Current vs Old Pacers ... who wins?
Just thought about a matchup between our current team and old still active Pcaers players. Who will win this?
Current:
PG Ford/Jack/Diener
SG Dunleavy/Rush
SF Granger/Daniels/Graham
PF Murphy/Baston/McRoberts
C Hibbert/Foster/Nesterovic
Old:
PG Johnson/Murray/Gill
SG Jackson/Jones/Rush
SF Artest/Stojakovic/Jones/Williams
PF O'Neal/Harrington/Diogu/Powell
C Miller/Dampier
I think we currently are better at the PG spot, maybe have a slight advantage on the wings but lose it in the frontcourt. The old team has a better bench but is as a team old and have players with injury problems.
I say it's a tie!

No way it's a tie.
Artest's defense would shut down Granger and/or Dunleavy. That's enough to make up for Tinsley being on the floor. Anothony Johnson would be solid against Ford or Jack.
The old frontcourt of Miller/O'Neal would dominate ours right now.
This game wouldn't be close in my opinion.

If we're going with the current effectiveness of the players, it'd be close, but if we're going with the past lineup's days with the Pacers, we'd be creamed.

Why's Dampier on the roster? He was before the Pacers' Finals Team even.

Also, we never had Artest or Stojakovic at same time...and when Miller and Artest were still here together, we had Reggie.
That being said, its not even close. A blowout, the old team would smack this one around.

Re: Current vs Old Pacers ... who wins?
You guys are missing what his criteria. Former Pacers who are still active. I don't think he meant former Pacers that played together and are still active. Either way, this current squad would win based off what little chemistry we have. You throw all those former players on a roster right now and our current roster would smoke them.
As far as Artest shutting down Granger and Dunleavy, what happened last time we played in Houston?

Dampier on the roster still doesn't make sense though. It seems like this is new core versus our previous core. Throwing him in it, when we only played like a season here and was before even the Finals core isn't appropriate in this instance.

Re: Current vs Old Pacers ... who wins?
It's definitional.
Our current team, today.
vs.
Players who used to be on the team and are still in the league elsewhere.
Dampier qualifies under that criteria.
I have no clue what it accomplishes, unless it's some Byzantine attempt to look at what might have been (which would require some truly tortured logic).

I have no idea what you're talking about, and clearly, neither do you.

You seem really hung up on this Dampier issue. Considering most of the former players listed were AFTER the Finals team, how is the list any different with Dampier being before the Finals team?
Anyway, like count55 and I both pointed out, the criteria clearly pointed out in the original post...
Former players who are still in the league. He didn't say anything about it being former players who were productive, long-tenured, or anything else, only that they used to play for us and now play somewhere else in the NBA.

I believe it's pretty evident that Artest was at his best before the brawl. So in this case, are we talking about the old Artest or the current Artest?
The older Artest on such a defensive minded team would most likely shut down Granger is what I was trying to say.

So basically the core of our powerhouse teams vs the team that can't break .500?
Hmmmm, this is a tough one.

Re: Current vs Old Pacers ... who wins?
We could add Bayless to the second team.
Let's get this straight:
For the former Pacers team, it's anyone who was on the Pacers at any point in time that is now with some other team. The question is, are we judging them by their time with the Pacers, or their effectiveness with their current team? There's a huge difference between Stojakavic the Pacer and Stojakavic the Hornet. There's a difference between Artest the franchise destroying beast and Artest the Rocket. Big difference between Brad Miller the Pacer and Brad Miller the Bull. Everyone knows the rosters of both teams, they're right there at the top.

Re: Current vs Old Pacers ... who wins?
My intention was indeed to judge all the active ex Pacers in their current state. Thus the declined JO instead of the Allstar JO etc.
And there's no meaning to this just for fun.

Re: Current vs Old Pacers ... who wins?
How about the 1969/1970 ABA Pacers as the best Pacers team. Mel Daniels, Roger Brown, Freddie Lewis, Bob Netolicky, Billy Keller. I used to go to the old Coliseum and watch the games, and listen to them on the radio, announcer was Jerry Baker.

Re: Current vs Old Pacers ... who wins?
I'm well aware of the criteria. If it's just for fun, that's fine, but I'm not sure what having Dampier in the equation brings to the table. That's just me. It seems to me that this topic would be more interesting if it was previous core (JO, Reggie, Jack, Harrington, Tinsley, etc.) vs. new core (Granger, Murphy, Dunleavy, Ford, etc.)

Harrington and Jack weren't on the same team together.
The 61-21 season was:
Tinsley
Miller
Artest
JO
Foster
Harrington 6th Man
The following season was supposed to be
Tinsley
Miller
Artest
JO
Foster
Jack 6th man
But it ended up being
Tinsley
Miller
Jack
JO
Foster

Yeah, they were. Harrington and Jackson were both traded to GS for Murphy and Dunleavy, just not with Reggie Miller on the team.

Well, then maybe we should pick one old core instead of an amalgam of two different ones.

Re: Current vs Old Pacers ... who wins?
No one has picked any old core though that's the thing. This thread is current Pacers vs. anyone ever to put on a Pacers' uniform that is still active. I was merely suggesting something.
