How is this team ever gonna contend?

Post#1 » by ATL DirtyBird » Sun Mar 8, 2009 2:36 am

OK so we all seem to think that Al is the future of our franchise. So what are we gonna do? Im not ready to give up on Marvin, as a matter of fact im willing to pay him some money bc I think he could he special, and Josh Smith just got paid big bucks and I doubt management would ever be willing to trade him after that big contract. So how are we ever gonna contend for a championship with those 3 players, who are very good and have a lot of potential? We are a terrible rebounding team and when we play teams that have a solid big we get beasted. We could never contend with Al has our center and he will never reach his potential if he is stuck at center. Josh cant play the 3 until he gets a jumpshot or obtains the ability to dribble. Someone wanna tell me what were gonna do?
Is it to much to ask for a team that plays hard and cares? Seems so.

You want the truth? Brace yourself. We will never contend for a championship until the team gets sold to someone with deep pockets. The ASG will never spend the money necessary to bring in a superstar and win it all. It starts from the top. Maybe Josh will pull his head out of his ass and become the player he could be, and maybe Al will maximize his potential, and maybe Marvin will maximize his potential, and maybe Joe will start acting like a man and become a leader. If by some miracle all that happens, we're still not going to ever beat a team with a superstar like Dwight Howard, Chris Paul, KG, Lebron, Kobe or Tim Duncan. You need a superstar to win it all and these owners will never spend the money for a superstar. That Detroit team from '04 is probably the only team in the past 40 years to win without a superstar. And clearly, no one on this roster is even close to being a superstar.

We had two chances to contend - the year before the Dwight Howard draft when we refused to tank and ended up with Josh Childress, and the Chris Paul draft. And we blew them both. We could dump all our salary and try to lure a superstar in 2010, but this franchise is far too stupid to do that. And far too cheap to spend the money even if we had it in 2010.

^^^ You dont think with all the talent and athletiscism on this team we couldnt contend even without that coveted superstar? BC I have that feeling in my gut we could, especially if we were well coached!

In the last 30 seasons, a team without a superstar has won the championship ONE TIME. So yeah, I guess it's possible. But it's highly improbable. I think our best best is to try and trade for Stoudemire or Bosh and hope that one of them blossoms into a superstar. This current core has zero chance of winning a championship, regardless of who's coaching them. Red Auerbach could maybe get them to the conference finals, but that's probably the ceiling.

I'd hope it would be Josh Smith, but he's almost untradeable at this point. Who wants a locker-room cancer with a long expensive contract these days? Anyone??? Anyone??? Any takers??? Please???

Our best bet for getting rid of Josh is a straight salary dump like the Nugs did with Camby, and I don't think anyone here wants to just give him away for nothing. We're gonna have to just hope he grows up and starts acting like a man some day.
