Re: Are Stan And Jeff Van Gundy Complete Egomanicacs?
Spanoulis would have gotten PT in his 2nd season if he worked hard and earned JVG's respect his rookie season. JVG like Poppovich doesn't like to play rookies, no matter what.
Instead, he sulked and complained and that immediately threw JVG off, even so, I believe he could have made up for it by coming back next season but he instead demanded to get bought out and come back to Greece.

Ever thought that those European were incompetent, and that Camby was young and immature?
I'm glad he's gone. Before he was a scrub, he was a whiny bitch.

So the article which quotes basketball managers saying otherwise doesn't count? The opinion of GMs does not count, only Van Gundy's opinion? Notice people saying Weis could have been a decent role player and an asset and that Spanoulis was good? Notice Van Gundy HIMSELF saying Spanoulis was good, talented and would "play many years in the NBA"? That is before Van Gundy decided to turn on him for whatever petty reason. Besides that the point is, is it acceptable to treat people like that? Are you saying it is?

Every successful NBA head coach has a large ego. You have to demand respect and get star players/veterans to follow their lead. A large part of Phil's reputation as a manager of egos is due to the fact that his ego/personality is strong enough to command respect from even the largest stars. Pop, Riley, Sloan, etc... are the same.

Again what about what he did to his former boss in the Knicks and to Camby? They are not "Euros". I may be wrong on this, but didn't he also refuse to let Bonzi wells join the Rockets right before the playoffs started?
Bonzi got a chance, but was grossly out of shape and a locker-room cancer.
Also, interesting stat: of your 38 posts on this forum, six are in this thread. Think about that for a moment.

Re: Are Stan And Jeff Van Gundy Complete Egomanicacs?
Shaq blames SVG for him not getting a ring in 04-05 which eventually lead to SVG "resigning". Wade's injury vs Pistons is probably more to blame...or Damon Jones stupid turn over at the end of ECF game 7. What's important is that it wasn't Shaq's fault. It never is.

I'm not sure that Phil has a rep of making players cry.

Enough said. Thumbs down for JVG.

In similar situation with JVG was involved Steve Francis, but I can't blame JVG, it was more about tactics.
Kirk Snyder:
Snyder had been placed on the Rockets' inactive list for Friday's game with New Jersey after having a disagreement with the head coach in practice. (...) They didn't officially hug and exchange gifts, but all is well again in the Kirk Snyder-Jeff Van Gundy relationship.

Honestly, I can't blame JVG here.

The problem with JVG isn't that he's an egomaniac. He is but than they all are egomaniacs. His problem is that he is one of the two or three worst coaches at coaching an offense of the last 20 years.

Of course JVG hates Euros. He was under Pat Riley for many years, and Pat Riley hates Euros.

There's no reason for a coach to act like that to someone he should know is going to have communication issues.
If half those stories are true I've never really known what kind of guy JVG is

Weis had problems with English, not Spanoulis. He's just a diva.

Re: Are Stan And Jeff Van Gundy Complete Egomanicacs?
None of those players amounted to anything in the NBA. And of course he was going to talk his own players up and say that they will be good, because you are never supposed to devalue your own players. That would just be stupid for the franchise. The only time you do it is when the player needs extra motivation and you need to keep him.
JVG is a very nice guy who will go through hoops for you if you show him respect and don't cross him. I do think there is something to the Camby situation.
We should all commend Jeff for standing up to Stern and the officials on the Yao Ming Referee controversy that didn't get nearly enough play. Refs were told to specifically call Yao Ming differently than others. That's an outrage and I am glad he spoke up about it. HIs wallet isn't.

I'm a little confused at this logic. How could you amount to anything in the NBA if your coach never lets you play and even tells you to get the hell out and on a plane? Doesn't really make much sense the logic "they never amounted to anything" when the whole issue was JVG going out of his way to make sure they didn't get a chance.

Somehow I think if Vescey completely lied and made up those stories that JVG could and would sue him. I don't think they can outright print lies about what he said to players and outright make up things that people said to the paper about what JVG told them. I mean the players then would also be able to sue for things being attributed to them that were also made up.
So that explanation doesn't add up.
