Should Kings target Eddie Jordan, Thibodeau or someone else?

Post#1 » by campybatman » Sun Apr 5, 2009 3:49 am

I don't know, the Sacramento situation isn't all bad. The future head coach would inherit young talent in Kevin Martin and Spencer Hawes from which to build around. And the Kings will have a presumingly high lottery pick this year. Also, will have a (lottery protected) first round pick from Houston.

Fans will be crossing their fingers that their team can win this year's lottery. But, it becomes even more unlikely the longer the Kings remain with the league's worst record.

Ideally, Thibodeau can leave Boston after winning another championship. But, I prefer not to see him go. Still, he probably deserves a head coaching job.

The gossip around the league is that Eddie Jordan or Tom Thibodeau (New York assistant Phil Weber is among the long shots) could land in this job over the summer, though the Sacramento Bee reported on Friday that John Whisenant, the general manager and former coach of the WNBA's Sacramento Monarchs, would be "the unofficial front-runner" if the job were to come open, just as he was in 2006 when Eric Musselman was hired instead.

In any case, whoever is hired would become the fourth head coach Sacramento has had since Rick Adelman was let go in 2006. It wouldn't hurt Jordan's candidacy that the Kings are feeling all nostalgic these days, what with the lovefest they gave Vlade Divac on Tuesday, and Sacramento fans still remember that Jordan got his first head coaching gig at the end of the 1996-97 season when he was the replacement for the fired Garry St. Jean.

On the flip side, the Kings' economic situation is not a pretty picture, and the Maloofs (whose family fortune is closely tied to the fortunes of Wells Fargo, another bank receiving TARP funds) are still paying Musselman and Reggie Theus to sit home and watch games from their recliners. (They have a $1.5 million option on Natt for next season that can be exercised by early May.)

If Thibs goes to Sacramento he'll be setting himself up to fail.

Trying to get a bottom feeder team full of young players to think defense first would be a really tough task.

It gets even tougher when you consider that Sacramento doesn't have any good individual defenders.
Rondo doesn't believe in easy buckets...

I've to wonder if Thibodeau would even find Sacramento worthwhile. Perhaps, he should wait another year if he seriously want to be a head coach. The other possible openings aren't that appealing, in my opinion. As said, Thibodeau will want to have some defensive minded players already in place being a defensive minded coach.

Tibs is being paid the salary of a young head coach apparently. I don't see him leaving our team for Sacramento, but you never know.

Anyone know how long Thibodeau's contract is for?

Thibodeau makes enough sense for Sacramento. They have solid enough offensive talent and with good defensive schemes and a roster tweak or two they could at least boost morale nicely in the city of Sacramento. I'm not knowledgeable enough re:Spencer Hawes and other young guys like Jason Thompson to predict the franchise's future success.

I'm sorry but building a team around Kevin Martin and Spencer Hawes is a horrible idea. I like both players, Hawes especially. But you don't build franchises around 2nd and 3rd banana players.

For your information... I'm saying, build around as in adding to. Who else do they have...? I never said Martin and/or Hawes are their franchise players. Whatever. You're going to read it as you want.

Keeping Thibodeau would be great, but it's going to be hard to do. He needs to get a chance to lead a team soon I would think.
