how much of an impact has Bynum's injury had on the team's defense?
i know it wasn't very good sometimes with him, but it has really been bad at times without him

I agree the Lakers play D when they want to play D. I may be completely off here but I think the Lakers coaching staff is holding some things back for the playoff's or the finals. You can say what you want but the Lakers held Lebron to 5-20 in CLE which is his worst shooting of the year. That was without Bynum. He shot 9-26 in LA with Bynum.
You can see when the Lakers play better D, fight harder through screens, the big guys push out further on P/R. The Lakers appear to be focused on getting to the finals, the bigger picture. But they kind of lose focus on the here and now games vs sub par teams. One thing I see that has been identified is the corner 3 pt shot. I notice that teams leave their PF out with their 3pt shooter on the baseline on the weak side of the court. Then they may do a pick and roll that ends up with them swinging the ball around to the guy in the corner. Well the Laker who is suppose to get out is always picked up by the PF on the baseline and it's open 3 season. I've seen Varejao, Perkins do this to the Lakers. Players have to be ready to get around this screen when they see the ball rotating......

There's no question we've had moments where we look fantastic. LeBron obviously missed a lot of chippies in the most recent game, but we kept him surrounded by bodies and did our part. The effort and execution was excellent.
Unfortunately, for every effort like that we seem to turn in two like the one we saw against Minnesota -- lazy and uncommitted. How much of that is much of that is effort and how much of that is pure capability, I don't know. But it's obviously a combination of the two.
Maybe we suddenly become more consistent in the playoffs. It's entirely possible. I just think it's a much smarter and safer plan to play hard on a consistent basis, and use the regular season to build a foundation, rather than counting on flipping a switch later on, or holding anything in reserve from a strategic standpoint.
This just doesn't make much sense to me.
