Conclusion to a good season from the turtles. This game would have been a lot closer if we got more calls early or Memphis didn't have 30% shooters looking like Ray Allen out there.
Oh well, the future is bright if we get GV back and one of either Stephenson or Vinson.

Stephenson would make a huge difference. Vinson wouldn't - he's just another skinny guy who can't shoot from outside. Sorry the season had to end. I'm proud of the team.
Stephenson has announced that he will anounce his decision on March 31st - seriously.

Gary better learn the game of how to recruit.
He's got Stephenson's teammate signed.
I'm thinking Williams needs to do what the top recruiters do behind the scenes to get guys signed.

I don't want that CCJ. Paying a player's "friend" 450k to be an "assistant coach" ala Michael Beasley is so morally unethical and wrong. Its criminal that NCAA turns their back to this crap Kansas should forfeit their title IMO. They paid Chalmer's dad money to be on the staff. Gary will never sell his soul to do those types of things. I;d rather root for a clean team than the crap that goes on.

Agreed with the majority - sucky way to go out but a very enjoyable, exciting season to be sure.

Calls or hot shooting had nothing to do with this loss.
Bottomline: This game was about size and athleticism.
President Donald Trump referred to African countries, Haiti and El Salvador as "shithole" nations during a meeting Thursday and asked why the U.S. can't have more immigrants from Norway.

This may have been posted but why didn't Burney or Goins get any playing time?
Are they that bad or ineligable??
I thought Dupree would have gotten a couple of minutes but he didn't either,
it appears that Dupree is either that bad or is lazy and really couldn't get out of
Gary's doghouse, probably not a good place to be, ever.

With Burney, it was the foot problems that have plagued him throughout his career. Otherwise, he would have been a rotation player. Goins is very raw, and Dupree is just too soft. I would expect/hope that Dupree transfers.

WARNING: mhd, I've got nothing but love for your posts and respect for you. Hopefully, you'll still respect me after this post ....
mhd, to me you sound like Gary on why he won't recruit MD/DC area kids. Crooked guys he'd have to deal with?
Selling one's soul? I could just as easily say I'd rather not go the route Coach K goes. Squeeky clean, affluent kids black and white, but mostly white.
As far as the NCAA goes, how many billion dollars do they rake in? How much do coaches get paid? And their endorsements? Can a coach up and leave a program or get fired? And can the kids recruited by the D-1 school leave? Hell no, unless they want to forfeit a year and only after they get another scholarship.
If I were a big-time player I'd know my marquee value before I even went to the school.
I don't blame Lance Stephenson for putting himself on the market for as many potential suitors who are lining up to coach him for one or two years. He should take care of his family. What if he gets hurt or never pans out in the pros? Kid, get that paper is what I'd say to him. Just don't break any NCAA rules doing it.
My stance is the NCAA makes money hand over fist and guys like Gary can burn much money in his barbecue pit and still make deposits on pay day.
Bill Self and others might be crooks or they might be pragmatists who see the NCAA as full of crap.
Gary doesn't give a crap about guys graduating. Does he? He sure doesn't recruit scholar athletes like Duke (the school with 3-yr skate programs where their guys can get bastardized, easy degrees if they play basketball).
I'm ranting. Sorry.
I think Gary shouldn't break any NCAA rules, but if Lance Stephenson's mom can coach hire her. If she can cook and wants to be the team's new nutritionists. Hire her. His AAU coach, make him an assistant coach.

Re: Official Maryland Terps Thread 2.0
Dunno. Seems to me the MD program has a slightly tougher row to hoe. Following Len Bias and then the NCAA slapping them with solitary confinement and waterboarding for a few years, the Terps have had to run a program that doesn't even tiptoe the line of violations. But they don't quite have quite the top dollar or the NBA mystique of their direct competition in the ACC (Carolina for instance) and their academics don't have the rep that a Duke does.
And Gary's style may be unappealing to the more pampered AAU athletes. Dude sweats, looks like a cadaver, and spends half the game shouting not laid back and smooth. Fact is to play for Gary you do best if you're an equally toughminded sonofagun who can buy into the David and Goliath act that lets him steal a game or two every year from the 'Heels and Blue Devils, like he does. If you're a top baller, being oozed up to by Calipari or Rikipitino, with NBA experience in a program with lax scrutiny from the locals, being treated like a demigod-- sounds more like the right style than being cussed out by a guy in a sopping wet suit.
Plus, really, some part of the college experience is the ability to get _away_ from home. Even Georgetown is in a rich pretty enclave surrounded by good shops and a real college campus (with HOF reputation alumni checking in all the time). Maryland is a bunch of couchburning louts clogging Route One and happily rioting in celebration of whatever. And you don't have to travel very far to end up back in the same rough hood you grew up in, with all the hangers on waiting on your first contract.
Gary could recruit local highschool coaches better, sure, whatever. But that's no guarantee that he pulls in the bluechip guys. And the fact is he plain doesn't shmooze the grannies/mommies well, he looks like an IRS agent, and chances are when he stands up he's left a sweatstain on your couch. Truth is he does best in years when he's got a guy to do the schmoozing for him. Make no mistake though, the guy's a good coach and he can develop _guards_ as well as anybody.

Re: Official Maryland Terps Thread 2.0
I was talking about this with a co-worker today. Gary's got money. He's got a ring -- at his once-disgraced alma mater no less. Given that, what do you think is more gratifying for him -- sucking off one and done guys or building relationships with outcasts and we-don't-wants like Juan Dixon and Lonny Baxter?
Gary had the Steve Francis experience. Since, he seems to have deliberately avoided early flight risks. I can hardly blame him. I can't imagine it's much fun bending over backward to sig who a kid who's thinking about the NBA half the time he's supposedly devoted to your program.
I agree with CCJ that the system is corrupt and broken, but I also don't see an end in sight. I don't fault Gary for the way he does things.

CCJ, Coach K is as dirty as the rest of them. Chris Duhon's mom got a job she was totally unqualified for with a duke booster in North Carolina. Boozer's dad had similar issues. Maggette and Myron Piggy ring a bell?
Oh, and regarding grad rates. I think they are bogus. 99% of Gary's players the last 15 years went on to pro careers. The 6 year rule is a joke. Keith Booth graduated after playing pro ball, but he doesn't count because it took him ten years. Maryland doesn't allow transfer credits for your last 30 credits. Thus, you have to be on campus to get your last 30 credits.
Francis graduated after taking summer school for years. Holden graduated, but he doesn't count because he played pro ball. Danny Miller graduated, but he doesn't count because he transferred. MANY of their players graduate, but don't count because they play pro ball and finish up years later.
I read a story about how a player in the PAc-10 who went to the NBA, demanded 10k for any official visit. That's illegal, yet the NCAA could care less. I'm sorry, I'd rather win the right way, then way Kansas and the rest do it.
BTW, don't think I'm against paid stipends, because I'm not. However, until their is legislation passed, there is an ethical dilemma that I would not cross.

That'll never eeeeeever happen under Gary Williams' watch.
Gary has had 1 guy flunk out while basketball eligible in his entire coaching career.

mhd, I'm not at all surprised to hear that about Coach K. Bet he and Roy Williams do have very "supportive" boosters taking care of those McDonald's AAs left and right.
As for defending Gary's record of having guys go pro and graduate, I've got absolutely no problems with the man. (Did in the past, I admit.) I even concede after this season that Gary Williams can DEFINITELY coach. That team he had this season was crap. He coached them way up. They beat Wake, Mich State, Carolina and a pretty good Cal team. That's coaching!
All I'm saying, mhd, is Gary's recruiting could be much better if he were a little bit more realistic and a little less idealistic. Values are one thing, but I believe he needs to really be informed before he totally excludes a county (Prince George's) and some of the best AAU players on the planet.
Gary needs to use guys like Joe Smith and Tony Massenburg to try and recuit some young bigs. The head coach should at least make an appearance here and there, and just send somebody else to talk in areas Gary's not comfortable.

Is it really cheating and unethical if EVERYONE ELSE is doing it? At some point you just have to accept the culture for what it is. It's like steroids in baseball. If everyone is doing it, you don't really have a choice if you want to compete.

Anyone else watching the ladies play Vandy?
It's halftime but the Terps were down by 17 points in the first half, then went on a huge run and have cut it to 3 going into the half.
And I'm officially in love with Marissa Coleman.

What an incredible game. Terps take their first lead of the game late in the 2nd half.
52.3 seconds to go, Terps up 2. Vanderbilt with possession.
Coleman with a career high 38 points.
