Kings out, A's in?

Johnson said he hasn't spoken with the A's this week, and a team spokesman said Wednesday that management was "regrouping" in the wake of the Fremont plan's demise. Still, Johnson - in his first State of the City speech - said that if the Kings leave, Sacramento could look down the road for a new major league franchise.

"If they leave for some strange reason, then we need to get somebody else in Sacramento," he said. "I don't care if it's the Oakland A's, I don't care if it's the Golden State Warriors. We have to have a franchise, a top-notch, world-class franchise in our city because it helps elevate the profile of our city."

After his speech, the mayor said he has "not personally had any conversations" with the A's about moving 80 miles up the freeway.

"What I was trying to say is we're not going to sit on our hands, we're going to explore every opportunity," he said. "I don't want to be a city where after something happens we say 'Oh, we should have reacted.' We're going to anticipate, we're going to call, we're going to do everything everybody else is.

"Not that we can deliver on everything, but we're going to put ourselves into a position and let people know we're interested."

I've been saying for years the A's would have a legit franchise if they moved to sac. Sell out games, and actually have money for players.

I don't really think the Maloofs want to move. They are continuing to rebuild they way I thought they would regardless of the economy. I think that prices and salaries are going to have to go down a bit to keep people in the seats in many NBA cities not just Sac. Everyone has the same problem some just have a little bigger problem than others. The Warriors are having trouble filling the seats here also. We will probably have to find a way to get the arena built though. If anyone can get it done it would be KJ.

The fact that the A's already would have a quality stadium built and would only have to update the staium would be a pretty significant deal. Do you think the Giants would sign off San Jose as their territory because this is the only way they get it built in San Jose?

posted on the A's board...anyone confirm?

Lew Wolff was flown up to Sacramento from Phoenix today for a tour of the multiple sites. He was escorted by the Mayor and one of the sites was the railyard area, supposedly a very large parcel of land there. Apparently this was reported on their local news in Sacramento

It would actually make alot of sense for the A's and Rivercats to swap locations, however the odds of it happening seem pretty slim.

I sure as hell wouldn't mind the A's moving here, but not at the expense of the Kings. The Rivercats are the most successful team (money-wise) in the minor league, so I think there's a market for baseball here and we sure as hell have perfect baseball weather. We already have a stadium and it was built to be expanded if necessary, and that could suffice until perhaps an even larger stadium can be built if needed. Wolff has said that he would like to keep the team in NorCal, and keeping them in the Bay Area is becoming more and more unlikely.

I don't see why we can't have two major sports franchises. Sports all year round would awesome. Just imagine, the World Series in Sacramento! That would put us in the national spotlight!

Ugh I can't stand baseball. How could anyone even think such a thought as a baseball team replacing the Kings!?

No matter what happens with the Kings, I think Sacramento should look at bringing the A's in. #1 we already have a stadium that can be upgraded. #2 The rivercats are the most profitable team in the minor leagues, showing that the A's could make money in Sacramento. #3 There is no way the the Gaints sign off on San Jose to the A's.

This is a baseball town! Even red dome (Napier) got this one right. He said if this town had to choose between baseball and the Kings it's a no brainer. The Kings would be gone tomorrow.

Absolutely this town is big enough for the Kings and A's. The A's would trade places with the Rivercats, and move into the expandable stadium down town (raley). Perfect baseball situation, and the kings would benefit too by moving to cal expo... everyone is a winner, especially the fans.

lol That's not what the polls from the Sac bee showed. And Napier is an idiot. Baseball is boring. Sac is a basketball city, but honestly this city isn't as small as everyone thinks. It's the 21st biggest market in America. Realistically in the future we could have 2 pro sports teams.

You will never replicate 2002 Arco Arena atmosphere with a baseball team. We have basketball fans.

No it ain't! This is a BASKETBALL town. Always has been, well since 1985 really. Baseball can work, but basketball is #1 in Sacramento, no question.

There are more people at RiverCat games than Kings games now a days.

Sacramento has had other baseball teams here before the Kings, and they all had some success in this city. Furthermore there are so many more "quality" amateur baseball and softball programs in this region as compared to basketball.

This is not a "basketball town." There isn't much hoops tradition. Matt Barnes is Sactown's finest. There aren't AAU teams up the wazzo. If we are talking hoops and Sacramento what can you say besides the Kings? If the Kings weren't good for over half this decade could you even say this is a basketball town?

If you want to qualify having a pro basketball team makes this a basketball town get in touch! Just because you don't like baseball doesn't mean baseball roots don't exist here.

Furthermore baseball tickets are cheaper!

I think you answered your own proposal there. Sure the Kings aren't selling tickets because they suck right now, but having relatively absurdly priced tickets definitely doesn't help. It's also worth noting that the arena regularly sold out with a crappy team back when the tickets weren't so damn expensive. That, beyond anything to me, is proof of what makes this a basketball town.

Also, I'd argue that that guy Kevin Johnson is Sactown's finest. Not sure what ever happened to him...but I guess he probably has no influence on what sport this town supports.
