I REALLY wanted Foye to hit that three. Would that have been our first true game winner of the season? That would have been def.

Well that's true, but the wolves have a weak 1-4 and a strong 5-9. Or look at it this way:

A) good starter:

Al Jefferson

B) starter:


C) Guys you'd rather have as a sixth man:

Miller, Foye, Love, Gomes

D) Bench

Telfair, Williams, Carney, Brown,

E) Deep bench

Ollie, Cardinal, Smith, Madsen, Collins


Now I imagine that's a pretty pessimistic way of assigning players, so I would be curious how others would break down the wolves. By way of comparison, let's just zoom to the top and look at the Celtics:

A) good starter:

Garnett, R. Allen, P. Pierce

B) starter:

Rajon Rondo, Stephon Marbury

C) Guys you'd rather have as a sixth man:

Eddie House, Kendrick Perkins

D) Bench

Glen Davis, Mikki Moore, Tony Allen,

E) Deep bench

J. R. Giddens (?), Gabe Pruitt (?), Brian Scalabrine, Bill Walker


Well, I'm not sure I've even convinced even myself of anything here (other than my talent scouting skills are suspect). I guess my point is that while it's not crazy for the wolves to choose to start any of the guys they are starting, it's just crazy to have to start all of them at the same time. Which is not too insightful, I've basically argued that a lottery team is not as good as a play-off team. Genius!

The way I see it, we have six of the 8-9 man group: Al, Love, Gomes, Miller, Brewer, and Foye (this is barring any trades, of course). So we need 2-3 more starter-quality guys. Depending on who the new guys are, probably 3-4 of our current group will be coming off the bench when we are at full strength. So...I guess I agree with you.

But look at it from the other side - a year ago the Wolves had Greg Buckner, Michael Doleac, Theo Ratliff, Marco Jaric, Kirk Snyder and Antoine Walker on their roster. That's the glass half full part, they've gotten rid of an awful lot of junk on this roster, dumping guys who had no future with the Wolves.

I'd say the Wolves need two more quality starters and a star to be a contending team. It's that star that's the tough one. Jefferson's an alpha dog, but I think Foye and Love will only be good to very good players, not all-star types.

lots of our guys might move up a group if they were next to KG, Lebron, Duncan etc. Foye and McCants were future stars when KG was here. Perkins definitely jumped up a notch once Allen and KG came in, Rondo probably jumped up 2 notches.
