Kurt Rambis as a head coach?

what is everyone's thoughts on Kurt Rambis as a head coach? would he be a good or even a great one? a disciple of phil jackson (hard workig, loose style, triangle offense, "zeniness", etc...), will he wait for phil to retire and hopefully take over the lakers? might he be sought this offseason? where would he fit best?

I'd prefer him right where he is -- as an assistant. I'm sure he's improved since that short stint after Harris was fired -- you know, the one where Rodman was telling him when to take timeouts and what plays to call -- but I still don't think he has what it takes. Isn't he responsible for our teams defense which happens to suck? I'll pass.

Kurt sucked when he was the Lakers coach during the Lockout season, plus have you guys ever heard his interviews on the local sport shows ? He couldn't motivate a fly to sit on horse dookey, I swear I've never heard him say one encouraging thing about the team EVER. I agree with semi, B.Scott is our next man and I'm on record on this board saying as much.

You know, I haven't seen his interviews since I live in Austin and only see what NBA League Pass shows, but it makes perfect sense that he can't motivate anyone. That explains why our guys are never motivated to play defense for more than a quarter or two per game. I think Byron Scott would fix that. This guy is a damn winner as both a player and a coach. He turned the Nets around and had them in consecutive NBA Finals (2nd, 3rd season as coach -- they were the #1 defensive team in the league when we swept them... lol) and he turned around the Hornets (after dealing with crap talent and tons of injuries) and damn near had them in the Conference Finals last season.

Rambis is lucky to be on the Staff.. I say lay him off and cut costs..

Scott is overrated.. there is one common factor in both at NJ and Hornets .. great point gaurds that had a hand in success.. Scott does not know coaching.. Ask Rod Thorn.. the master GM that guy would surely have kept him if he was that good..

I would rather we bring in Jeff Van Gundy..

Fact is Phil is still around, given no indication he will retire.. Suggestion of Rambis is garbage considering he was demoted once..

kobe and pretty much everyone now has been grandfathered into the triangle

when things arent broke, why fix it?

phil can retire all he wants, but the triangle stays, and that pretty much limits it to shaw/rambis

If we can't win a championship with Kobe/Gasol/Bynum (not to mention a veteran Fisher and Odom to go along with a solid bench), then something is very much broken. Kind of like how we were underachieving with Del Harris and Kurt Rambis running the show.

If a guy like Byron Scott comes in, I see no reason why we can't continue to run the triangle as long as we have knowledgeable assistants who know the system. As mentioned, we still have Shaw and Rambis on the bench to help out until Scott becomes familiar enough with the system. By that time I wonder how much it will really matter seeing as how we'll have a veteran squad that knows the offense inside and out. A monkey should be able to coach this team, at least on the offensive end.

What I like about Scott is that I think he will bring discipline to this team and improve us defensively, and to be honest, I'm willing to sacrifice some offense to become a better defensive team because would make us practically unstoppable.

Anyway, here's some interesting quotes from Scott:

Scott finished the last of his 14-year career playing for the Lakers in 1996-97, after spending three years away with two other teams. Kobe Bryant and Derek Fisher were rookies. That makes the Lakers’ job all the more interesting for Scott.

“I played with them, so yeah, I can never sit and tell you, ‘No, I’ll never think about that,’ ” Scott said. “Yeah, I thought about it, a bunch of times.”
