Hypothetical Opponent Question

Post#1 » by magicfan4life05 » Sun Mar 29, 2009 9:03 pm

Hey guys, I've been following the team all year and now that they are heading into the home stretch trying to secure home court throughout the playoffs, I've been watching closely the chase for best overall record in the NBA: basically Cavs vs Lakers

Cleveland has had a 1 or 1.5 game lead over LA for the last 2 weeks or so and there's a very good chance they finish with the best record....and I know that can change (especially since LA just has to tie them record wise since they hold the tiebreaker), but let's just say for the sake of argument Cleveland holds on to the top overall seed in the League.

So assuming things stay where they are and the cavs finish with a slightly better record, which team would the Lakers prefer to matchup with in the Finals if/when that happens:

Cavs (Lakers don't have home court)

or

Celtics (Lakers have home court advantage)
Dwight Howard on his FT struggles:

"I just think everybody needs to stop talking about it," Howard said. "There's more to life than free throws."

Cavs would be an easier task IMO, since we matchup better.
but I am with the consensus as well and want Boston

cavs dont have the front court talent/depth to challenge a full strength laker front court

sure, this season has turned into a kobe vs lebron season

but if anyone digs up some threads from october last year, most lakers fans were still bitter over the way we lost to boston

so boston, while they cant use the "getting too old" excuse

I want Boston again for two reasons.

1. Game 6 last year. I want revenge, Leonidas-style. I want to make the Celtics suffer for what was done to us last year. I want to see Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, and Kevin Garnett walk off their home floor in shame at the end of Game 5, knowing what is waiting for them at Staples Center (the worst blowout loss in Celtic Franchise History).

2. Cleveland's about to clinch the East's best record and potentially the League. We start off at home if Boston makes it with us since they're not catching us this season.

Kobe vs lebron would be awsome and would get the media going nuttz... Lakers would have it easier with the cavs because the only position that they have over the lakers is PG. Kobe cancels out LBJ, None of them can guard Odom when he is agressive, Vujachic can match Pavlo's shoting, No answer for bynum, I mean...we beat them twice (right...?)

With that being said, I want BOSTON!!

REVENGE!!!

I want KG at full health, Paul pierce as dangerous as ever, and Ray Ray healthy and.... hell i even want Marbury at full strenght as long as Bynum comes into the finals as Bynausorous as before! I will not be satisfied until Lakers beat them sons of b***** down. The trophy must be stripped from the hands of the celtics. and it must be done "Leonidas-style"!

Boston, because of the home court advantage.

However, we need to get there first and I'm not as confident as I was a couple months ago that we can.

I'm really confused why you said that, not that it really matters, but I've pretty much made it known I root for LA additionally and you check the playoffs threads last year I've posted in then.

I don't see the problem, many mods in fact root for a couple of teams.

I guess I can't really blame you as I don't post as often, but make no mistake, I've been following the team very closely and was just asking a simple question in anticipation of the playoffs.

The OP is a very chill NBA fan. He has not "intent". His questions are serious and don't have hidden meanings.

That being said, I want to make the Finals first and yeah, my first choice would be Boston.

My bad magicfan4life05, I didn't mean for it to come off in a negative impression. I think I confused you with another that goes by that name or some what close to it on the Magic board. But the question was legit, that's why I answered while closing out my post. You don't have to validate to me on how often you post that doesn't matter, as long as your a fan it's all good with me always feel free to join the convo here.

I'd take Cleveland since they're the less talented team of the two and would be interesting to see how fresh LBJ & cast stay 3 months later after logging in giant minutes all through the season. My only concern would be the calls the NBA might give in favor of Cleveland at home.

No worries man, thanks for hearing me out. I know it can be a little confusing, it happens a lot actually...(I didn't really come up with the most clever/unique name  )

Also, thanks for the kind words Phil !

I just can't wait for the playoffs to get started. I'm still holding out hope for the Lakers to try to get that #1 overall seed but with yesterday's loss vs atlanta it might be tough. The most important thing is for the team to get healthy (get bynum back) and have the mindset of they can beat any team they face with or w/o homecourt.

But if we're discussing it between the fans and it were me personally to decide which team to face...I honestly still can't decide whether having homecourt vs boston or not having it vs cleveland

I think LA matches up better with Cleveland than Boston but homecourt means so much in the Finals...

I can't decide !

I'd rather face Boston for revenge, as Deep3CL said uptop.

but...what's up with us thinking the Celtics are more difficutl than the Cavs? Celtics will be lucky to make it to the ECF's with Garnett out. The Cavs are straight STEAMROLLING through everyone they face, has anyone even come close to to beating them lately?

Yes, I hope we face the celtics because i believe we'll have 3 years ahead of LA/CLE rivalries, and we should put some closure on the loss to Boston last year, but people are SERIOUSLY underestimating how good the Cavs are.

it doesn't really matter, the lakers have shown they can handle both.
Only on realgm is 27,000 points, 5 rings, 1 rs mvp and 2 finals mvp considered overrated!

People are underestimating the Cavs but the fact is we still match up better with them. Assuming all teams play at their best, we can exploit the Cavs but Bos can still bully us up front (without Drew).

we do match up better against the Cavs but i don't want this team to get their first taste of victory against the Cavs, i want it against the Celtics. We need to closure on that like SoCal said. I want to face the Celtics even if we didn't have Home Court, i want to strip away that trophy and make them understand that the 2 victories during the season were no fluke, that even without Bynum we took them down IN BOSTON!

I AGREE WITH THOSE THAT SAID I WANT TO FACE THE CELTICS AND BEAT 'EM LEONIDAS-STYLE!
2014: Randle / Clarkson
2015: Russell / Nance
2016: Ingram / Zubac
2017: Top 3 Pick? Fultz, Ball or Bust

Game 5? make it game 4 :D. Imagine the Lakers sweeping the Celtics IN BOSTON and their fake bandwagon fans chanting MVP for Kobe!!! That would be sooo sweet
