CBC drops the Toronto Blue Jays

Post#1 » by LittleOzzy » Fri Mar 27, 2009 12:48 am

CBC English Services plans to cut up to 80 positions from its news division and a further 313 from sports, entertainment, current affairs, sales and support across the country as part of its efforts to make up a $171-million shortfall in 2009-10.

Richard Stursberg, executive vice-president of CBC's English Services, announced details of the cutbacks to radio and TV in a speech to employees on Thursday. The details came a day after CBC president and chief executive Hubert Lacroix announced the public broadcaster would have to cut about 800 full-time positions in total at the CBC/Radio-Canada, as well as selling about $125 million in assets.

In CBC Sports, there will be reductions or cutbacks in coverage of:

* International figure skating.
* CONCACAF Champions League soccer.
* World aquatics.
* World athletics.
* Skiing.

The CBC will also drop its Blue Jays baseball telecasts.

I actually enjoyed listening to Jim Hughson. Reminded me of the glory days when he'd broadcast for TSN.

It's disappointing, but I thought this was announced a while a ago. Perhaps not formally though.

Also, while Hughson was great, the colour commentary was (amazingly) even worse than on Sportsnet.

Yea, wasn't it Jesse Barfield?

As long as all games are televised, I don't care what channel it's on. For all sports.

That could very well be the case.

I doubt the Score or another non-sports network will pick them up like CTV or Global.

ouch, NO WAY for TSN2 (I guess this is your queue LittleOzzy to go on your "if you don't like Rogeres, cancel and go to Bell" routine? ;) )

But yeah, Hughson did bring back memories.. I remember he did the commentary for EA Sports' Triple Play 99 or something

I have been down that road too many times. I understand why you guys are frustrated.

I have a feeling with the Jays season likely being a pretty bad one that those games will just simply not be picked up.

lol no worries, I understand you're just trying to provide us an alternative.

Agreed, the outlook for this season does not seem very good, and I can definitely see a lot of games being pushed to TSN2.

FWIW, advertising does work. I do not watch any of these shows, but by watching the Raps on CBC, I hear about shows like Little Mosque, Being Erica and what was that show with the Wild West?

I actually hope some games go on TSN2, so amybe now Rogers will have a bigger incentive to get TSN2.

Hope.

I think if you've heard about these shows and don't watch them, that's the definition of advertising not working... They actually want you to watch, J-Roc! :wink:

Well, it's not working on me, but there might be someone out there who tuned in to see what Erica did next. haha I just realized I haven't been watching any shows on CBC. Actually, I watch Dragon's Den, but I usually PVR it and FWD thru the commercials. WIth sports, and with Matt telling Leo to watch the show, you can't avoid hearing the promo. Advertising in sports works.

Do you think TSN will move all the games they have already bought to TSN2 to put pressure on Rogers?

It might be TSN's final play. If Rogers doesn't care about Jays games not being shown, then TSN will never have leverage. On one hand, the games have been sold and Rogers has their money for Bluejays rights. But, the Jays are sinking fast in the Toronto market and Rogers needs to prop them up.

I still have nightmares about Brian Williams' horrible play-by-play.
