Jays make plans for reunion of '92, '93 champions

Post#1 » by LittleOzzy » Thu Apr 2, 2009 9:29 pm

It's been almost 16 years since Joe Carter hit his infamous walk-off home run at SkyDome to beat the Phillies in Game 6 of the 1993 World Series.

But to this day, the thought of winning back-to-back titles still resonates with the Blue Jays legend.

"Probably the biggest thing I got from that home run is CBS gave me a tape of every single camera that was rolling that night," said Carter at a press conference at Rogers Centre -- previously called SkyDome -- on Thursday morning. "And sure the home run was great, but to see the excitement from, one, my teammates, two, the fans -- listening to what people were saying, the sheer joy -- that's what a player lives for in baseball.

"Me running the bases, I thought that was secondary to all the players' and fans' responses."

Carter was speaking at the Summit Suite of the Blue Jays' home because, in a way, he wants to recapture the moment of that historic night.

Because of that, the former Toronto slugger has spearheaded a reunion of players and coaches from the 1992-93 back-to-back World Series championship teams for the Friday, Aug. 7 game against the Orioles.

Wow, that'd be SICK for a reunion... I wonder if we can also pry Mike Timlin away from the Red Sox for one day :)

I love the idea. But I feel like it's all a little forced. They've been doing the flashback Friday's, which have been cool because we get to focus on one guy. With this, it's not even like it's a 15th or 20th anniversary. It's just 2009 and the Jays are trying to remind people why they should care.

That's my negative spin.

On the positive, it's always good for the kids to learn about the championship teams. I don't want the 92/93 teams to be thought of the way I think of the old 67 Leafs team...too long ago to care.

I agree, it's been quite over-done... even reading Joe Carter's comments in the article, it's like I've heard those comments almost word-for-word through the years (after how NBC gave him all possible angle shots of the home run, etc).

Does anyone know if we're still doing the Flashback Friday's? At this rate, we're gonna be seeing random scrubs

I wonder how close Rogers is to trying to sell the Jays, and they just want to build the team up. With Uncle Ted out of the way....and the economy down.....can they afford to hang on to this lame property? CBC doesn't even want to broadcast the Jays. It's near impossible to win the East division. The SkyDome doesn't actually look any better with the renos a few years ago. Lots of negatives.
