Zaun out until June with broken hand
By Cathal Kelly
The bad is that catcher Gregg Zaun, who was struck by an Eric Hinske foul tip just above the thumb on his throwing hand Tuesday night, will be out for six to eight weeks.

Zaun will undergo surgery today to insert two screws into what the Jays are calling a "non-displaced fracture" in the hand. The screws will serve to stabilize the broken bone while the hand heals.

A young Jay's gift to a special coach

Mannie, a mental health worker from Anderson, Indiana, was in New York as the guest of Jays outfielder Adam Lind. The 23-year-old Lind had recently made a promise to his former coach in Babe Ruth ball that when he made it to the majors, he would fly him in so that he could see Yankee Stadium before it was knocked down.

Dark clouds follow Jays

Who could deny Gibbons his wry cynicism? He has seen his starting leftfielder, his ace closer, his slugging third baseman and now his No. 1 catcher all go on the disabled list in the first 20 games of the season.

A grand total of seven players have gone on the disabled list already this year, just one less than all of last season. Ninety-three man games have been lost to injury already, in just 20 games. Last year, over 162 games, they lost 318 games.

Zaun headed for surgery
By Ken Fidlin
Manager John Gibbons has elected to stay with his pitching rotation going forward after last night's rainout at Yankee Stadium. That means A.J. Burnett will pitch tonight against heralded rookie Phillip Hughes, who is making his major-league debut. Josh Towers will open a four-game series against Texas this weekend tomorrow, followed, in order, by Gustavo Chacin on Saturday, Tomo Ohka on Sunday and Roy Halladay on Monday.

Zaun out with fractured bone in his hand
By Jeff Blair
Catcher Gregg Zaun is expected to be out six to eight weeks after suffering a non-displaced fracture of a bone near the base of his right thumb, according to Toronto Blue Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi.

"We're not putting him on the 60-day disabled list because we think he will be back faster than that," Ricciardi said Wednesday, before the Blue Jays game at Yankee Stadium against the New York Yankees was postponed because of an unfavorable weather forecast.

Hughes prepares for first major league start
By Associated Press
So they've done everything they can to make things easier on Hughes, who is slated to become the youngest pitcher to make his big league debut with the Yankees since 18-year-old Jose Rijo on April 5, 1984. They optioned Colter Bean to triple-A Scranton-Wilkes Barre on Wednesday so Hughes could have a day to get used to his surroundings.

I said it was going to be a broken hand in yesterday's dailies....what an inordinate amount of bad luck to start the season.

it's a long season and things always seem to balance out - if we can stay in contention through these injuries, we're putting ourselves in great position to make a run - we still have enough offense to carry us (Zaun was struggling badly, Phillips may actually be an upgrade offsensively for now!). It'll be like trading for a starting catcher, getting a dominant closer, and getting a defensive upgrade in LF (while also getting another serviceable 4th outfielderi n Lind!).

We have already gained a lot - our bullpen is being forced to step-up in the absence of Ryan (atleast getting a lot more significant innings, pressure situations), our starters are being put to the test early as they can't depend on the bullpen, and the heart of our order is going to have to start swinging the bats again to pick up the slack in the batting order - the only thing i'm really concerned with is the pitch-calling from behind the plate - Halladay and the rest of the staff really like throwing to Zaun, who by all accounts calls a great game... if need be we should pick up a good defensive/pitcher's catcher (where's Quiroz or Cash now?)

I am convinced we would be better off with Ernie in the pads than Phillips.

omg... Andy Dominique the worst catcher i've ever seen in the majors - i'd rather take MATT LECROY over Dominique - i saw atleast two games where that fat BoSox reject started for us!!!! (probly his only two starts lol!) he can't hit, can't field, can't run.... the absolute worst player i've seen in the Jays uniform during Ricciardi's tenure (and there are many terrible ones)

Does anyone remember the 18-year-old Jose Rijo? I googled him and it looks as if he had a couple of good seasons with Cinci but not much. So does anyone remember if he had a lot of hype or anything?
