Bears to open season against Packers in Green Bay

By: Larry Mayer | Last Updated: 3/23/2009 3:26 PM

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The Bears will open the 2009 season against the Green Bay Packers Sept. 13 at Lambeau Field on Sunday Night Football, the NFL announced Monday.

The Bears also opened the 2008 season on Sunday Night Football, defeating the Indianapolis Colts 29-13 last Sept. 7 in the inaugural game at Lucas Oil Stadium.

In five seasons as Bears coach, Lovie Smith has compiled a 7-3 record against the Packers. By comparison, predecessors Dave Wannstedt (1-11) and Dick Jauron (2-8) combined to go 3-19 versus Green Bay.

Smith had won his first four games at Lambeau Field before suffering a 37-3 loss last season that remains his most lopsided defeat as Bears coach.

I couldn't be happier about this. Lovie gets to gameplan for the Packers for 6 months. He can't be stopped when given that long to gameplan against the Pack.

Honestly though, this is a good thing IMO. The Pack will be switching to the 3-4 and may not be in sync on defense at that point.

I also think this is a great way to start the season, on Sunday night football no less! Huge opportunity to start 1-0 in the road and 1-0 in the division.

I'm a little dissapointed the Bears didn't get a Thanksgiving day game. Can we get the Lions off Thanksgiving yet?

Yes! The first Bears game I remembered watching in its entirety was the Packers Bears opener in 06 where Devin Hester took it to the house.

Great. So I'm the only person that thinks the Bears should be playing the Pack later in the season when it actually means something - like playoff pecking order ? Both our games against the Packers should be later in the season when the games have more meaning and the possibility of the elements playing a factor comes into play.
Turn down for what?
