here is the latest from wNg. this guy is not a beat writter, he actually works with the cavs organization somehow and has always been right on the money.
"OK, let me just jump in here, just to fill everyone in on where things stand as I see them right now. And explain how this all came to be, and things that can happen along the way.
Joe Smith being bought out, was born a long long time ago in the mind of Danny Ferry. It's been an option we were thinking we could utilize at any moment, and was our crutch even as we approached the trade deadline.
When Ben went down with his injury, it became option 1, that we wanted to get taken care of. Our people contacted Dan Fegan, and Dan Fegan ...and we, hammered out buyout details in concert with OKC, so that Joe Smith felt as comfortable as possible asking for, and going through with this process that would land him in Cleveland.
Now, this IS a competitive league, and teams do have the ability to step in and mess with pre-arranged plans if they want to.
As of last night, our players hadn't heard from Joe personally, yet ...and to a few that had become a concern, but, today Joe did make contact with a couple players on the team, and it looks as though all systems are go for his arrival here. That was this AM.
The writiers that write what they write, I don't know where they get their stuff, or if they just make it up along the way. It's been proven that SAS does just make stuff up alot, if not most of the time.
Now, all the prearranged stuff in the world doesn't stop teams from trying to mess with another teams plans along the way ...they are all seeking the same championship, and want it juist as bad as us.
Is it 100% Joe Smith ends up here ...of course not. Not until he signs, is it absolutely a done deal. I've explained the buyout plan was bargained between OKC, Joe Smith and his reps, and the Cavaliers.
Now, we may have a team come in an try to up the verbal that we have arranged already. But, here's the thing ...Dan Fegan has been working in good faith with us through this whole process. If other teams even HAVE come forward and tried to get in on this action, I feel he would come back to us and make sure that we had the opportunity to match whatever is out there from an opposing team. That being said, I can't see us ..with what we have available to offer, not doing what it would take to make sure he ends up coming here.
I predict we will see him in Clevenad tomorrow night ...hopefully in uniform.
I've been in the business ,long enough to know nothing is ever 100% until the signature is on the paper. I've explained in detail exactly how this has all gone down ..I 've hidden nothjing from you guys. You understand the situation as well as I do right now.
Let's hope that the pre-arranged plans don't get mesed with by anyone, but even if they do ..I think we'll have that covered as well. I think Fegan has enough riding on his improved relationship with the Cavs that he won't pull anything dirty on us.
That's how I read it"
i honestly think if you guys want to go after someone else, you should try goin after PJ, he was huge for you last year, you would not have made it out of the 2nd round without his clutch jumpers late in that 4h

Re: SAS: Joe Smith to Boston?!?!?!
We have a full roster, we aren't in need of someone else, most of the talk around here is based on the fact the Joe Smith has made it clear to some in the media that he wanted to come to Boston.
I have little reason to buy anything this W&G dude is selling he was selling the exact same stuff that heathmac was selling about Amare and done deals before, about talks that never took place. There is no reason for the Cavs to be involved with OKC in their buyout of Joe Smith. Obviously Joe might want to make sure he has a place to land and teams will let agents contact teams and make sure there is interest.
It makes perfect sense for Joe to go to CLE, if they really want him, I think his concern as with any player in his situation, is being taken off the market simply so he can't help the competition.
Ainge decided he wasn't going to get left at the altar if Joe and his people call tomorrow morning and say this is were he wants to be can you clear a spot, I think we can.

No, W&G actually never said the same things "heathmalc" said in regards to Amare. He said the Cavs had made an offer and were in serious discussions with Kerr, all of which was true. Heath is the guy who said he heard it was a done deal at a Phx sports bar. Completely different.
W&G is an extremely legit source, and he posted about Joe Smith's buy-out about 5 hours before any other article confirmed it. He also broke last years big trade, he broke us drafting JJ Hickson, and he hinted at the Mo Williams trade.
The reason the Cavs were involved, was because Joe didn't want a buy-out if he was just going to be an insurance policy, with Ben Wallace's injury, that opened up a huge role for Joe Smith in Cleveland, the the Cavs were part of the process to assure Joe he would recoup all of the money he'd be leaving on the table at OKC(he left every dollar that was owed to him in OKC, if he were to sign with you guys...he's essentially be losing a million dollars), and that he'd have a very nice role on the Cavs.
I'm also pretty sure that Dan Fegan doesn't want to piss the Cavs off by going behind our backs, because he's also Anderson Varejao's agent who's likely due for a new contract this summer, and with the economy being as bad as it is, Andy might not be able to get paid well around the league, and the Cavs are the only team that values him enough to pay him anymore than the full MLE.

You'd figure if anyone knew not to test the tampering rules it'd be Smith, guess not.

It's not tampering, we're allowed to talk to agents. Players are allowed to talk to other players. Our FP can't talk to OKC or Joe directly though, which we didn't, just Mr. Fegan.
And if the league isn't investigating the Cassell trade+Mikki Moore release "coincidence" as tampering, then they won't investigate the Joe Smith situation either.

billfromBoston wrote:I highly doubt Smith is coming here, but it should be noted that Smith can play the 3, which would likely be his primary role behind Pierce on a nightly basis...the team wouldn't sign Moore and then give his job to another - that's bad PR and would cost them in the long run...
I have been thinking that Moore is closer to a backup center more than backup PF. Joe Smith would be primarily the backup PF behind KG and he'd split time at PF and C along with BBD, Powe and Moore.
But either way, if we get Joe, we'll have a tremendously DEEP bench with alot of capable bigs. Imagine this: KG, Perk, Joe, Powe, BBD, and Moore. Thats a nice group of bigs and plenty of fouls to go around between Perk, Powe, BBD and Moore.

That is funny... cause we all know money is the true test of character and validity. AIG just got paid 30 Billion from the Government that's more than probably this entire board combined makes in a year.
AIG is legit.

CLEVELAND -- Joe Smith is about to become a Cavalier, again.

done deal
The Cavs and the veteran 6-foot-10 forward agreed to terms on a one-year contract Tuesday night. He is expected to sign the deal once he clears waivers Wednesday morning and should be able to join the team by Friday's game at Boston.
"After careful consideration of his options, Joe has decided that the Cavs are the best fit," Smith's agent, Dan Fegan, said.
Smith was contracted by several teams after getting a buyout from the Oklahoma City Thunder on Sunday. He averaged 6.1 points and 4.5 rebounds in 39 games with the Thunder this season. He played 27 games plus the playoffs with the Cavs last season.
