It just really sucks man. It's a terribly hard pill to swallow considering it's the same exact script as last year.

Yeah, it stings, no doubt. I'm just not ready to thrown in the towel. We've been playing some good, fundamentally sound basketball late this season. It hasn't always ended in wins but I like the fact that we can stick with an elite team without a good game from our best players.

Just think about it....if Vasquez plays more than 20 minutes, we beat Duke.

If Hayes knocks down a three or if Vasquez isn't ice cold, we win this one easily.

I like the fact that we're even in these games. A lot of people probably didn't even think we'd be competitive tonight.

You can have my towel cause I think I may have tossed it after tonight, hahaha. Out of any team I'm a fan of Maryland basketball just repeatedly rips my heart out and stomps on it. I was a freshman in 2004-2005; a season after we had won the ACC tournament and a few seasons after we had some sustained success. I get into the school and what happens? The teams goes to s***. Other than my junior year when Gist and Boom got us to the second round only to lose to crappy Butler I've been tortured by several years of mediocrity and just plain suckyness. I was really hoping that tonight they could break away from that pattern but nope...same old same old. I hope they prove me wrong on Saturday but I just don't see them pulling it off.

Yeah. The Garrison, Mike Jones years were full of empty promise. The good news is that we have basically everyone coming back next year (minus Neal) AND the addition of some of the top prospects, including a big man who we desperately need.

Even if we come up short this year (which I don't think we will), we're going to be a strong team next season (we're talking ranked material...maybe top-15....or better).

I don't know why you guys are mad. This is easily Gary's least talented team in years. They have the worst talent-level in the ACC. It's a miracle that they are even in NCAA contention.

It was a miracle that MD nearly won against Wake - with Vasquez and Hayes missing open 3's. Have you ever seen a longer college frontcourt than Wakes? With Woods in there, they're longer than most NBA teams. Great execution by Maryland on the whole - they just didn't make some shots they should have made. MD needs to win at VA and the 1st round of the ACC tournament to get into the NCAA tournament.

well, number 1, my name is P'Oed

but honestly, how could you be a Maryland fan and NOT get mad at what went down last night? Another game that was in our favor coming down the stretch that we blew by not hitting wide open shots. This makes 2 years in a row where we're left for dead, come back and give everyone hope by racking up amazing wins and drop the ball right at the end. If this team could manage to beat 2 top 5 teams this year and make it pretty damn close with 2 other top 10 teams then there has to be some talent somewhere dude. I don't care what ESPN tells me about their "talent level"...they had a chance to get it done and they didn't. Now they make things 5 times harder for themselves.

Yup, another game we should have won. I count Morgan st, miami, bc, possibly fl st, duke, and now Wake all as games we should have won now. I'm not saying we were the better team but we just didn't execute or didn't get the calls down the stretch.
Gary out-coached Dino so hard last night but we just weren't aggressive enough throughout the game. Way too much passing around the outside and not enough penetration. THAT is why we got only 2 FT attempts. Once again we miss out on "home court refs" but we still should have won.

One bit of second guessing I will do is note how at the under 4, Gary stuck with Hayes who had just missed 2 shots, and he also put Bowie back in even though he was ineffective throughout. Hayes is pretty useless if he isn't hitting and the zone we were playing made bowie's defense unnecessary. Either should have been replaced by Tucker who played about 2 minutes in the 2nd half where he was the only one to drive against the zone and immediately dished to neal for an open 3, then had that pretty steal and layup combo on Defense. Even Mosley would have been a better option over bowie since we needed some extra rebounding.

Either way, we are still playing our best basketball at the right time. I foresee a gutsy win at UVA and then we take down NC State in the tourney and upset Duke for a little sweet revenge :)

I called it but that definitely didn't make it hurt any less. I just don't understand this team anymore. Virginia turns the ball over multiple times while shooting 3-16 in the first half, you manage to get a 13-point lead (should've been up even more) and then you blow the lead like it was nothing at all? This is why I was so upset after we lost to Wake. I was absolutely positive that that was our last chance and we blew it with the game in our hands. Just thinking about how much the Virginia fans must've enjoyed spoiling our damn season for the second year in a row makes me physically ill. Maryland can't do this to their fans anymore...they just can't. It's enough already.

If the school doesn't do something drastic then this broken record will continue to skip for years to come. If you can play with the big boys then you can manage to beat sorry teams like Virginia. Something is clearly wrong with the mentality, preparation and motivation this team possesses. I don't see how are fans can chant "Gary, Gary, Gary!" anymore because we've been continually dragged through the mud.

You knew this was going to happen. Maryland needs to win 3 games in the ACC Tournament to get in. Winning today wasn't going put them in anyway b/c I believed they need to win at least a game or two in the tournament.

Now with this loss, they probably need to go to the semis or better.

I read on another website that Cunningham said Vasquez was going pro.

Yes we did. Thanks. Almost made our season in the process (along with the win over VT).

We shot poorly (for the past two games, really) and couldn't hit a 3 to save our lives but I maintain that we didn't play a poor game. You just don't expect Diane, who averages about 4 points per game and hits, what, 20% of his 3's, to go for 20+ points and shoot around 60-70% from the field. Virginia also was scorching from the free throw line, another unexpected plot twist.

Not saying that we shouldn't have lost but it's not like EVERYTHING was Maryland's fault.

Also, those using this game as reasoning for firing Gary Williams - NO. He's a lousy recruiter, but make me a comprehensive list of coaches who could take THIS team to a respectable record and possibly make the tournament. I sure as hell bet that that list isn't very long.

Gary had us playing lockdown defense every game with an offense that is slightly better than what it should be, considering the roster.

Congrats go out to the Lady Terps and Brenda Friese. They won the ACC Tourney (as well as finishing first in the regular season). First Tourney championship for the Lady Terps in 20 years.

Good to see that at least one coach in the area and one team is getting it done.

I really wish I cared about women's basketball - not to mention men's soccer and lacrosse. MD does great in those sports, and that's great, but it just doesn't do anything for me. And it's all about me!!!

UMD's women's team is actually decent to watch. They're about as non-women's-college-basketball as it gets.

They are #1 in scoring and have two of the top players in the country. Ever since they won the title two years ago (or was it three?), I've actually watched a few of their games.

Personally, I love womens basketball.

I think the key is not to compare it to the mens game.

And honestly, I don't see how any basketball fan can watch UMD and not enjoy thier style of play.

Congrats to the Lady Terps!

On top of that Coleman and Tolliver aren't bad to look at, either. Marah Strickland is also cute.

I started following the Lady Terps closely the year they won the NCAA title. I predicted in November of that season that they'd win it all. IMO the best prediction I ever made, mens NCAA and NBA ball included. (Better than Millsap would be a stud, etc.) I saw it coming with the impact of Brenda Freise arrival, her recruiting, and her coaching. That team had it all.

This team's maximized their talent but will only go as far as Tolliver's jumper will take them. This NCAAs I just HOPE they can make the Final Four. They don't play good enough defense to win it all. I'm thinking they might go down in Sweet 16 or Elite 8, because they don't have the inside game they had with Langhorne and Harper.

Coleman's their best player IMO by far, BTW. Tolliver got ACC POY and set all kinds of records with assists and threes, and is a leader. But Coleman's just a well rounded player and IMO will be a star in the WNBA.

I think this could be Gary's last ACC game.
