Jays cautious with Marcum, McGowan

Post#1 » by LittleOzzy » Mon Mar 30, 2009 1:20 am

If it were up to Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston, he would probably have injured starters Dustin McGowan and Shaun Marcum put their comeback plans on hold until 2010. Both pitchers could conceivably return at some point this season, but Gaston isn't sure it would be worth the risk.

Marcum is making his way back from the Tommy John ligament-replacement surgery he had on his right elbow at the end of last season. He has been working through a throwing program this spring and has impressed Toronto's training and coaching staff. If Marcum continues to progress like he has so far, he could potentially be ready by August or September.

Gaston added that right-hander Casey Janssen, who had right shoulder surgery last March and had an unrelated shoulder issue come up this spring, is likely out of the picture until May. Janssen was a candidate for a rotation job this spring before exiting a start on March 19 with shoulder tightness. Janssen is limited to playing light catch on flat ground for the time being.

damn this pitching roster has been really injured... Ryan was out for the entire 2007 season, Janssen was out for the entire 2008 season, and now potentially McGowan and Marcum will be missing a ton of time...

It would be huge to get McGowan back- he easily would be come the #2 behind Doc and had great stuff last year.

It would be pointless bringing Marcum back in August or September because they will most likely be out of the race by then. If the record is good then I can understand bringing Mcgowan back earlier in the season once he is ready.

I think the point of bringing either of the two of them back in august or september (if Mcgowan takes that long) is help them get off to a good start in '10, since that's (hopefully) our shot.

yeah, no point rushing them, i doubt we will be in contention, may as well play it safe with these guys rather than risking mroe injury

Any chance McGowan or Marcum return this season?

Post#7 » by rarefind » Wed Apr 8, 2009 9:09 pm

Any chance these guys return to the jays this year or start throwing at all? Haven't heard much on how they are recovering.

Marcum is out til next year.

McGowan was initially scheduled to return in May, but his recovery hasn't progressed as expected. There was an article last week saying that it wouldn't be a surprise if he didn't come back until next season either.

This season is going to suck without our #2 and 3 pitchers.

Got to be cautious.

Next year our rotation could set up as:

McGowan
Marcum
Litsch
Purcey
Cecil/Romero

Lots of youth - we'll need M & M to set the pace.

That would look even better with Doc in there.
