Should the Suns rebuild or attempt a playoff run next season

Post#1 » by Inconspicuous » Tue Mar 31, 2009 6:07 am

Should the Suns trade for expirings and young talent to rebuild, or should we attempt another playoff run next season with a (hopefully) healthy Amare? IMO, we should attempt a final playoff push, if we don't get far then wait for Nash/Shaq/Amare to expire in 2010, let the team build through the draft and hopefully become relevant again in 5 or so years.

I think so. We don't have our 2010 draft pick so this is not the year to rebuild.

If the Suns can get a few 2010 first rounders from other teams for Shaq, J-Rich, Nash or Amare they should go for a full rebuild.

shaq and nash cannot co exist in one team. to much liablity on the defensive end. suns need to get younger specially at the 3 position and 5 position.

- center who can hit outside shots just like kurt thomas and with good rebounding skills, average defense
- amare
- young small forward - good defensive player like marion
- jrich
- nash
im thinking of rasheed wallace and prince but i dont know how to get those two. i just wish detroit wont have any success in playoffs this year.

with shaq expiring contract, will it be easier to trade him after this season?

I would give them one more season to attempt a playoff run and see if they can succeed with a healthy team and a brand new coach for a full season. Then after that year basically do what nashill just posted. :D

I'm thinking that they should go for one more playoff run. That is if Alvin Gentry will still be coaching the team next season.

It would be more worthwhile to see how this team can go for a full season under his coaching.

We should give this team one more run, resign Barnes and Hill and keep the core until at least the trade deadline. If at the All-Star break we have a decent seed and look like we should be in the playoffs then we'll go on from there. Otherwise we'll move a few guys around. Considering Shaq is an expiring, I don't think it'll be hard to move him for young guys and picks.

Easy answer. Playoff run, people forget we are missing Amare and Barbs which account for at minimum about 30% of offense. Coupled with the the new found confidence players have under Gentry, why not. If they can sign some more players to get even younger, it would be great. Just giving away our draft pick next year should push Kerr to keep us competitive.

I'd love for the team to come back in full with Amare healthy. But i get the feelings we're not gonna get the chance with Sarver. Although if he's all about saving money, after next year he'll have a LOT of caproom.

The 2006 Miami Heat had Shaq and Jason Williams co existing. Jwill is also a terrible defender. Yea, they are probably the worst team to ever win the title, but they did play great defense.

I am with you guys, it would be interesting to see the team healthy for a season provided Shaq and Nash have enough in the tank for another year. And I really like the contributions of our bench lately with Dudley/Lou etc. But aren't they already planning to cut Nash loose? And what is Grant Hill going to do after this year?

Rebuilding means 1 or 2 terrible seasons and not having our 2010 draft pick really hurts and effectively makes a terrible season "useless". So we're better off staying with what we have, maybe give more minutes to Dragic, Dudley and company and plan a rebuild for 2010.

Ah, I'd trade Amare also...

The only reason why I would say to go for another run next year is are twofold. We have no pick and we have ALOT of money coming off of the books to start the rebuilding process in the summer of 2010.

Its going to be long no matter what. I would say we have to make the right choices and not go and blow it up without making sure we are getting nice pieces back.

Suns need to know if Amare is their guy. If Jrich or barbs is your future at the SG position? I think you have to be open to the right trade and or stick it out.

This team has so much talent, but I personally think they cannot make it next year. Outside of Amare, this team has been healthy and still is going to fall short. That might not be the case next year with old vets. I also think they are run down physically and mentally and cannot put it together to make a run. I hope I am wrong, but honestly, I want to see this team move on. Move on to the next chapter of this organization and lets see how Kerr, Sarver and the staff can rebuild a team. Lets see how they fair and how long the process will be.

Look at how Portland rebuilt. Maybe look at the model and at the right time, get picks. However, you have to have an owner who will pay out for picks. Sarver wont.

Suns need to ship Shaq off because he is their #1 liability on both ends because he is unable to cover the floor like a Lou Amundson or Dwight Howard. The rest of the players can get it done with the right #5.

Rasheed Wallace for the MLE, get it done son. Spaces the court so Amaretard to wreak havoc in the middle running P & R's with Nash.

Draft a SF such as Earl Clark or James Johnson and we are good to go.

All of you guys are right. Keep the team together, draft Clark or Johnson (glad I am not the only who can see either of the two as a perfect fit). That gives us major depth. Shaq plays less mins, hopefully Lopez becomes decent. Grant wants to come back!! That tells you something. If we are sucking at the break, Nash and Shaq expiring will be huge. If the Suns get a great offer for Nash or Shaq during this off season, (preferablly Shaq) then make a trade, only if it is in our favor. We will have major cash in 2010. No need to take five seasons off like Portland!

We can't get it done, unless it is a sign and trade. We are over the cap. We have to bring back Shaq's money in contracts. I do think that is a killer line up, with our new SF coming off of the bench in his first year, behind Grant.
