best chase down blocker?

Post#1 » by 3peat » Wed Mar 18, 2009 4:32 am

Lebrons block tonight against alston got me thinking. Lebrons avg'ing 1.3 blocks this season and about 1 of that is from chase down blocks.
I have never seen a defender actually wait for the penitrator to get in the lane to think hes got a layup then just come out of no where and swat it.

is Lebron the best chase down blocker ever? if not who is?

I would guess that Dwyane Wade has a substantial number of these... Tayshaun Prince is another guy who springs to mind.

Gerald Wallace is probably one of the best. Dude comes out of nowhere.

Nic Batum is making quite a name for himself in this department, seems like he does this at least once per game in limited minutes.

Wade averages more blocks than LeBron but I don't remember reading a stat about how many are chase-downs, but I wouldn't be surprised if Wade has:

Everytime I see Lebron block a shot on the backboard I wonder if goltending should be called.

If ball hits the glass, its automatic goltending. Lebron gets REALLY close sometimes and I wonder why there havent been any whistles. Its a hard thing to judge in regular speed.

if "chase down" in this case means catching players going in for a break-away layin/dunk and blocking it, then right now Lebron might be the best.

Josh Smith is great at blocking shots from behind and the weakside, but I don't think he stands out in 'chase-down' blocks. Nic Batum has already been mentioned, he seems to have a knack for it.

if we're talking about all time greats in that category, then I'd say it is a 3-way tie between Bobby Jones, Larry Nance, and Jerome Kersey

Dr. J was also good that getting those blocks.

The cavs announcers claim LeBron is leading the league. I'm not sure if the stat is actually tracked, though.

Kirilenko could be, like he used to be, but he won't.

Bill Russell saved an entire NBA finals with a chase-down block in 1957. I think HE deserves mention.

Presently....I think Lebron.

honesltly they could rename the block a "russell" and I would be completely OK with it.

I watch more cavaliers basketball than I do any other team so I am biased, but I will say this...

There is no such thing as an easy fast break lay up against the cavs.... LeBron could be on the baseline when you are at half court, and he will find a way to pin your shot against the backboard...

I've never had that feeling as a Cavs fan... I'm just so glad this dude is on my team... so pumped to get to watch the guy every night regardless
