Springfield will get D-League team..

Post#1 » by greenbeans » Tue Mar 31, 2009 8:24 pm

And we thought it was tough to come up with names for Portland? Wow..
Springfield Originals?
Granpappys?
BOSTON -- The birthplace of basketball is getting a pro team.

Michael Savit, managing partner of the ownership group, says an NBA Development League team will begin play at Springfield's MassMutual Center in the 2009-2010 season.

The team does not yet have a nickname or team colors.

So this pretty much means the C's will likely be there, rather than Portland. This **** sucks for me.

the Springfield team's NBA affiliation is uncertain, but said it will probably be an East Coast team. He said it is unlikely to be the Boston Celtics, however, who will likely be affiliated with the D-League's Maine franchise.

I am not sure Springfield automatically wins the C's over Portland. IMHO Portland guys are a little more Boston oriented (sports teams wise) whereas Springfield and West of has quite a few NY fans.

This is true. I live in western MA and Springfield would support a NY affiliate better than Portland could, but I'm guessing due to geography Springfield would get the Celtics and Portland would get Toronto. Of course nothing's set in stone, wasn't the Falcons the affiliate of the San Jose Sharks at some point (or is that Worcester)? As long as the Celtics D League affiliate is one of them, cool, but I'd guess it'd be Springfield over Portland, because it's also closer to where they train in Waltham.

Eh, both are within two hours drive of Waltham and Boston. Springfield is like 25 minutes closer. I don't think proximity is the issue.

And going from Portland to Boston they don't have to pay as much toll as they would if they commute between Springfield and Boston. This is key.

I highly doubt that they will get Bostons team, Portland has no need for a team if it isn't going to be involved with the Celtics, in fact, if it's not I have every belief that the team will fail.

the people behind the Portland team, and Portland worked along side people involved with the Celtics, and Portland isn't in Utah, it's around two hours at best.

Ya, I live right here in Portland, drove down to Boston just the other day, two tolls for the total of 3 bucks to get to Boston.

Everything so far that has been said makes it obvious that Portland is getting the C's. Up in Portland that is. The sports guys upstairs have Bill Ryan on a lot and it's almost a big joke now like we won't be getting them. So many hints. I'm not worried at all.

We got the Sox affiliate and now we're getting my C's. Sweet deal. Book it!

I love the Springfield Isotopes idea. Fox would definitely need to get involved with that though. Hey there is the Anaheim Mighty Ducks so it isn't that far fetched for a name to come from TV or Movies.

Return to Boston Celtics
