Rondo`s jump shot...

Post#1 » by BillessuR6 » Tue Mar 24, 2009 11:55 am

The most enjoyable thing for me in the last few games was watching Rondo take the jump shot. I don`t even care if he makes it at this point, for me it is important that he has the confidence to take it. At the start of the season he refused to shoot but now sometimes he even looks for it. And the best part is that the form actually looks very good.

I just hope he continues to work on it because if he can knock down that mid rage jumper he will be unstoppable...

There is a nice article on celticshub about the Evolution of Rondo`s jumper...

Link: http://celticshub.com/2009/03/23/the-ev ... -of-rondo/

Rondo in the last 10 games:
- 11-of-23 on jumpers in the 18-20-foot range
- has taken 55 shots at the rim and 48 shots from everywhere else

Another thing I noticed is that before when Rondo made jumpshots, most of them rimmed in - they weren't clean. Lately, a lot of his makes on jumpshots have been all net which shows his improvement. Before it luck sometimes that his shots went in, lately that's not been the case. Hopefully he continues to build off that, but his confidence with his jumpshot goes through cycles.

Yep, he hit a couple of nice ones against the spurs. It was great to watch a player go under the screen and Rondo just pull up for the J.

Opens up his game and the court for everyone else :)

If Rondo gets consistent with that FT line extended shot behind the screen, its going to be very hard to beat this team...

Agreed...but weren't we saying this at the end of last season? That he didn't improve in these areas in the offseason is inexcusable...

That is because he only started working on his jump shot this season...

No...there were reports all season last year that he was doing the pre-game shooting rituals with Ray, so that's not accurate...

He did it here and there but not consistently.

It was this season that he started his own routine. He does it after each training and it shows. But it is kind of said he only started doing this after KG challenged him...still, better late than never, I guess...

So he's learned to shoot seemingly at the expense of guarding his opponent, allowing easy penetration and an easy bucket from, say, for instance, Dwight Howard and costing us the game.

Guard your man you cocky little bugger, move your feet, fight over or under the screen. KG didn't teach him the matador D, did he?

He must be a handful to coach.

Rondo cost us the game? That's a good one, there. Yep, Rondo actually isn't a good defender. Our pick and roll defense has broken down because he isn't guarding his man right. It just took taking away our good defensive bigs (with the exception of Perk), to see that he actually isn't that good.

Or it could be that the pick and roll - a two man play on BOTH sides of the ball - is now a sore spot for us because one of our two men now sucks at it. Is that guy Rondo? Well, wasn't he one of those two men when we actually did defend it well? Or could it be... what we have left?

Nahhh... that makes too much sense.

Really the 1st half play was where he disappeared on d. Just was the easiest pg on earth to get by. Did you watch the game?

D. Marshall and Mike commented several times about it for what it's worth, but their bball IQ is low, i guess.

Maybe it's just my take on the game and how people regard picks. I love Heinsohn, for example, but he seemingly thinks that picks are easy to get around and that if someone sets one on you, that you should still stay in front of your man... by yourself. As I pointed out to someone else, just go down to the gym, play two on one vs someone else where you defend every play, and have them set picks on you. The ball handler is either going to get an easy jumper or lay in every time, provided he knows what he is doing. Not some of the time. Every time.

My personal favorite of Tommy, regarding picks, is a game we played against the Knicks where Rondo wasn't going to the basket. Tommy says "Well, Rondo should be scoring with ease against this guy off of the picks." The problem was that we didn't set any for him, which kind of makes the whole "Scoring off of picks" thing hard to manage. Or when he says that a guy can't stay with him, even though we are picking that guy off. Well, yeah, he can't stay with Rondo.. but many times that is because that dudes own teammtes got caught with their pants down. No one can "stay with " Rajon if he has a pick set on him and the defense doesn't step up. No one. Good pick and roll defense is about recovery time, not about sliding through picks as if they aren't there. Sometimes you can do it, most of the time that isn't happening. That is why that play is used so much.

Could Rondo have been better. Yeah. I do not deny that. If he was 100% healthy, and really tearing around, he might have stopped a couple more of those drives.

^^^ Personally, I feel that Donny says a lot of stupid things. That is just me. I watched the ESPN broadcast, though, so I didn't hear what he said exactly.
