Lots of bigs got waived today

Post#1 » by evildallas » Mon Mar 2, 2009 6:12 am

Joe Smith (rumored to Cleveland)
Drew Gooden (rumored to San Antonio)
Adonal Foyle (rumored to Orlando, but a waiting period would make him ineligible for the playoffs).
Stromile Swift

Not great pickings, but Foyle or Swift might block a few shots or log a few rebounds. We have some room before we have to pay luxury tax. Any chance that any of them would like to help shore up our front line depth? Are they any better than Solomon Jones? Would Woodson even play one of them if signed?

What do you think?

Waive Gardner and sign Swift. Swift wouldn't be in the rotation but maybe he wouldn't foul everything that moved in his limited minutes like Solo.

I'd be surprised to see anyone other than the Hornets sign Swift. If I were Sund, I'd be tempted by Foyle...

That said, it'd likely be Hunter who is waived. Gardner looked like he'd be worth hanging onto based on his Anaheim games.

Why was Gooden waived? I always thought he was a very solid big man in this league. I personally wouldn't mind any of those players actually. Foyle is a bit old and not that good of a defensive big man, but at least he can rebound.

I guess Gooden was waived to save them almost $2M. I hope you guys some more depth, the Hawks are a fun team to watch.

It should be considered cheating if the Hawks sign any of these guys

:D

(on a more somber note, who wants to bet that our broke owners fork out more money voluntarily to help the team???)

Stephen A. Smith said on ESPN First Take that ownership squabbles and financial trouble was why we didn't trade for Chris Kaman at the deadline. However, it was apparent that he had no insight to the situation based on the language he used. His points had all the detail of someone who scanned the headlines of stories concerning Hawks ownership.

Trading for a 3 year salary commitment is a lot bigger than half a million for a stretch run to help maintain 1st round home court and get further in the playoffs. If we make it into the second round it would be a worthwhile investment.

I'd take anyone on the list but Stromile Swift.

I have wanted Gooden for a couple of years to give us some depth in the front court. Now that he can be brought in on the cheap, I really would like to see him here for the stretch run.
He is the only one to me out of that bunch who could help longer than 10 minutes in a game.

And for wanting to trade for Kaman? Man, like I said when Dunleavy was rumored to be coming here years ago, don't even consider it. You will be stuck with a bad long term deal.
For what the Clippers have at any position, I would only take a Gordon or Camby. You can have the rest.

Stephen A. Smith brought it up, not me. I tend to agree that with his health issues he's a bad contract. Trading for him would have put a crimp in signing Marvin and/or Bibby for sure.

Stromile Swift is expected to take a physical and sign a contract with the Suns in Miami on Wednesday.
