Weyinmi Efejuku scored 16 and Providence upset No. 1 Pittsburgh 81-73 on Tuesday night for its first win over a top-ranked team in 33 years.

Sharaud Curry added 15 points for the Friars (17-11, 9-7 Big East), who picked up a big victory for their NCAA tournament hopes.

Blair, the reigning Big East player of the week, averaged 21 points and 20.5 rebounds in wins over No. 1 Connecticut and DePaul that elevated the Panthers to the top spot on Monday. But he picked up two quick fouls -- his third and fourth -- midway through the second half. He finished with 17 points and eight rebounds.

Pistons drop below .500
Not only did Dwyane Wade continue his run of career highs, he sent the Detroit Pistons to a new low. Wade scored 31 points and set a personal best with 16 assists, leading the Heat to a 103-91 win and handing the Pistons their seventh straight loss — Detroit’s longest slide in more than seven years.Daequan Cook scored 16 points, Jermaine O’Neal added 14 and Jamario Moon added 12 for the Heat, who took control with a 22-8 run to close the third quarter and held on from there. Allen Iverson scored 22 points and Tayshaun Prince added 18 for the Pistons (27-28), who fell under .500 this late in a season for the first time since 2000-01. Michael Beasley scored 11 points and Udonis Haslem finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds for Miami. Antonio McDyess shot 8-for-10 and scored 17 for Detroit.

Playing for the first time since Sunday’s career-best 50-point outburst at Orlando, Wade missed his first four shots before getting on track. He had his 70th career double-double before the third quarter was done and finished 11-for-20 from the field, getting 10 points in the final 12 minutes to keep Miami in front. His jumper with 2:02 left gave Miami a 98-87 lead, sealing the outcome that provided the Heat with a much-needed boost in the Eastern Conference playoff race.Miami (30-26), which has now doubled last season’s win total with 26 games still to play, moved within two games of idle Atlanta for fourth in the Eastern Conference.

Detroit (27-28) fell into a tie for sixth in the East with Philadelphia, and needs to win in New Orleans on Wednesday to avoid matching the franchise’s longest skid since 1995. The key for Miami was defense in the third quarter, which finally got the Heat some breathing room. Iverson’s layup with 9:05 left in the third put Detroit on top, 60-58. The Pistons proceeded to miss 12 of their 13 shots over the remainder of the period, with only six free throws in the final seven minutes of the quarter keeping Detroit within striking distance. McDyess’ three-point play with 10 minutes left got Detroit within 82-76, but the Pistons got no closer. Wade scored Miami’s next three points, then found Cook for a three-pointer that restored a 10-point lead. Miami outrebounded Detroit 44-34 — an impressive stat, considering the Heat had been outrebounded by an average of 18 in their last three games.

Heat drop Pistons below .500
This was written on the board in the Pistons locker room: "The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender." The Pistons did not surrender here Tuesday, but they still lost. Dwyane Wade did pretty much whatever he wanted to against several defensive looks, scoring 31 points with 16 assists to lead the Miami Heat to a 103-91 victory over the Pistons.

For those keeping score at home, the Pistons have lost seven straight, their longest losing streak since 2002-03. They are under .500 (27-28) for the first time since 2002. They haven't had a losing record this late in a season since 2000-01. They have now lost 16 of 21 since Jan. 10. Wade showed what a true superstar does: just about everything. Whenever the Pistons played Wade straight up, he beat them -- with a jumper or a drive. When they switched to zone, he passed off to open wing shooters. Daequon Cook, Yakhouba Diawara and Jamerio Moon were a combined 8-for-14 on 3-point attempts. He was especially effective in the final quarter. With the Pistons trying to rally, Wade scored or set up 21 of the Heat's 23 points to keep the Pistons at bay. The Pistons had no answer for any of that.

Allen Iverson had 22 points and Tayshaun Prince 18 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. When you are struggling as badly as the Pistons are right now, every mistake, every failed conversion, is magnified. This game got away from the Pistons in a five-minute span of the third quarter. Tied at 60, the Pistons gave up four second-chance points, all on rebounds that went past Rasheed Wallace. In between, Jamario Moon, one of the guys the Pistons had to leave uncovered to deal with Wade, made a 3-pointer. At the other end Allen Iverson missed an open jumper, a layup, then slowed down to convert what looked to be an uncontested layup, which was blocked by Jermaine O'Neal. Iverson injured his back on the play, but returned before the end of the quarter. The Pistons offense did not. They missed 10 of 11 shots -- one field goal in the final nine minutes of the quarter -- sending the Heat on a 15-5 run and into the fourth quarter with an 80-68 lead. Wade never let them recover.

Tyrese Rice hit a key 3-pointer with 20.5 seconds to play and Joe Trapani scored 19 points to lead Boston College to a 72-67 upset of No. 23 Florida State on Tuesday night.

Rice, who finished with just 11 points, was scoreless in the first half, but hit his 3 as the Eagles were clinging to a one-point lead. Rakim Sanders added 16 points and nine rebounds for Boston College.

Toney Douglas led the Seminoles (21-7, 8-5) with 19 points, but committed six of their 18 turnovers. Soloman Alabi had 16 points and seven rebounds.

Ball tips at 7:30 PM
Oppo Research:The title of that video is “Dwyane Wade dunks Rashard Lewis while scoring 50 points.” The moral of the story, I suppose, is that Dwyane Wade will eat you alive unless Dwight Howard is there to stop him or Shaquille O’Neal is there to comment on his small ears. Or something. I’m not entirely sure what’s going on, but I do know that neither Howard nor O’Neal are on the Pistons, and that if Wade scores 50 tonight, there’s no chance in hell the Pistons will still win by 20.

The Drama: The Pistons have won just five of their last 20 games, and if they lose tonight, they’ll slide under .500 for the first time since November 2006.

Keys for Detroit: Don’t suck.
Question of the Game:Things can’t get worse … can they?

From Forbes.com: “Beginning next season, the league, along with its media partner, Turner Sports, plans to put digital rights for live games into the hands of its 30 teams, according to Commissioner David Stern.” It’s too early to know what this actually means, but in theory it could allow displaced Pistons fans to (legitimately) watch games online at Pistons.com for less money than it’d cost to purchase the NBA’s current online League Pass package, which runs about $90. Stay tuned.

Tony Parker had 37 points and 12 assists with All-Star teammate Tim Duncan sitting out with a sore right knee, and the short-handed San Antonio Spurs held the Dallas Mavericks to their worst offensive showing this season in a 93-76 victory on Tuesday night.

Parker scored 26 points in the first half and shouldered the load without Duncan and Manu Ginobili, who hasn't played since the All-Star break because of a stress reaction in his right ankle.

Michael Finley scored 16 against his former team, and Josh Howard led the flat-looking Mavericks with 19 points.

With starting shooting guard Delonte West inactive two days after returning from the right wrist fracture that sidelined him for 16 games, the Cavaliers relied on a team effort to beat the Memphis Grizzlies, 94-79 on Tuesday night.

Daniel Gibson scored 19 points and Mo Williams added 18. The Cavaliers never trailed, making for a relatively easy night for LeBron James, the NBA's second-leading scorer. James scored 15 points in 30 minutes and didn't play the fourth quarter, thanks to Cleveland's big lead throughout the game.

Rudy Gay and Hakim Warrick scored 13 points apiece for Memphis, which lost its fifth straight.

Kobe Bryant scored 10 of his 36 points in a 3-minute span of the fourth quarter to thwart an Oklahoma City rally and lead the Los Angeles Lakers to a 107-93 victory on Tuesday night.

Kevin Durant scored 32 to lead Oklahoma City in its sixth straight loss. It was his ninth time scoring at least 30 points in the last 10 games, and the 13th time in 17 games, during a surge that's landed him right behind Bryant in fourth place in the NBA in scoring.

Pau Gasol added 14 points, Derek Fisher scored 12 and Luke Walton had 11 for Los Angeles. After averaging 16 rebounds over the last seven games, Lamar Odom had only eight points and eight rebounds.

Pistons' slide reaches seven with loss to Miami
"The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender" is a motivational phrase former Green Bay coaching legend Vince Lombardi used on the Packers. It was scrawled on the dry eraser board in the Detroit Pistons' locker room prior to Tuesday night's game at Miami. Detroit needed more than an inspiration message against the Heat, who pulled away in the second half for a 103-91 win. Miami guard Dwyane Wade, who was coming off a career-high 50 points in a losing effort against Orlando on Sunday, turned in another big-time performance Tuesday. Wade had a career-high 16 assists to go along with a game-high 31 points. "It was an incredible performance he had in Orlando," Miami coach Erik Spoelstra said. "But I think he understood that that's not what it's going to take for us to be successful."

While Wade's play certainly hurt the Pistons, his supporting cast ultimately extended Detroit's season-long losing streak to seven. It is the first time since 2002 that the Pistons have lost so many games in a row. And at 27-28, the Pistons have not been below .500 this late in the season since 2001, the last time they finished with a losing record. "It's disappointing that we're on a streak like this," Pistons coach Michael Curry said. "But like I've been saying, you gotta fight and we have to continue to push them hard and hold them accountable for their perf ormance out on the court." Early on, the Pistons played the way a team fighting for its playoff life should have. They scored the game's first five points, which turned out to be their biggest lead of the game. A 7-0 Pistons run to end the first gave Detroit a slim 25-24 lead after one quarter. The teams battled back and forth in the second quarter, which featured 11 lead changes. Miami's Daequan Cook, the NBA's reigning 3-point shooting champion, had eight of his 16 points off the bench in the second quarter. Most of Cook's damage came against Detroit's zone defense, which wasn't as effective against Miami.

Cook made four of Miami's nine 3-pointers, while the Pistons misfired on 7-of-8 3-point attempts. Even with Cook scoring, the Pistons managed to keep the game relatively close until Wade scored all six of his second-quarter points in the final 1:13 of the quarter that helped lift the Heat to a 52-51 halftime lead. Detroit held its own for most of the third quarter, but an 18-6 run to end the quarter gave the Heat an 80-68 lead. From there, Miami's control of the game was never in doubt. While Curry was disappointed in the game's outcome, he was pleased to see the Pistons compete harder than they did in their previous game, a 99-78 loss at Cleveland on Sunday. "I though guys came out and fought, and had a concentrated effort on the things that we're doing," Curry said. "We just have to get better. We have to play better, 48 minutes. We have to come up with loose balls, come up with stops when we need to, and come up with buckets when we need to."

With Mario Chalmers again in foul trouble, and with Chris Quinn being, well, Chris Quinn, Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra decided to cut the pretense and go with his best point guard.Dwyane Wade couldn't have looked any more at home. A game after serving as a do-it-all scorer with a career-best 50 points in a blowout road loss to the Orlando Magic, Wade this time shared the wealth in Tuesday's 103-91 victory over the Detroit Pistons at AmericanAirlines Arena. "This is so much better," Wade said. "I made the plays that were there. Wade downplays Shaq's impending visit "Some nights my shot is not going to be going, but I've proven I can do other things." With 31 points and a career-high 16 assists, Wade helped the Heat move within two games of the Hawks for the No. 4 seed in the Eastern Conference, with the Heat's next outing Friday in Atlanta."It was an incredible performance he had up in Orlando," coach Erik Spoelstra said of Wade's effort in Sunday's loss. "But I think he understood that that's not what it's going to take for us to be successful."

Sparking a 22-8 run to close the third quarter, Wade pushed the Pistons further into the abyss. "Finally, in the third quarter," Spoelstra said of a stretch when Detroit shot 1 of 13, "we really made a concerted effort to make it tougher for them." The loss not only extended Detroit's losing streak to seven, the franchise's longest since December 2001, it also dropped the Pistons below .500 this late into the season for the first time since 2001. Detroit has not lost eight in a row since January 1995. "We gave the effort. That is something to feel good about," guard Allen Iverson said after leading the Pistons with 22 points. "We just didn't get it done." The best of Wade was needed for the Heat to distance itself from a foe that had won 20 of the previous 24 regular-season meetings, including a matchup last month at the Palace of Auburn Hills.Since that loss in Detroit, the Heat swapped out Shawn Marion for Jermaine O'Neal. But in his fourth appearance for the Heat, O'Neal hardly was a difference maker, with just one first-half rebound, before closing with 14 points and five rebounds. Instead of an improved post offense, it was the outside game that sparked the Heat.

Finally breaking out of a slump that followed his 3-point championship at All-Star Weekend, guard Daequan Cook shot 4 of 8 from beyond the arc to ignite the Heat's 9-of-19 accuracy on 3-pointers. "They were in a zone a lot, sagging off," said Cook, who closed 6 of 11 from the field, slowed only by a shot to the groin that briefly sidelined him in the third quarter. Spoelstra said the early shift to Wade at point guard was by design, to get Cook into the game earlier than usual. "Daequan is a big piece of our success," Spoelstra said. Backup forward Jamario Moon, who also was acquired in the O'Neal deal, added two 3-pointers, as did starting small forward Yakhouba Diawara, with Wade consistently finding the open man. "We've got to keep going," Wade said. Career high in points, followed by a career high in assists. "MVP, that's all I can say," Chalmers said. "He's leading us. He's our leader." The effort left the Pistons dazed and confused. "We were trying to double-team him, but I guess that didn't work," guard Rodney Stuckey said. "He was just finding the guy that was cutting down the middle."

Antonio McDyess could leave Pistons after season
There was little doubt forward Antonio McDyess left all he had on the floor in Detroit's 103-91 loss to Miami on Tuesday. It's been like that throughout his time in Detroit, which may be coming to an end after this season.McDyess, who had 17 points and six rebounds against the Heat, is expected to opt out of his contract this summer and become a free agent. Detroit remains an option, but the team's struggles may lead to McDyess choose to play elsewhere."I hate to sell myself short of anything at this point in my career," McDyess said. "So I have to keep all my options open."

When McDyess became a free agent this fall after reaching a buyout agreement with Denver, several teams pursued him vigorously. McDyess considered Charlotte, Cleveland and Boston before re-signing with the Pistons. "It was flattering, because I didn't have a clue that all those teams were interested in me, not at this point in my career," McDyess said. Those teams and others undoubtedly will be interested in signing the veteran big man this summer.

McDyess remains focused on helping Detroit get into the playoffs, which is becoming a much tougher challenge than he or his teammates thought. If the right changes are made with Detroit's roster this summer, McDyess said he would consider signing a deal that would allow him to finish his playing career with the Pistons. "I just have to see how everything is going to go in the summer with this team, and kind of go from there," McDyess said. "But like I said, it's flattering that there are some teams that still think I can help them win. I definitely feel I have some options."
