OT: Is it possible to block individual posters?

Post#1 » by Hemingway » Wed Mar 18, 2009 4:46 pm

If you are routinely getting fed up with the posts of a particular poster can you block him? I am pretty sure you can but I don't know how. Also, if I do, will it make threads he posts in not make sense to me anymore? What happens when people quote him to respond to his comments?

It seems like every so often we get someone who really takes the fun out of these boards. I think it happens when someone crosses some line in their posts. When they no longer are stating their point of view but have created a sort of character just to get a rise out of people. Its like an unfunny virsion of Steven Colbert.

Yes you can, there should be an "ignore" button by the poster's post...if you press it you will not see their posts nor will they see yours...

edit: Well there USED to be an ignore button...
It's still 17 to 11!!!!

Go to your user control panel and manage friends/foes, then add the user names of the people that you want to block.

Any poster on your ignore list won't show anything besides his or her user name stating that you've this particular poster ignored. However, you can click and show the message if you like. It doesn't remove them once you've added them. If not, the only way you'll see what this poster has written is if he or she are quoted in a message by a poster that you don't already have on your ignore list. However, if you're typing... You could still see this poster's message if you scroll down at the bottom. So, don't look down there, I guess.

This is slightly related so I figured I'd ask. How do you send private messages? Every other message board I've been on allows me to send PM's but I've had problems doing that on this board.

You can't... The moderators have completely disabled the option. Beginning last year sometime, I think. I reckon they've done so due to a high volume of complaints or personal attacks toward them.

I was thinking that may be the case. That's a shame.

Is that right? I thought you just couldn't PM non-mods... I've definitely gotten in trouble here and been sent a PM from a mod and responded to him/her via PM.

The moderators don't have control over that. And PMing between regular posters has been turned off since before I even signed up. Since the board update, posters can't even PM mods. They've talked about fixing that, but it hasn't happened yet.

I see. I know I'd PM'ed a few moderators before, last year. And then I was going to PM a poster from another team's section recently and couldn't...

I wonder why the "ignore" button was removed? That made it much easier than the current system...

Why bother ignoring or blocking? To me, that's very Orwellian.

I personally don't ignore anyway...I say bring it on, but certain posters *do* get on my nerves immensely and I either gloss over their posts or skip them altogether (unless they're really being dipshits, in which case I fight back)...
