Portland Maine is granted D league team

Post#1 » by Prophet_C » Wed Feb 25, 2009 12:58 pm

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

I just heard this on the local sports show and they had the owners Bill Ryan and Jon Jennings on to announce that this November, Portland ME is getting a d league team. They will be playing at the Portland Expo for 24 games a year. The name or affiliate hasn't been chosen yet. There are 6 possible names appoved by the NBA and fans will vote in a month or two on the name. The Celtics are hopeful that Portland is their d league team but nothing is guaranteed and won't be known until after the NBA season.

I'm so pumped. I live outside of Portland and definitely plan on going to several games if not season tickets. :D

I don't have a link just yet but this is definitely legit.

It would certainly make sense for Portland to be Boston's D League affiliate since the close proximity. It would be great to go up and see the young guys play a few games. Also, we would definitely get a lot more coverage in the Globe/Herald of their games. This is definitely good news. I'm pretty sure that the C's have a year to year agreement with Utah so I don't see any reason why this wouldn't happen.

if this isn't going to become the celtics team, it would be really strange.

as someone who grew up on the CT/RI border, I was hoping they would resurrect the providence streamrollers as a NBDL team but this is still pretty cool.

FInally. I've been following this for a while now, because I live about 10 minutes from the expo. The sea dogs and pirates are great, but I've been waiting for Maine to get a basketball team for a long time. I hope they are a Celtics affiliate, but even if they aren't it will still be cool to go watch.

The Celtics are expected to end their partnership with the Utah franchise in the D-League and link up with Portland. Former Celtics assistant coach Jon Jennings, who will be the president and general manager of the Portland team, said, "The NBA D-League is such a valuable tool in the development of young talent, and I'm looking forward to showcasing that talent to the fans here in Maine."

This is awesome, especially for you Maine folk. Should save the owners some money sending the kids up North instead of friggin Utah.

I would guess there will be other East coast teams, otherwise the Maine mini-celtics are going to have the worst travel schedule in the history of US sports.

They should be green and white, and be called the Portland Pine, with C's unis, except this (but a much cooler version):

instead of the shamrock.

That would be cool.

Oh god no. lol

That would be lame IMO. I get it and it makes some sense but I wouldn't want to wear the gear with tree on it.

Hey buddy, got wood?

lol

I'm sticking with it, think it'd be great. However, I imagine it'll be something terrible, totally unrelated to Maine, with obnoxious, loud colors that scream 'amateur'.

Lol ^^

I wouldn't mind it being the lobsters. It'd be funny.

I'm really curious on what it'll be. We've had the Mountain Cats and the Wave.

It'll be something stupid and WNBA-ish sounding, like the Maine Storms or something like that...
