Rubio has been on the map at least 4 years

http://www.draftexpress.com/article/The ... port-1068/

That is Dated August 2005...He made his debut in the ACB more than 3 years ago. He had the crazy 51 point game in the summer of 06...he was no mystery to anyone who follows basketball a year ago.

That's true, he has youtube vids dating back to '06.

On Holiday-- (I'm not SNP, but I'm bored at work so deal with it) I see the potential, but I want to see more aggressiveness first before I am sold. I know he plays behind Collison and yada yada yada, but if you're putting in 30 minutes a night I would like to see a bigger effect on the game. I know Westbrook put up similar stats in a similar role, but Westbrook was a little different in that he had more athleticism, but was still developing the skills. Holiday, on the other hand is already a pretty developed basketball player, but has less athleticism. Basically, I'm wondering about Holiday's impact on offense at the next level and wondering whether he is just going to be another player who defers to others (ala Mike Miller). We still need a go-to guy in the back court to finish games as I'm growing a little weary of Foye's inconsistency. That's sort of why right now I find players like Henderson/Evans/Turner more intriguing. People might think I'm nuts, but I'm sort of starting to see a little bit of Vince Carter in Henderson and a little bit of T-Mac in Turner.

I think that's fair. My response is that even though he's been on the scene, I don't think anyone has a successful model of how to turn his stat sheet into a workable narrative about how well he'd play in the NBA. Do 1 year college players have a similar issue? Yep. I really wish more guys would stay for 2-3 years if only to reduce the amount of chance that comes with judging potential (Wake Forrest may have 3 guys test the potential risk/reward equation this year)? Definitely. However, there is still a significantly larger sample size to look at with NBA players and freshman numbers than there are with 18 year old Euro point guards who have been on the scene for a few years.

Also, even if NBA players come out in their sophomore, junior, or senior years, you can still look at their freshman season as a stand-alone event. Does this have a high degree of uncertainty? Yes, but it's less than what we have to work with when talking about EL players.

If anybody had that they could probably get an assistant GM job right now.

I kind of have a hard time with judging a prospect's NBA future based on a college state based formula. It's a different game, different size/speed of players/opponents, lower talent level, you're including stats of games against Sister Mary's College of the Blind along with games against Duke or UCLA and trying to say that Johnie Point Guard is going to be a stud.

Take Russell Westbrook. His college stats his Freshman year sucked, and his Sophomore year they were ok, not quite good, but a solid ok. Now he's showing in his rookie year that he's going to be a beast. His FT% the last three years has been 55%, 71%, and 82% in the pros, and he's getting to the line a hell of a lot more as a pro. Coming into the league he would have been considered a not so good free throw shooter, who can't get to the line. Kind of sucks when you're lead guard is labeled with that. And when he was in college he was considered a decent shooter, but in the pros he can't hit the broad-side of the barn. College stats would have given you completely wrong info on both regards.

Maybe a bad example, but I think you get the point.

Only way you can really judge most of these kids is by actually sitting down and watching them; how they play, their composure, court sense, and then run them through work-outs.

How about this guy:
6'11" 275pounds 18.1pts and 14.2 rebs a game. Shoots 60% from the field and 79% from FT stripe. Blocks 2.5 shots a game. What a monster, let's sign him up, his stats are amazing. He's youger than Thabeet, why aren't we talking about him?

Well cause it's John Bryant from Santa Clara and his team went 16-17 and got trounced by Gonzaga. he might be able to make a couple bucks over-seas or in the D-League, which is awesome considering what he went through a year ago getting stabbed, but he's not an NBA prospect. but his stats scream top 5.

A few things:

1- Part of what makes stats so useful is that you can account for the differences between the college and pro games over a period of years far more accurately (and with the ability to reproduce the results on a more accurate scale) than you can by simply watching player x in year y and wondering how he projects in relation to player z in year a. You can also adjust for conference, strength of schedule, etc.
2- Russell Westbrook's college stats did not suck. Someone figured out what to look for and went with him at the #4 pick. Sam Presti was this guy. He figured out how to weed out as many situational differences as possible with Westbrook at UCLA and he pulled the trigger.
3- John Bryant is a decent player but no one is going to use those net stats to form a statistical argument for or against the guy. I'd start by looking here:

http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Joh ... 317/stats/

or here:

http://www.kenpom.com/team.php?team=Santa%20Clara

With the Hoopus Score we had in our draft board, we had him at 19.444, which is below Jordan Hill, Thabeet, Blair, Aldrich, Hansborough, and Griffin and just above Monroe. Again, this is where you need to have scouting, but there are plenty of different ways to look at numbers...just as there are several different angles to look at a player. The trick is finding a method that is reproducable and can be subjected to quality control. His stats don't place him in elite company and I'm pretty sure he would be further reduced if I were clever enough to figure out how to account for things like conference difference, strength of schedule, etc.

According to your formula, though, you have Nick Calthes, who's a 2nd round pick over guys like Tyreke Evans and Gerald Henderson who are lottery picks. You have Ty Lawson as your top guard. Right there that tosses the formula out as a way of comparing them and who to draft. Unless I'm reading something wrong.

He totally abused an undersized and undermanned Bison post defense. He would look good in Blue, Green and Black

You plan on beating him up and throwing him in a grass pile? :-)

This isn't meant to be a 1-10 list of the best players in order. It's an efficiency measuring stick that you can use to weigh value in the draft. I'll use an example from last year: I had Mario Chalmers listed with a top 10 score. It obviously would have made zero sense to take him in the top 10 but, using this (or another consistent metric) measurement, his value increased with each pick after #10. This doesn't toss out anything. Also, I'm not really sure why saying that Ty Lawson is the best college guard disqualifies anything. Whoever gets him (probably in the late 1st) is going to get a steal. I'm going to guess Portland ends up with him if they don't trade for a point. The guy is a fantastic player and this is a down draft.

also, did Dejuan Blair really play all 40 minutes or is the ESPN box score I'm looking at inaccurate? If he did, I might be all turned around on the guy...

I've seen a couple games where the minutes said 40 for the entire starting line-up, yet the bench had stats. Those aren't right. He didn't play all 40.

"Speaking of which, you're going to find a lot of differing opinions about Rubio's ability to translate his style of play to the NBA. Some scouts still question his athleticism and perimeter shooting, with one GM we spoke to recently going as far as to say that he would “never draft a white guy.” "

I think it's safe to say that that wasn't the Wolves' GM, so I wouldn't worry.

and Harden and Teague both with terrible first games. Especially disappointing for Teague; can't be too good for his draft stock to be ending his season w/ consecutive one and done performances.
