistons' locker room. One gets the feeling that a four-game winning streak could be a cure for whatever ails the team."It's how you respond," Curry said. "If you point fingers when things go wrong, that's what people are going to remember. "If you fight and just go out help your teammates, that's what people will remember."

All culpable for Pistons' decline
"Going to work" once stood for something, but now it's nothing more than mindless marketing blather. These Pistons aren't worthy of their hard hats and sledge hammers. They didn't just quit Sunday in Cleveland. They didn't even try.If that's the Pistons' battle plan for the final seven weeks of the regular season, then they should let everyone know as soon as possible so everybody can stop investing their money and their even more fiercely protected passion on this flaming, crashing Hindenburg of a season. Firing Michael Curry right now solves nothing. The Pistons were long ago unmasked as an NBA championship contending imposter. Giving him the ax right now only further perpetuates that public charade. And the last thing this organization requires right now is another readily available coaching scapegoat. Firing Curry now only gives those others equally culpable for this ugly transitional period cover. Nobody gets off the hook on this one. Not Bill Davidson. Not Joe Dumars. Not the players. Three decisions placed the Pistons in this predicament: The Darko Disaster in the 2003 draft cost them that transitional star. This is hardly a breaking news alert. Many dismissed this inevitability as irrelevant as the Pistons advanced to six straight Eastern Conference finals, but they could only outrun that mistake for so long before it eventually bit them in the back pocket. It's wasted breath arguing whom they should've taken instead.

The bottom line is that an already good team cannot blow the No. 2 pick overall in what will go down as the deepest draft talent pool this decade in the NBA. But the Pistons did precisely that. Davidson couldn't keep his ego in check regarding Larry Brown. The Pistons knew Brown was a drama queen requiring exceptionally high maintenance when they hired him, but the normally reclusive Davidson made his distaste for Brown's dramatics public after he broomed him for Flip Saunders following the Pistons' Game 7 defeat in the 2005 NBA Finals. Davidson could've found a way to coexist with Brown, but he believed his players were more important than the person coaching them. That move effectively gave the players free run of the asylum, enabling their insurrections and pretty much excusing them from accountability. From that point on, when things went wrong -- it's primarily the coach's fault. They never recovered defensively and emotionally from the loss of Ben Wallace following the 2006 season. The Pistons made the right move in not matching Chicago's outrageous four-year, $60-million free-agent contract. Wallace's energetic playing style had eroded, and he lost a battle for the soul of the team with Chauncey Billups. But since he left, the Pistons haven't found a comparable center who could move Rasheed Wallace to his more comfortable power forward position. Nazr Mohammed and Kwame Brown were both failed experiments.

And perhaps more important, they haven't played good weak-side defense since Big Ben departed, explaining why opposing teams have penetrated the lane with impunity the past three seasons. It's finally time to look at this current mess through unprejudiced eyes. Curry doesn't get a free pass. He isn't a good head coach right now. When a team dogs it like the Pistons did in that 99-78 embarrassment against the Cavaliers on Sunday, it's a reflection of the head coach's inability to connect with his players. Curry was a fighter as a player, stretching himself beyond his physical limitations. But the players aren't getting that message. It's because they aren't listening, but shouldn't that also fall on the players and their reluctance in accepting the changes that the Pistons must make? You want to fire Curry following this season? That's fine. But you had better fire certain players as well and turn what has been discreetly referred to as a "retooling" phase into in a full-scale "rebuilding" process that might not find rock bottom until it transforms "Dee-troit Bask-et-ball!!!" into the quiet indifference of the franchise's teal-colored uniform era 10 years ago.

With a loss tonight in Miami, the Pistons (27-27) would fall below .500 this late in a season for the first time since 2000-01. Those Pistons, coached by George Irvine, were 21-34 after 55 games and finished 32-50. They wore the teal jerseys and were led by Jerry Stackhouse and his 29.8 scoring average. Also notable: Michael Curry started 58 games, Mateen Cleaves played in 78, and Ben Wallace averaged 13.2 rebounds.

Antonio McDyess admits Pistons lack leadership
There appears to be an increasing disconnect between Curry and his players, the kind of issues a team leader would work to hash out before things become worse.

Things are getting progressively worse, and there are no signs from within the Pistons roster that anyone is ready, let alone willing, to stand up and be accountable for this team’s success moving forward.

Pistons forward Antonio McDyess said there is a leadership void on the team. “We don’t have that one guy that steps in, get on a person for doing something wrong,” McDyess said. “We have certain nights where one person would say something, and another would, but we need that one person who will be there, and we know that they got our back and that they’ll get on us when we do wrong and direct us when we’re going wrong. We don’t have that.”
