Rookie Coach Curry: In the waning minutes of Detroit’s 83-79 loss to the San Antonio Spurs last Thursday, Michael Curry called a timeout and drew up a play with less than 30 seconds left and his team down by only 1 point. What play did they run coming out of the break? Inbounds to Iverson, who dribbled, dribbled, dribbled at the top of the key, pump-faked, then passed to Wallace, who was posted up about halfway between the left block and the three-point line. Blanketed by Tim Duncan on this isolation, he threw up a jumper that fell short. The rest is history.

It’s only one play, but it’s indicative of so many head-scratching sets seen by the Pistons offense at all times of the game. Curry came in with coaching defense as his perceived strength, but you have to score to win, too–and that’s where he seems to be coming up alarmingly short in his early head-coaching tenure. There’s no ball movement, no consistent motion, no bread-and-butter plays, nothing. His manmishandling of the team’s rotation comes in a close second.

If this reads like an epitaph for the Detroit Pistons as we’ve come to know them, it’s because it is. This season hardly tarnishes what they’ve accomplished in recent years, but it’s that success that makes this unfolding catastrophe that much tougher to stomach for its fans. Don’t underestimate Dumars’ ability to get things turned around in a hurry, but in the meantime, th-th-th-th-th-th-th-th-that’s all folks.

http://www.nbamate.com/2009/02/24/how-fued-are-detroit/

How fu**ed are Detroit?
Short Answer: Pretty fu**ed.
Long Answer: Firstly, let’s completely rule out the chance that Detroit miss the playoffs. Detroit suck right now yes, but they will not miss the playoffs for the simple reason that the lower half of the Eastern Conference suck a whole lot more. I am a Detroit fan coming to grips with a catastrophic season after a trade that seems to have caused irreparable damage, but even missing the playoffs is beyond the realms of my comprehension. Missing the playoffs, quite simply, would be the most shocking thing to have happened to this franchise as long as I can remember. Are Detroit really that bad or are they just falling below the lofty expectations we perennially set for them? That may sound silly, but no other team in the league could have labelled itself “disappointed” by making the Conference Finals each and every season. Detroit has. The Conference Finals haven’t been an achievement for the Pistons – they’ve been the expectation. So when the very real chance of a sub-50 win season and an early playoff exit comes along, perhaps everyone just needs to chill the f**k out and set the bar a little lower? WRONG. There’s no other way to put this, so I’ll just say it. Right now, Detroit is probably the worst team in the league. You can say they’re underachieving, yeah, but even that is sugar coating it. Shocked to hear me call them the worst team in the league? Don’t be. When you look at the “W” column over the last 10 games only the Thunder, T-Wolves and Kings are as bad (they’re all 2-8). Firstly, all those teams are in the much tougher Western Conference (and for anyone who likes to argue that the Eastern Conference has regained its credibility, please note that yet again we will see at least one East team who makes the playoffs with a sub-500 record while the worst West playoff team will probably be 12 games over .500). But it’s not the conference that matters.

The real reason why the Pistons are the worst team in the league at the moment is because they have no one playing well. NO ONE. You look at the Thunder and you can see Durant still pouring in points and wowing crowds all around the country. You watch the T-Wolves and you know you’re seeing a future All-Star in Al Jefferson, a guy who until his recent injury was eating 25-15 games for breakfast. You look at the Kings and Kevin Martin is averaging 25-4 so far in February – sure they’re still losing but the guy is putting up 35 points every second night. Every crap team in the league has at least one thing going for them, at least one player who is playing damn well. The Pistons? The Pistons are fu**ed. Sheed doesn’t seem to give to a crap any more and is taking almost half his shots from behind the arc lately. Tayshaun Prince is averaging 11.2 points a game in Feb – to put it in perspective that is a little better than Marc Gasol’s season average. Amir Johnson and Jason Maxiell are combing for a magnificent 6.8 points and 7.2 rebounds per game through Feb – this is supposed to be the future frontcourt for this franchise. Rip is scoring a lot of points but you wonder how he’s still getting 20 points with 10 less minutes per game? (i.e. he’s taking too many shots). Iverson has been a warrior putting up 21 and 5 through Feb but is shooting only 41%. And then we come to Rodney Stuckey, averaging barely 9 ppg and shooting 36% this month. The one thing that is the hardest to swallow about all the abovementioned players is the lack of advancement in Stuckey’s game. Perhaps he’s a bit overwhelmed at sharing the court with a future Hall of Famer in AI? Perhaps he’s trying too hard to fit in his role rather than playing his natural game? I don’t know what the reason is, but early 2009 was supposed to be the time that Rodney Stuckey was soaring in readiness for his first starting playoff role. As it is, he is just one of many Pistons players (i.e. every) who are struggling. We have no Durant. We have no Jefferson. We have a bunch of guys going out there and stinking it up for 48 minutes.

Before I end this rant I want to say one more thing. Rarely does a big trade reap the immediate and painfully visible impact that the Chauncey-Iverson trade did earlier this season. On paper there’s no reason it should have happened. Most people agreed (and would still probably argue) that Iverson is simply the better player of the two, and that any loss in the chemistry and floor-leadership that Chauncey brought would be offset by Iverson’s potent scoring ability and desperation for a ring. Not so apparently. But you have to be careful to cast the blame for the demise of this Detroit team upon Iverson’s shoulders. Iverson is the one guy who seemingly hasn’t given up yet. While Tay sulks about “having never been in this position before” and Rip seems stubbornly intent at proving he can still score 30 off the bench, Iverson is the one guy showing a constant thread of positivity. He has to. Not only does Detroit’s season depend upon it, but so does his legacy. Not the “great player but never won a ring” legacy. But the legacy that Iverson has tried so carefully to avoid his whole career – the unnerving reality that an Allen Iverson team can never win. That Allen Iverson is a disruptive force. That Allen Iverson is a cancer. The last thing a dude like Iverson needs, a future Hall of Famer with an individual career decorated beyond belief, is to have his last title-winning hopes dashed because the very trade that put him there completely destroyed the team. It is unfortunate, but it his happening. This has been a rant. An emotionally charged rant from a Pistons fan who is still clinging to hope but every now and then gives in to the pessimistic demons within. Over the past six years I have been so conditioned to thinking that it doesn’t matter what happens in the regular season, because this team knows how to turn it on come playoff time. Something tells me that is a habit that needs to die. But there is something they say about old habits and dying, and I’m not just about ready to give up yet. I only wish every Pistons player could look me in the eye and tell me that themselves.

Celtics sign Moore for rest of season
The Boston Celtics on Tuesday signed 7-foot forward Mikki Moore, a free agent who was recently waived by Sacramento, for the veteran's minimum of $1.1 million. Moore's salary will be pro-rated.

An 11-year veteran who has played for eight teams, Moore averaged 3.5 points and 3.3 rebounds in 16.2 minutes a game for Sacramento. Still, several playoff-contending teams were interested in signing him, including Denver, Dallas and New Orleans. "It was a tough decision for Mikki," his agent, Mark Bartelstein, said, "but he's known [Celtics coach] Doc Rivers for a long time and they have a good relationship. And at the end of the day, they're the defending champs and they have a heck of an opportunity to get back to the Finals."

Moore played three games for Boston during the 2002-03 season.

Cockrel and most of the other candidates lack the business sense that Detroit needs at this time, said Dunn, who voted for Dave Bing, a former Detroit Pistons star who founded an automotive supplier."Nobody else knows what they are doing or what they are going to do," Dunn said. "You have to have a background in business to deal with the money that could be coming into the city."

Cockrel was endorsed by a number of unions. But Hendrix was endorsed by former Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer, while Bing was endorsed by The Detroit News. Wayne County Sheriff Warren Evans was endorsed by the Detroit Free Press.

The Boston Celtics have signed free agent forward Mikki Moore.

Danny Ainge, president of basketball operations, did not disclose the terms in Tuesday's announcement. The 7-foot, 225-pound Moore was waived by Sacramento last week. He spent part of the 2002-2003 season with the Celtics.

In his 11th NBA season, Moore has career averages of 5.9 points and 3.9 rebounds, shooting 54.8 percent from the field. He has appeared in 15 playoff games, averaging 10.2 points and 5.3 rebounds and shooting 54.5 percent.

Marbury agrees to buyout, expected to join Celtics
Stephon Marbury has agreed to a contract buyout with the New York Knicks, league sources told SI.com. Marbury is expected to sign with the Boston Celtics as a free agent before March 1.

Marbury had been at odds with the Knicks while failing to play for them this season, and he faced an arbitration hearing with the team Tuesday. The buyout was not official, according to a league source, but was expected to be finalized Tuesday night.

If he signs with the NBA champion Celtics before March 1, Marbury will be eligible for their playoff roster. He and veteran big man Mikki Moore -- who agreed to terms with the Celtics earlier Tuesday after being bought out by the Sacramento Kings -- would be expected to enhance Boston's bench, which has been weakened by an injury to Tony Allen and the preseason departures of James Posey and P.J. Brown.

Sources: Marbury may head to Boston
The New York Knicks and Stephon Marbury reached a buyout agreement Tuesday afternoon that could clear the way for Marbury to sign with the Boston Celtics. "A comprehensive agreement was made this afternoon between the New York Knicks and Stephon Marbury," the Knicks said in a statement. "Under its terms, the grievance has been resolved and the Knicks have requested waivers on Stephon. No additional terms will be disclosed,"

Marbury is now eligible to play in the playoffs for another team because his release from New York comes before the league's Sunday deadline. The New York Times first reported on its Web site Tuesday afternoon that "all indications were that the two sides had reached agreement on a contract buyout that will free [Marbury] to join another franchise for the stretch run." Another source close to the process indicated that Marbury and the Celtics have already commenced discussions on a contract.

It's believed that Marbury will be forfeiting in excess of $2 million from his $20.8 million salary this season, which would net the Knicks twice that much because of the luxury-tax savings involved. Marbury would then be in position to recoup roughly half of what he's surrendering in his buyout from the Celtics. As ESPN.com reported Jan. 1, Boston has been hoping to sign the wayward point guard to bolster its thin bench if Marbury -- who turned 32 last week -- could manage to extricate himself from the Knicks Marbury hasn't played in an NBA regular-season game since Jan. 11 of last season, but the Celtics have been concerned about their depth all season after the offseason departures of James Posey and P.J. Brown. Boston has since lost star forward Kevin Garnett to a knee injury for the next two to three weeks and reserve swingman Tony Allen to a thumb injury expected to sideline him for eight weeks.

Dumars needs to take responsibility
The 2000-01 season was notable for a several reasons. It was the last season the Pistons wore the hideous teal jerseys. Grant Hill was no longer with the team, instead spending his first of many injury-plagued seasons in Orlando. Fans got to route for Ben Wallace for the first time. The 2000-01 one season was also the last time the Pistons missed the playoffs, finishing with a 32-50 record. Oh yeah, and Michael Curry was on the roster.

Yes, it's true that Curry was on a few winning teams during his playing days in Detroit, but those teams didn't win because of him. The Pistons started winning because of players like Big Ben, Corliss Williamson, Richard Hamilton and Chauncey Billups. Curry was nothing more than a poor man's Bruce Bowen - a very poor man. And now Curry has the keys to the franchise in his pocket, haplessly searching for ways to spark a stagnant offense. Who would've thought Curry and his 4.5 point-per-game scoring average would've trouble teaching a team to play offense? At best, Curry's job with the Pistons should be as a defensive coordinator (which, of course, doesn't exist in basketball) So it's on you now, Joe. Demote him to defensive coordinator. Or just fire him outright.

And once Curry is gone or sitting further down the bench, Joe needs to step out of his plush executive suite and grab the clipboard. Try to fix this mess you've made. Who knows, maybe Dumars being on the sidelines will spark the team to a playoff berth? If not, at least Dumars gave it a try. He can return to his office in the offseason and find a suitable replacement to help develop Rodney Stuckey and return the Pistons to the Eastern Conference elite. But if Dumars is successful, it will make him even more beloved in Motown. Instead of just being one of the best executives in sports, he could be one of the best coaches too.

Wizards' Arenas practicing at full speed; still no timetable
Gilbert Arenas has been practicing full-speed with the Washington Wizards for more than a week as he works his way back from his latest knee surgery.

The extent of Arenas' participation had been kept under wraps, but he spilled the beans Tuesday when he told The Washington Post: "I'm out there feeling like the old Gilbert Arenas again." "I'm running, jumping, dunking, feeling good. No pain, no swelling," Arenas said, according to a posting on the newspaper's Web site. "My balance is back, my speed is back. The only thing I have to get used to again is being around other bodies out there on the court. I'm working on getting timing back. The only thing I'm not doing is playing in games."

Team spokesman Scott Hall confirmed that Arenas began practicing with the team last week, when the Wizards reconvened following the All-Star break, and has gradually increased his workload since then. Interim coach Ed Tapscott said Monday that Arenas had started to do "some shooting and some running up and down the floor" during practice.

Pistons trying to avoid falling under .500
The Pistons will try to stop their downward spiral when they resume a grueling five-game road trip tonight against the Miami Heat at American Airlines Arena.

Detroit suffered its season-high sixth straight loss in the opener of the trek, a 99-78 setback at Cleveland on Sunday night. The Pistons are 27-27 overall and 13-12 on the road. Miami has alternated wins and losses over its last seven games and suffered a 122-99 setback Sunday at Orlando despite Dwyane Wade's career-high 50 points. The Heat is 18-10 at home this season.

Detroit defeated Miami, 93-90, on Feb. 4 at the Palace behind Rasheed Wallace's 18 points and six rebounds. The Pistons have won six straight, nine of 10 and 17 of the past 20 meetings against the Heat.

Marbury free
So, Stephon Marbury is a free man. He and the Knicks have reached a buyout agreement, with the Knicks agreeing to put him on waivers. That means Marbury will be a free agent, likely sign with the Boston Celtics and be eligible for the playoffs.

If there is truly such a thing as a basketball god, then this move will torpedo the Celtics' repeat bid. Listen, I thought it was sickening to watch Glenn Robinson tag along for a ring with the Spurs in 2005, and even more sickening to watch Antoine Walker get a ring with the Heat in 2006. If Marbury, the guy who pouted, malingered and malcontented his way out of New York, while collecting his $20-plus million salary every year, gets a ring -- man, there is no justice.

The Celtics are really pressing their karma on this one.

Wade scored 31 points and set a personal best with 16 assists, leading the Miami Heat to a 103-91 win and handing the Pistons their seventh straight loss - Detroit's longest slide in more than seven years. Daequan Cook scored 16 points, Jermaine O'Neal added 14 and Jamario Moon added 12 for the Heat, who took control with a 22-8 run to close the third quarter and held on from there. Allen Iverson scored 22 points and Tayshaun Prince added 18 for the Pistons (27-28), who fell under .500 this late in a season for the first time since 2000-01. Michael Beasley scored 11 points and Udonis Haslem finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds for Miami. Antonio McDyess shot 8-for-10 and scored 17 for Detroit.

Playing for the first time since Sunday's career-best 50-point outburst at Orlando, Wade missed his first four shots before getting on track. He had his 70th career double-double before the third quarter was done and finished 11-for-20 from the field, getting 10 points in the final 12 minutes to keep Miami in front. His jumper with 2:02 left gave Miami a 98-87 lead, sealing the outcome that provided the Heat with a much-needed boost in the Eastern Conference playoff race. Miami (30-26), which has now doubled last season's win total with 26 games still to play, moved within two games of idle Atlanta for fourth in the Eastern Conference. Detroit (27-28) fell into a tie for sixth in the East with Philadelphia, and needs to win in New Orleans on Wednesday to avoid matching the franchise's longest skid since 1995. The key for Miami was defense in the third quarter, which finally got the Heat some breathing room.

Iverson's layup with 9:05 left in the third put Detroit on top 60-58. The Pistons proceeded to miss 12 of their 13 shots over the remainder of the period, with only six free throws in the final seven minutes of the quarter keeping Detroit within striking distance. McDyess' three-point play with 10 minutes left got Detroit within 82-76, but the Pistons got no closer. Wade scored Miami's next three points, then found Cook for a 3-pointer that restored a 10-point lead. Miami outrebounded Detroit 44-34 - an impressive stat, considering the Heat had been outrebounded by an average of 18 in their last three games.

Curry plans to turn more to Walter Herrmann
Pistons coach Michael Curry said he plans to turn to backup small forward Walter Herrmann in the coming days to add some outside shooting to the team’s attack.

Herrmann has played sparingly this season, but teams have started packing it in to stop guards Allen Iverson and Rodney Stuckey from driving to the basket, so Curry will counter with Herrmann. I know you're wondering whether this is the best Curry can come up with stop the Pistons' six-game slide.

But Curry can use Herrmann at either forward spot. He hasn’t shot well since starting the season strong, but maybe the lack of playing time will serve as motivation. The Pistons play the Heat tonight in Miami.

Sore right knee forces Duncan to sit out vs. Mavs
San Antonio forward Tim Duncan did not play Tuesday night against the Dallas Mavericks because of a sore right knee, leaving the Spurs to tackle their division rivals without two of their stars.

The Spurs provided no other details in making the announcement shortly before tip-off, and coach Gregg Popovich made no mention of Duncan's health while speaking with reporters before the game. San Antonio was already without Manu Ginobili, who has not played since the All-Star break because of a stress reaction in his right ankle. He is expected to miss another few weeks. It is the first game Duncan has missed because of injury this season. Popovich sat Duncan, Ginobili and Tony Parker earlier this month in a loss at Denver in the early stages of the Spurs' recent eight-game road swing.

Duncan leads the Spurs with 20.7 points and 10.7 rebounds per game. His 35 doubles-doubles are third-most in the NBA. It is only the fifth game Duncan has missed to injury the past two seasons. He sat out four games last year with a sprained right ankle.

Blazers' injury-prone Oden to miss two more games
Portland Trail Blazers center Greg Oden will miss at least two more games because of a bone chip in his left knee.

Oden was hurt in a collision during a game at Golden State before the All-Star break. The 7-foot Oden missed the Rookie Challenge and will miss sit out Tuesday's game in Houston and Wednesday's game in San Antonio. Coach Nate McMillan said there was a "slight chance" Oden would participate in practice on Thursday. McMillan said he wanted to see Oden run before determining when Oden would play again. "We thought, everybody thought, he would be able to be moving by now," McMillan said. "Things just keep getting bumped back."

McMillan said doctors have assured him that the injury won't turn into a long-term absence. But McMillan admitted he's starting to get worried. "We are into the part of the season where we need our bigs," McMillan said. Oden, the top pick in the 2007 draft, sat out last season after microfracture surgery on his right knee. He missed six games early this season with a foot injury. The 7-foot Oden has averaged nine points and just over seven rebounds in 39 games this season. Joel Przybilla started for Oden on Tuesday.

Arenas hasn't played all season because of a knee injury that required three operations in a span of 18 months -- which also means the three-time All-Star has yet to play since signing a six-year, $111 million contract with the Wizards last summer.
