Hi everyone,
I'm a Celtics fan living in Memphis (transplanted New Englander). I'm not trolling, I just want to say I hope it is a good game (hopefully free from injury) and best of luck. I love the Grizz and follow them when the C's are not playing.

A couple other points:

1) The C's record is actually 49-16, although I'll take 50-13.

2) Here are some more ties between the two teams (hat tip to FLCeltsFan over at Celtics Blog).

Rudy Gay and Ray Allen are former UConn Huskies
Darrell Arthur and Paul Pierce are former Kansas Jayhawks
OJ Mayo, Gabe Pruitt, and Brian Scalabrine are all former USC Trojans
OJ Mayo and Bill Walker were teammates at Huntington High School
Kendrick Perkins was drafted by the Grizzlies in the 2003 draft and then traded to the Celtics in a draft day deal.
Kendrick Perkins would have attended the University of Memphis if he didn't enter the draft directly from high school
Darius Miles played for the Celtics during the preseason
Chris Mihm played for the Celtics in the '03-04 season

Best of luck.

Last game was forgetable to say the least. This game has potential blowout all over it.

Celts beat the Grizz 102-92. Leon Powe put about 30pts and 9rebs of problems on the Grizz frontcourt. Ray Allen had 22pts in the win. Rudy Gay led the Grizzlies with 26pts and Marc Gasol grabbed 14rebs in the loss.

Powe is a big man I argued that we should have picked or traded for when he was drafted. He would have been a welcomed addition to our frontcourt at the time.

Powe is an unrestricted free agent this summer. You have to wonder how he would do as a starter instead of being a bench player behind Garnett. He definitely adds an ingredient of toughness and energy.

If Jordan Hill is gone by the time the Grizzlies pick, and Greg Monroe goes back to Georgetown, would it make sense to go with the best player available theme and go after someone like Powe in free agency?

I would say so. ^

Powe is a lot tougher than Monroe at this stage but certainly has a more limited upside imo. Only thing is he might get a bit overpaid.

I'm not so sure about that. From what I've read the Celtics are going to be above $72mil in salary for next season before they even begin to think about re-signing players. Plus there's the draft, where they'll have to sign their pick.

I think there's a few veteran power forwards who will be free agenst that would sign for the MLE just to have a chance at a championship. If a team like Memphis offered up a deal slightly above that, say averaging around $7mil, would Boston offer more if they knew they could get a veteran backup for 3 years for a contract of both less money and years tied up?

And doesn't it stand to reason that Powe might be more willing to sign a deal if he knew he could be a starter in the NBA?

Don't get me wrong, I know the Grizzlies first choice would be to draft a power forward to save money, plus Powe doesn't have the upside a Hill or Monroe would, but if they can't get a good one Powe would give them inside toughness, and playoff experience, which Memphis sorely lacks. From what I've seen of him he's a good backside help defender which could help out Gasol next season.

Heck, Boston may even go as far as a sign and trade straight across to get backup at both center and power forward with an expiring contract in Darko Milicic. They cover their backup at two positions for a short term deal.

Gasol should command more playing time next season and a cheaper veteran backup could be had for much less than Milicic.

I'm just throwing out random thoughts as you can tell. But just getting James Harden to make it a Mayo, Harden, Conley backcourt trio, with Powe and let's say a Joey Graham added to the mix up front, plus their other two draft picks, ups the talent level and toughness a fair bit and gives more and better depth.
