Giants Release Plaxico

Now if he doesn't go to jail and can be ready to play this season should we go after him? We should evaluate all our options at WR as we NEED to sign one and draft one.

Same deal as Matt Jones. It's hard to see Angelo going after a guy who was released because of trouble with the law after the Benson and Johnson releases. Cliff Levingston would love to get him though.

I say go and get Plaxico it would solve our WR problem plus in the draft one.

It all depends on the jail time. The minimum sentence is 3 1/2 yrs but I understand they're trying to get a plea bargain that still includes jail time. The longer it drags out, the less impact he's going to have in 2009.

Cutler to Burress would be un-friggin'-godly, though.

If it was a one year deal that was less then what Owens (probably considerably less with the off field antics) got I'd say take the risk. I still would probably go after Holt as well though.

I just cannot see Angelo signing Plaxico after the embarassment caused to the organization by Benson and Tank Johnson. He would look like a hypocrite.

Plaxico Burress Cut- should Bears go after him?

Post#7 » by NZB2323 » Fri Apr 3, 2009 8:36 pm

Should the Bears try and sing Plaxico Burress? He would be a great WR to pair with Jay Cutler.

I think the considerable talent difference needs to come into play....

Isn't Plaxico heading to jail soon? I'd do it because it would give us a sure #1 WR but will he even be able to play?

His trial is being postponed until June. He could face up to 4 years in jail.

And just to clear things up, I definitely want Plaxico but I don't think the Bears do.

The Giants cut him because he's going to be in jail. I'd be surprised if he does less than a year. The prosecutor will not want to look like they're doing favors for him because of his status. The mayor has already come out saying he should be treated like everyone else. I think they wish they didn't pass that law right about now.

I'd love to get him, but set your sites for 2010 cause I doubt he plays this year at all.

It's tempting, but too much trouble. He's Dallas bound. :D

At first I was like, 'yeah!', but then I found out he's going to face jail time. You'd think shooting yourself in the leg would be punishment enough - along with a Darwin award.

Are you asking, should Bears take a shot with him?

Sun-Times' Biggs on the subject :
If the Bears really want to go out and get a top-flight wide receiver, here is their chance.

The New York Giants just put Plaxico Burress on the market by cutting the controversial wideout and former Super Bowl champion who caught the winning touchdown in Super Bowl XLII.

Burress could be staring down some jail time after shooting a hole in his leg last November at a Manhattan night club. He's angling for a plea, reportedly, but it would still likely involve incarceration. If the Bears are willing to wait for a second fiddle defensive tackle like Tank Johnson to do some time in the poky, why not Burress? Just think of the long line of Halas Hall employees who could visit Burress in lockup, if he winds up there.

Burress is 31 but still has productive years ahead of him. He's a big target, he'll block downfield and even if he can't give you an entire season in 2009--the long arm of Roger Goodell has not reached him yet--he could be there moving forward.

The free-agent market is barren when it comes to top talent. There will be no sure thing in the draft at No. 49. The last time the Bears chose a wide receiver in the second round, they got Mark Bradley. What's worse? Putting up with some of the baggage Burress would bring to town or risking missing again in the draft at wide receiver. For review, check the chart we put together Thursday on general manager Jerry Angelo's track record drafting wideouts.

As connected as Jay Cutler and Earl Bennett were for one season at Vanderbilt, Bennett was a zero last season for the Bears. Bringing in Cutler alone isn't going to turn him into a top-flight receiver. That's also no sure thing. If the Bears are serious about their win-now approach, and dealing for Cutler and signing Orlando Pace indicates they are, then they have to consider Burress.

Burress wont be playing football this year . He will either be suspended or in jail and if the jail times means he misses all of next season Im almost sure he will be suspended for at least half of the following year .

We need to be on Holt and Furrey or maybe think about offering a contract to Lance Moore of the saints but hes restricted .

I'm confused. Wasn't Burress already suspended the last 4 games of last year for the shooting incident? Why would he be suspended further ?
