OT: Nice places to take a date in DC

Post#1 » by Bill Bradley » Sat Apr 11, 2009 12:56 am

Hi Wiz fans. I'm visiting your city next week and have a date with a local there but I don't know where to take her. Basically, I want to take her someplace nice. Like go for a nice dinner and maybe to some sort of jazz club or other nice bar. It's okay if it's a bit pricey so long as it's not filled with aholes. I'm a vegetarian but don't need to go to a vegetarian place. Thanks in advance.

How about some fan mail to Blatche? He knows the best spots in town.

Will you be here during the week or the weekend? Since you are vege, I highly recommend you make a reservation for Rasika, a high-end Indian restaurant with a large vegetarian component. It is very popular so book in-advance.

An alternative is to go for some Ethiopian food in the Adams Morgan neighborhood in DC, I recommend Meskerem (They have a great vegetarian combo).

Not into Ethnic foods? Go to Clydes in Georgetown, there's always plenty to see/do in Georgetown.

Good luck!

1) yes on rasika!
2) ethiopian doesn't do it for me
3) clydes has steadily fallen from mediocre to plain gross. If you want to be in Georgetown, go to Bourbon Steak

Top 100 in the area with reviews, we have a local magazine called the Washingtonian that does dinner reviews.

Re: Clyde's. It's decent food, not very-good or excellent, but just good. People who are used to "American food" seem to like it and it's not too pricey. Bourbon Steak is $$, but probably a better choice if you have the cash.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the suggestions and will check some of them out when I am in town. A couple of people recommended Proof, so I might try that one. I lived in Adams Morgan for 4 years during grad school but couldn't afford to eat out back in those days :)

Proof is nice, great wine list, and the sweet breads are money. There aren't really any good music venues in that part of town (Penn Qtr), however, grab a cab to the U St. corrider and check out Bohemian Caverns for a laid back jazz tip.

Take her to Blues Alley, a historic jazz club in Georgetown. GREAT atmosphere, great music, decent food. I proposed to my wife there (Dianne Reeves performing that night). Also caught shows by Wynton Marsalis and Ahmad Jamal (among others).

Busboys & Poets (http://www.busboysandpoets.com/) is a good place to hang out. For after hours, check out Station9 (http://www.station9dc.com/) and Creme Cafe (http://www.cremedc.com/).

Yep, U street is the place to go. Twins Jazz, and Utopia are pretty cool places with live music. For dinner hit up Dukem or Straights of Malaysia.

Some good suggestions here. I've always been a fan of Blues Alley, and I also like Bohemian Caverns, if you're into jazz.

One place where I've taken a couple of dates was Tony Cheng's in Chinatown for the crucial Chinese food, and it's always gone over well.

I was in the Chinatown area a few months back, and took a chick to Zengo lounge (I think that's what it was called)...I'd never been there before, but we had a hell of a good time, and went to Lido's Irish Pub that night as well. She had a great time.
