OT: Thunder/Joe Smith Reach Buyout Agreement

Post#1 » by Jammer » Mon Mar 2, 2009 4:43 am

RealGM is reporting that Oklahoma City's
Joe Smith has reached a buyout agreement,
and should he sign with Cleveland Wednesday morning,
could be in uniform Wednesday night.

As much as I was hoping the league (NBA)
would promote Ubuntu,
and as much as I disliked the Celtic trash talking and
excessive technical fouls early in the season,

I fret that the NBA marketing gurus
are heading toward a LeBron/Kobe showdown.

And that means the NBA refs,
who get a 1 hour session with a league representative before every game,
may have a hand in the ultimate outcome
(and by ultimate outcome I don't mean homecourt).

That's too bad because this team really needs Joe Smith.

The Cavs lose Wallace and gain Smith. We lose Cassell and POB to get Marbury and Moore. Who actually got better overall? Not hard to figure out as their defense took a big blow and our offense got better.
Who cares about homecourt at this point, there are many games left. The way I was brought up was a champion was the last one standing, it doesn't matter how you had to get there to be a champion. You want to be the best, beat the best!!!!!

Doesn't bother me too much---the Cavs can only play 5 guys at a time----they really didn't need him---our bench was cr@p---we definitely needed Moore and Stephon.

Thus far, these are the only other players who have been waived tonight,

Kings waive Gooden

New Jersey Nets waive veteran forward/centre Stromile Swift

Can't believe Moore gets written off already by you guys. He is a better defender than Smith and is much more athletic, which we need to switch on defense. Big Baby is stepping up in the PJ mode and Marbury will make up much more scoring than Posey did. We hit a bad stretch around x-mas and now Garnett is injured, and we start to worry after the pickups we got?

So much for a "surprise" free agent shaking loose

This is the only other waived player I could come up with using search engines. I'll keep looking...

The Refs and Sternâ„¢ rigged it so the Cavs could have a few extra days to get someone to fill in for Ben.

The rule is a player has to be WAIVED by March 1
to be eligible for the playoffs.

A player can join a team anytime up until the playoff rosters are set.

What would prevent BOS from buying out Pruitt (since Marbury's here), and offer the roster spot to Joe Smith?

It wouldn't cost too much, and he would be worth double to the Celtics, since you get his production, and CLE does not. Smith is a longtime friend of Garnett from his Minnesota days, and if he gives BOS a much better chance at a ring, I think he'd go to you.

Let me add that its highly unlikely Joe Smith is going to put CLE over the top, but with BOS already paying $80 mil to try to get a ring, adding a bit more for insurance seems like a smart play.

Celtics don't need Joe Smith, they need a backup SF.

Yes, but CLE needs a PF badly, and you may be able to prevent that.

Smith certainly won't be worth less to your team than Pruitt now, especially with KG out and home court advantage in doubt.

Joe Smith is not and never was the difference between the Celtics and the Larry O'Brien Trophy.

I agree. The way people talk about Joe Smith in this forum you would think he was Larry Bird.

Yeah, I was talking about him like he was Larry Bird.

This is about insurance. How important is home court advantage? CLE is 26-1 at home this year. Leaving that hole at PF may only cost them a game or two, but that game or two could be the difference between reaching the finals or not. BOS is a better team, but the gap isn't so great that they couldn't use home court advantage.

I think you guys aren't looking at the big picture strategically.

We beat you with Joe Smith last year, it will be no different this year.
