The Pistons (27-28, 13-13 away) will in New Orleans to take on the Hornets (33-22) Tip off is 8:00 pm est from the New Orleans Arena and will be televised locally on Fox Sports Detroit Plus
Hornets’ Snapshot
Home record: 19-9
Vs. East: 12-8
Last game: 2/23 (Mon) W 112-105 @ Kings
Last 10: 5-5
Streak: Won 1
Vs. Pistons: Jan. 17th - HORNETS (91) @ Pistons (85)

I’m hoping the Pistons are looking not lose their eight straight game. But, anymore with this team you can’t really tell what they’re trying to do, or if they’re trying at all. The Pistons have not dropped eight games in consecutive fashion since the 1994-95 season, a year in which they finished 28-54 under coach Don Chaney. You know it’s getting bad when we’re going back past the teal era for runs of futility. The Pistons lost the Hornets a little more than a month ago at the Palace, but have actually won their last 4 road games against the franchise. Unfortunately all those dominant runs against stats have been meaningless this year.

ALSO OF NOTE: Despite being 11 games over .500 the Hornets share the same playoff seeding (6th) as the Pistons … Deconstructing Allen Iverson (movie trailer) … Dice could be done in Detroit after season’s end … Now it’s zone defense and more PT for Herrmann … Celtics pick up former Piston Moore … What happened to Rodney Stuckey? …

Deconstructing Allen Iverson, Movie Trailer

Deconstructing Allen Iverson, Movie Trailer. This documentary is new to me, and to most people. When I saw the video, very little about it was on Google. The movie will be about his life, struggles, and his unique journey. From the title it looks like they are going to peel away the onion layers and find out why Allen Iverson does not like practice, why he does not invite Larry Brown over for tea and scones, and why he finally cut off all of his hair.

If I was a betting man, I would bet that the 2009 NBA All Star game, with the cornrows cut off, was the last chapter. I guess this is coming to theaters in Summer 2009.

Movie clip in the link above^.

What’s Happened to Rodney Stuckey?
Having been thrown into the fire as the Detroit Pistons starting PG in just his second NBA season, Rodney Stuckey has lately been burned by the heat. It’s hard to believe the 6-5 Stuckey could have so much impact on a team laden with All-Stars and at least one future Hall of Famer, but as his game has gone south, so has the Pistons’. After being inserted into the starting lineup shortly after Chauncey Billups was traded to Denver, Stuckey burst onto the NBA scene in his first two months in this new starring role, averaging 16.4 points on 50% FG, 5.6 assists, 3.8 boards, and 1.2 steals. That included a dazzling 40-point effort on December 23 against the Chicago Bulls. The Pistons are banking on Stuckey developing into the new face of the franchise. The talent and potential to be a special player are there, but there’s denying that he’s run into a brick wall.

Over his past 10 games, Stuckey’s production and effectiveness have dipped dramatically. In terms of raw stats, he’s averaged just 8.7 points (on 36% FG), 3.7 assists, 3 rebounds, and 0.4 steals; he’s not going to the free-throw line, either, attempting just 2.3 per game. Getting to the hole and drawing fouls was one of his greatest strengths coming out of Eastern Washington, so that’s just as troubling a statistic as the rest of them. Head coach Michael Curry has repeatedly said that Stuckey is the engine that makes this team go. He’s called on him to be more aggressive, and to worry less about getting his teammates involved and more about playing his style of basketball. Well, it doesn’t seem like anybody on the Pistons is listening to anymore: it’s been 2 weeks since he attempted 10+ shots. So what’s going on? I think the gravity of being the point man on a team going nowhere is getting in his head. The point man on a team that’s been a traditional powerhouse but is coming up alarmingly low in the wins department for the first time in a long time. Filling the shoes of an All-Star floor general like Billups is not an enviable task, especially with expectations set so high. It’s more than that though. He’s playing more minutes and more games than he ever has, and like most young players it’s catching up to him; learning to better deal with that and prepare himself for the mental and physical grind of an 82-game regular season should come in time.

The more pressing concern is that opposing teams have figured out how to guard him, how to limit his penetration and force him into settling for difficult shots or jumpers (and he’s still not a great jump-shooter). It’s a lot more difficult to score at a high efficiency when there’s a game plan focused on stopping you rather than one largely zeroed in on your teammates. This may sound strange, but I think Stuckey will benefit from a clean roster slate. This in-between transition period in Motown is an awkward one for all parties: the vets, the youngsters, the management. Gone next year will (probably) be Rasheed Wallace, Allen Iverson, and Antonio McDyess; maybe even Tayshaun Prince. And though GM Joe Dumars will likely seek new All-Star talent to bring in, this team will be even deeper in Stuckey’s pocket than it is now. For now, however, the education of Rodney Stuckey, starter, will continue to be a learning experience with mixed results.

Coverage Begins at 8:00 PM ET
New Orleans: 33-22 (19-9 home)
Margin: +2.4 ppg (-0.5 last 25%)
Last 10:5-5
Pistons: 27-28 (13-13 road)
Margin: -1.2 (-6.2 last 25%)
Last 10: 2-8

Oppo research: Let’s see. Wednesday night road game against a team that is presently 19-9 at home? There is only one possibly outcome. The Pistons arbitrarily win by eight points. They’ll do so by shooting 15-22 from three point range. Of course, that is certainly not the most likely outcome. The New Orleans Hornets have erased their woes against us by vastly outperforming Detroit this year offensively and defensively. The Hornets aren’t playing that well, but David West made the all-star team anyway. Someday, some curious teenager is going to scroll through all-star game box scores and blurt out “David West? Five time all-star?” Chris Paul has found his Scottie Pippen. Actually, the Pistons have held up well against the Hornets over the past few seasons. In the last matchup between these two teams, the Hornets were against the ropes until Allen Iverson decided to Joaquin Phoenix the first two minutes of the fourth quarter (no kidding, the Hornets scored 9 points in two minutes).
The Drama: If the Hornets wipe the floor with Detroit, apparently it won’t matter one damn bit.

Keys for Detroit:Man the perimeter: Stopping Chris Paul’s dribble penetration is obviously vitally important. But the Hornets are a very good three point shooting team, and so are able to capitalize on Paul’s unique ability to deform the defense. Paul is going to get his, but this team can still be stopped.
Put Prince on Peja: I don’t care if it means putting AI on David West. You have a defender who can help in the lane and still close out on a three point shooter. You do not put him on a guy whose specialty is mid-range jumpshooting. Seriously.
Make Paul work on D: Paul isn’t a great defender, and Tyson Chandler is hobbled. Stuckey had a tough game the other night, but that should not discourage him from taking it to the basket, which prevents Paul from playing the passing lanes.
Question of the game: Can we make it 11 in a row? Would any reasonable person favor the Pistons in any of their next four games?

Allen Iverson leaves Pistons' game vs. Hornets with back stiffness
Allen Iverson is out for the rest of tonight's game against the Hornets with a stiff back. He strained his back in Tuesday night's loss at Miami, but he was able to get the start tonight. After nine minutes and two points on 1-for-4 shooting, he went to the bench and was done for the evening. There was no immediate word as to whether he will be able to play in Friday night's game at Orlando.

Meanwhile, the slumping Pistons are attempting to avoid their longest losing streak in 14 years. Detroit, which has reached the Eastern Conference finals six straight seasons and has made the playoffs every year since 2000-01, fell below the .500 mark with its latest setback, a 103-91 loss at Miami on Tuesday. The Pistons have lost seven consecutive games for the first time since February-March 2003. The franchise hasn't suffered eight losses in a row since Dec. 21, 1994-Jan. 8, 1995, a season in which Detroit finished 28-54. Despite their tailspin, the Pistons are still in the thick of the playoff race in the East. The club is tied with Philadelphia for sixth place in the conference, with eighth-seeded Milwaukee one game back. The Pistons have dropped three straight road outings, including the first two tests of this five-game trek, and are 13-13 as the visitor this season.

New Orleans returns home following a challenging three-game swing out West. After losing to the Lakers and Utah in the first two contests, the Hornets salvaged the trip by handling lowly Sacramento, 112-105, on Monday. Tyson Chandler, New Orleans' leading rebounder with an average of 8.4 boards per game, is back after having not played since Jan. 19 because of a sprained left ankle. The center was traded by the club during that time, but the deal with Oklahoma City was rescinded after Chandler failed a physical with the Thunder. The Hornets, who own a 19-9 record at home this season, topped the Pistons by a 91-85 count in the Motor City last month. Prior to that loss, Detroit had won seven of the last eight meetings between the teams.

Pre-game New Orleans
I've gotten a lot of emails wondering why Allen Iverson is typically the only Pistons player quoted after games. Here's why: He's usually the only starter that makes himself available to the media in a timely manner post-game. We are beholden to deadlines. We get Michael Curry 10 minutes or so after the game ends. Then we walk into the locker room. Typically, Iverson is there waiting for us, eager to get it over with. The other players linger either on the treatment table or in the shower. Some nights we have time to wait them out. Most nights we don't.

So, it's not like he's the spokesman for the team or anything like that. I talked to Rip Hamilton, who is technically the captain, about this before the game. Just to make him aware of it. Hopefully, Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince will start making themselves available sooner, but I am not holding my breath.

I asked Curry if he was contemplating benching Rodney Stuckey and putting Hamilton back in the starting lineup. He's not. I asked if he was worried about ruining Stuckey's confidence. He's not. But he is monitoring the situation closely. As for Iverson coming off the bench, I get no indication that Curry is wavering on that. He made the decision to start him and he's sticking with it. And after 11 different starting lineups, none of which played more than 13 games together, you can't really blame him.

Iverson out
He gave it shot, but Allen Iverson is done for this night. The back he twisted Tuesday in Miami stiffened eight minutes into the game.

Wizards covered up for Arenas
Washington Wizards interim coach Ed Tapscott on Wednesday attempted to clarify the extent of injured star Gilbert Arenas' participation in practice -- and the cover-up that went along with it. The Wizards, at Arenas' request, had played coy after the three-time All-Star returned to practice last week. Then, in a sudden reversal befitting Agent Zero's confounding logic, Arenas decided he wanted the world to know. He told the Washington Post late Tuesday that he was practicing full-speed on his surgically repaired knee and was "running, jumping, dunking, feeling good."

Tapscott confirmed as much, saying Arenas has been doing "a few contact drills" and that "conditioning is a question." He added there remains no timetable for the return of Arenas, who has yet to play since signing a six-year, $111 million contract last summer. "He's trying to do a little more each day," Tapscott said. "Just like everything for a very limited period. And now we'll judge how he responds." Tapscott said he understood why Arenas wanted to keep the news quiet. Arenas' two previous attempts to return were failures, resulting in a total of three surgeries on the same knee over 18 months. "I can understand not wanting to build up expectations of him that can't be fulfilled," Tapscott said. "He's in a tough position, having been out, and trying to work though this."

Yet now those very expectations have been raised by Arenas' comments to the Post, and the exposure of the cover-up put Tapscott in an uncomfortable position as he faced reporters before Wednesday's game against the Philadelphia 76ers. Asked if he had preferred that Arenas had not gone public, the coach said: "There are things you always wish you could have done better. "When you can't go through the process quietly," said Tapscott, with an air of helplessness in his answer, "you go through the process publicly."

Hawks missing two starters vs. Nuggets
The Atlanta Hawks were without starters Mike Bibby and Josh Smith for their game at Denver on Wednesday night.

Bibby was sick and Smith was excused for a family matter, Hawks coach Mike Woodson said. Bibby was replaced by point guard Flip Murray, and forward Zaza Pachulia took Smith's place in the lineup.

The Nuggets, losers of three in a row, were without center Nene for the second straight game. He bruised his right knee in a game at Milwaukee on Sunday night and is expected to be sidelined for a week.

Rasheed Wallace tossed, won't play on Friday at Orlando
Rasheed Wallace's temper can sometimes get the best of him, which is exactly what happened tonight. And it will prove costly, both for him and the Pistons. After Rasheed Wallace was whistled for a technical foul by official Bill Kennedy, Pistons coach Michael Curry soon took him out and replaced him with Antonio McDyess.

Shortly after he arrived on the bench, Wallace tossed a towel into the stands - and automatic technical foul. Because he had already received one technical, the second one meant he was automatically ejected. It gets worse.

The two technicals give him 16 for the season, which means he will not be able to play on Friday against Orlando. After players pick up a 16th technical foul, they must serve a one-game suspension for each other technical foul beginning with No. 16, No. 18, No. 20 ... and so on.

Knicks bring closure to Marbury fiasco, move forward
Donnie Walsh never enjoyed having a role in the Stephon Marbury soap opera, but was prepared to deal with it until he found the right conclusion for the New York Knicks.

That came Tuesday, when what began as an arbitration hearing turned into a negotiation, and the sides came to an agreement that ended Marbury's disappointing and distracting Knicks career. Walsh made it clear that Marbury had to make a substantial concession to arrange his exit. "Obviously the buyout was significant enough for us to stop our worries about the risk of the competitiveness side of it. I don't mean on the basketball floor, but from a financial situation," Walsh said Wednesday. "So we're willing to say, 'OK, we'll do it and you can find your team.'"

They were face-to-face again Tuesday when an arbitrator heard Marbury's grievance of the nearly $400,000 in salary the Knicks docked him after alleging he refused to play in a November game. That was quickly scrapped as buyout talks began after lunch.

David West scored 30 points and grabbed two key offensive rebounds on New Orleans' final possession, helping the Hornets hold off the Detroit Pistons 90-87 on Wednesday night. With the Hornets protecting an 88-87 lead, Chris Paul missed two runners in the lane, but West tipped the first rebound to himself and grabbed the second one cleanly, hitting two free throws after being fouled with 6.7 seconds left. West and Paul, who finished with 20 points and 13 assists, combined for all but two of the Hornets' 25 fourth-quarter points. Walter Hermann missed a 3-pointer that would have forced overtime as the Pistons lost for the eighth consecutive time, their longest skid in 14 seasons. Richard Hamilton scored a team-high 24 points, but Detroit ended the game without Allen Iverson or Rasheed Wallace.

Iverson aggravated a back strain he sustained in Tuesday night's loss to Miami. He started and shot 1-of-4 before leaving late in the first quarter. Wallace was ejected with 7:55 left in the fourth quarter after picking up his second technical foul in 27 seconds. They were his 15th and 16th technicals of the season, meaning he will be suspended automatically for the Pistons' game at Orlando on Friday. Hornets center Tyson Chandler, playing his first game at home since a failed physical aborted a trade to Oklahoma City, received a loud ovation when the starting lineups were introduced. He then scored the first basket of the game on a tip-in, finished with 17 rebounds and helped hold Wallace to one point in the first half. Wallace rebounded with 12 points in the third quarter and hit a 3-pointer to give the Pistons a 67-65 lead at the start of the fourth, but he missed his final three shots before losing his cool. Wallace's blowup helped the Hornets go on a 7-0 run and take a 78-71 lead.

He was called for his first technical after arguing that Sean Marks had gone over his back to tip a rebound to West for a putback. The next time down the court, he was called for a foul on West, went to the bench and was sent to the locker room when he tossed the towel over his head while West was at the free-throw line. Still, the Pistons had a chance to end their losing streak without their two stars. Jason Maxiell scored on a putback to tie the score at 82 with 2:52 left. Paul scored the Hornets' next six points, but Hamilton's baseline shot drew Detroit within 88-87 with 55.4 seconds left, setting up the frantic finish. Peja Stojakovic added 20 points for the Hornets, who won their second in a row. The Pistons were lethargic early, scoring 13 points on 6-of-20 shooting in the first quarter and trailing 24-13 in the second. They weren't much better defensively, allowing Stojakovic to follow his own missed outside shot, grab the rebound and make an uncontested layup. But with Paul taking his customary rest at the start of the second quarter, the Hornets fell silent offensively and Detroit went on a 12-2 run to tie the score at 28. Hamilton hit two 3-pointers and had 12 points in the first seven minutes of the quarter.

Barkley not worried about brief upcoming jail time
Charles Barkley says he's not worried about serving a brief jail sentence after pleading guilty Monday to charges of driving drunk.

The 45-year-old former NBA star pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges stemming from his arrest in late December in Arizona. He's set to begin a five-day sentence March 21."I always knew I'd have to do time," he told The Associated Press on Wednesday. "It's not something I'm worried about."

The Hall of Famer must pay more than $2,000 in fines and attend an alcohol treatment program. Under Arizona law, he'll also be forced to install an ignition interlock device on his vehicles. "I'm not even thinking about it," he said of the jail sentence. "When it happens, it happens."

Pistons fall just short in eighth straight loss
Rasheed Wallace heated up, finally, but then he quickly crashed and burned and he took the Pistons with him. A classic Wallace meltdown in the fourth quarter -- he will be suspended for the game Friday in Orlando -- sent the New Orleans Hornets on their way to a wild 90-87 victory Wednesday. With Wallace out, the Pistons could not get a defensive rebound to secure a chance to steal a victory. Down by a point in the final 24 seconds, the Hornets grabbed two defensive rebounds, which led to two free throws by David West and a 90-87 lead with 6.7 seconds left. The Pistons, after a timeout, inserted Walter Herrmann, who played only three minutes in the second half. He missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer. David West had 30 points and 10 rebounds. Chris Paul had 20 points and 13 assists and Tyson Chandler had 10 points and 17 rebounds. The Hornets outrebounded the Pistons, 51-38. Richard Hamilton scored 24 to lead the Pistons, who also played most of the game without Allen Iverson.

The losing streak is now at eight. The last time the Pistons lost eight straight games was from Dec. 21 to Jan. 13, back in the 1994-95 season. They have now lost 17 of 22 since Jan. 10 and have fallen to seventh place in the East. Wallace had rallied the Pistons, scoring 12 points in the third quarter. He hit a 3-pointer to open the fourth that put the Pistons up, 67-65. Then the trouble started. He missed three straight shots. Then, with the score tied at 71-71, he had a defensive rebound slapped away by the Hornets' Sean Marks. The ball went to West, who scored the putback. Wallace argued that he was fouled and referee Bill Kennedy slapped him with a technical foul. That was No. 15 for Wallace. He got No. 16, which brings an automatic suspension, 27 seconds later. Kennedy called another foul on Wallace and coach Michael Curry subbed him out of the game.Wallace wanted to stay in the game and was angry when he went to the bench. Fans were on him good and he hurled a towel into the stands -- automatic technical foul. Before leaving, Wallace hurled another towel in the direction of Kennedy, which could cost him an additional game and certainly more money. The result of all that -- six straight points by the Hornets -- had the Pistons down, 78-71, with 7:32 left. But the Pistons kept fighting. They were without Allen Iverson (back) and Wallace, but four points by Hamilton and a 3-pointer by Tayshaun Prince had the Pistons within two with four minutes left.

After Chandler missed two free throws, Jason Maxiell, after running down two offensive rebounds, scored a layup to tie the game, 82-82, with 2:46 left. Paul scored four straight points, but Antonio McDyess countered with a three-point play, another possession saved by Maxiell. But they needed one more possession and they never got it. The Pistons were down, 20-11, when Iverson left the game eight minutes into the first quarter. His back, injured Tuesday night in Miami, stiffened and he didn't return. But a funny thing happened after Iverson left. The Pistons rallied. After scoring 13 points and shooting 30 percent in the first quarter, the Pistons scored 29 points and shot 57 percent in the second. They cut an 11-point deficit to one by the end of the half. Hamilton played as if he was unleashed. He had 14 points in the half. The Pistons also got a boost from Will Bynum, who had two steals and four assists and raised the team's intensity level. But if the Pistons were going to avoid a repeat of the loss in Miami, the defense would have to stiffen. The Hornets shot 50 percent in the first half. David West (12 points) and Peja Stojakovic (11) made 10 of 17 shots. Paul didn't have to shoot, content to distribute eight assists.

Pistons' rally falls short, extend losing streak to eight

Senior guard A.J. Price scored a career-high 36 points for the Huskies (26-2, 14-2 Big East), who broke Marquette's 17-game home winning streak.

Stanley Robinson added 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Huskies, who had a pronounced size advantage going into the game but ended up getting the best of Marquette on the perimeter, too.

Jerel McNeal scored 26 points for the Golden Eagles, who managed to stay in contention until the final few minutes despite losing James. Williams acknowledged that Marquette is a "different team" with James at the point, but said he wouldn't allow the players to use his injury as an excuse.

Damion James had 20 points and 11 rebounds for his fourth consecutive double-double and No. 25 Texas beat Texas Tech 87-81 on Wednesday night.

A.J. Abrams scored 24 points for the Longhorns (19-8, 8-5 Big 12), who have won four of their last five after a three-game losing streak.

Nick Okorie scored 24 points to lead Texas Tech (12-16, 2-11), which played without head coach Pat Knight, who was suspended by the Big 12 for one game after criticizing the officiating in the Red Raiders' previous loss. Tech has lost nine of its last 10 games.

No one was tougher than Delaney on Wednesday night. He scored 26 points, 17 in the second half, as the Hokies broke a three-game losing streak with an 80-77 victory over Clemson (No. 13 ESPN/USA Today, No. 12 AP).

Terrence Oglesby had 22 points, including six 3-pointers, for Clemson. However, he couldn't get free on the Tigers' final play and Stitt had to force up a wild shot that did not have a chance of going in.

Booker had 21 points and 13 rebounds, his 10th double-double of the season, and Rivers had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
