Kentucky is about to break the bank?? 140million?

Post#1 » by Amen316 » Tue Mar 31, 2009 12:31 am

In this time of recession, you wouldnt know it from the emails being passed around that Kentucky is about to offer John Calipari an 8-year 140 million. Of course this will make Calipari the richest coach in the history of any sports, but supposedly 65mil guarantee with 25million early termination.

Hopefully there is some Kentucky Wildcat people in Real GM that could confirm or deny if these emails are true? Any word on local radio, tv, or campus?

I editted the new amount from the bogus email still alot of money (suppose to be 35-40million*)

College sports is a disgrace in the US, and so is the state of Kentucky and the administration of the University of Kentucky.

Kentucky is a state that ranks in the bottom for spending on educating students K-12, yet the state's public university is willing to give out 40 million to a basketball coach.

I feel like I can safely say this deal will ruin college basketball.

This can't be real.

e: I just checked and it looks like he turned down a forty million dollar offer over six years from Memphis to go to Kentucky.

This is pretty much a shame.

It's a terrible move to hire a coach so soon anyway, didn't they learn anything from their fast mistake than to just go jump on the first good coach that shows interest? Wait until after the Final Four and try to interview Izzo and a few more people, geez!

You dont really get better than Calipari. If they didn't sign him soon he could have re-upped, or signed elsewhere.

Wow that would be a huge contract. Obviously he would be crazy not to take it. It doesn't get much better then getting paid that much to coach at one of the best basketball colleges of all time. Of course the pressure he would be under for his team to perform would be huge. haha

Except that it is only off by about 105 million dollars.
While Calipari met with Memphis officials earlier Monday, representatives for both sides were working out details of an agreement. Sources told ESPN.com that the offer is believed to be for eight years and around $35 million.

It sounds modest compared to some of the wacky rumored numbers, but that's still a hell of a lot for a college coach. Pete Carroll was the highest paid college employee in the country in 2007 and he made about 4.4 million in total compensation; Calipari will make 4.5 million a year on the back four of this deal. And that's assuming he makes it through the whole deal, since the Gillespie saga proved how impatient officials at Kentucky can be.

Poor Memphis. A couple players are following Calipari to UK, Tyreke Evans is apparently declaring for the draft, and odds are good they'll lose their great recruiting class too. It's gonna be hard to recover in that conference.
