Steelers could acquire extra picks

DANA POINT, Calif. — The Steelers will learn today at the NFL owners' meetings how many extra draft picks they get this year.
The Steelers already have eight picks in the draft — they picked up an additional one in the seventh round via the trade that sent center Sean Mahan to Tampa Bay last September — and they could get as high as a third-round pick for losing perennial Pro Bowl guard Alan Faneca to free agency last year.
Compensatory picks, which are made at the end of rounds three through seven, are awarded based on how many free agents a team loses and how many it signs in a given year. The Steelers lost Faneca and outside linebacker Clark Haggans in 2008 while signing running back Mewelde Moore and linebacker Keyaron Fox.
Starting center Justin Hartwig, who joined the team last March, does not figure into the formula for compensatory picks since he signed with the Steelers after he had been released by the Carolina Panthers.
Past compensatory picks made by the Steelers include right tackle Willie Colon (fourth round in 2006) and cornerback William Gay (fifth round in 2007), the front-runner to take the place of Bryant McFadden in the starting lineup.

You on it loco. It would be great that the Steelers can get som extra picks in the draft. Most of the picks as always go towards the DLine and OLine as needed. And as mentioned in another thread, picking up a fast WR or two can help a lot for the Steelers.

Dang, it could have been from the end of the 3rd round down. I do believe these picks are taken after every other pick in a round, but before the next round starts. Last picks of the rounds. A late 5th is better than nothing, but a late 3rd might have awarded us a nice shot at a fast receiver or something. According to people on the draft boards following the Steelers, if we don't get a speedster at receiver in the first 3 rounds, look for us to draft a db who can return kicks. Like the way we did with Poteat, coclough (sp), and others over the years. It could be a nickel/prevent player for us maybe this is something we can use the free pick on.

More likely with the extra pick coming later in the 5th round. I suspect this will be used on the defense for sure.
