Titans Draft Needs 2009

Post#1 » by SD2042 » Sun Mar 8, 2009 10:43 pm

Here are the list of positions the Titans need to update during the draft or free agency.

WR- This is a must at this position. The Titans WR core struggled bad last season to maintain a sense of consistancy in the aerial game. The RBs' were hevily relied upon to handle the offensive load b/c of this. The Titans have to get back that offensive balance that they once had back when the likes of WRs' Derrick Mason, Drew Bennett, Justin McCarriens(from the past), and Kevin Dyson. WRs' who can wide out the defense and are capable of catching the long thrown passes. The Titans lost Brandon Jones and replace him with former Steelers WR Nate Washington. More to come.

Free agents WRs' to consider: Miles Austin, Torry Holt, Ronald Curry

DT- With the Titans taking a hit with the loss of Albert Haynesworth to the Redskins. Their defense has a kink in the armor they need to repair. Although the Titans signed DT Jovon Haye from Tampa Bay last week. He's an unknown commodity which means no one knows what to expect from his skills on the field and how much difference it could make.

Free agent DTs' to consider: Dwan Edwards,

CB- The Titans have a veteran in Nick Harper who isn't as fast as he once was despite his efforts. Tyrone Poole is another vet who barely hit the field this past season. Both of these vets are either 34 or above at this point in their careers. Eric King left for Detroit. Reynaldo Hill is a free agent. So far, the Titans and Hill haven't reached any agreements for Hill to comeback to the Titans.

Free agents to consider at CB in case of Hill departure; Armad Carroll, Kevin Dockery, Keiwan Ratliff,

C With Kevin Mawae getting on up there. The center position needs to be upgraded. The Titans roster has others that play at the position, but the current players that play the center position also play at other positions on the team as well. So who's to say what will happen in the draft concerning this position.

Free agents to consider at C: Rudy Niswanger, Cory Procter

Receiver should be the first draft pick the titans may go for in the draft. Can't say who will fall to the Titans pick imo. Just hope for the best to happen for the team and that they pick the right players in this year's draft.

There is an article that states Tennessee could wind up cutting Vince Young this summer and reaping $15 million in cap space by doing so. http://www.associatedcontent.com/articl ... tml?cat=14

Normally, I wouldn't make much of this, but in the article it states that Kansas State QB Josh Freeman will be visiting the Titans. If the Titans actually drafted Freeman, it would most likely be the end of the Vince Young era in Tennessee. I'm not too high on Freeman though; he seems like another project at QB, just like VY was. I would rather shoot for Mark Sanchez, who I think is going to be a great NFL quarterback.

The Jaguars are supposedly desperate to get out of the #8 slot- http://www.profootballtalk.com/2009/04/ ... e-top-ten/

If I was calling the shots for the Titans, and Mark Sanchez and was on the board at #8, I would trade up to that slot, draft him, and then cut VY and get that $15 million in cap space, which would essentially pay for the #8 pick and then some. But hey, I'm not calling the shots so the chances of this happening are very low.

No way, I think there's much more pressing needs to be addressed before they even start thinking of QB. With the way last season unfolded, the Titans should be in win-now situation, which means looking to add to what they have right now, and going with Kerry Collins at the helm (as unnerving as that sounds)

I understand where you are coming from, but Tennessee is apparently willing to give up on Vince Young, cut him, and take Josh Freeman (who is a going to be a major project), so why wouldn't they be willing to cut Vince Young, move up into one of those slots in the top 10 in which teams are trying desperately to get out of, and take Mark Sanchez, who IMO has better potential and is much more NFL ready than Freeman? The cap space salvaged by cutting Young would cover the contract of Sanchez and then some.

Sanchez would come in and actually battle Collins for the starting job. Freeman is going to take a few years and be a project, and I think I can speak for all Titans fans when I say we are tired of project QBs.

I prescribe to the theory that Rookie QBs take a while to develop - Your Ben Roethlisbergers and Matt Ryans come out only once in a while. I don't see Mark Sanchez coming in and performing that well.

Also, you have to think about what the Titans would have to give up to move in to the top-10. It would be minimm, 1st rounder this year, 1st rounder next year and a 2nd this year. That's a lot to be trading away especially considering the Titans are in win mode and need as many picks as possible to cover holes and shore up depth.
