Celtics coach Doc Rivers also said there was a chance injured big men Kevin Garnett, Leon Powe, and Brian Scalabrine could take part in drills on Saturday, but could not take part in 5-on-5 drills.

On the radio a couple of times today I have heard that KG and Powe have a decent shot at playing in the last 2 games. Doc is on the same page as us. Wants to get them at least a little bit of game time before they are thrown into the pit in the playoffs.

My feeling is that they could play right now if we wanted/needed them too. I think we are just being careful. The first round could probably be won easily with the guys we have now so why not hold off to get guys from 80% to 90%?

Kevin Garnett could return for the Celtics' final two games of the regular season. Garnett (right knee) will miss the Celtics' game against Miami Friday night, the 19th game he has missed since being injured Feb. 19.

"If we can run him 10-15 minutes, we will, if we think that will give him better rhythm," coach Doc Rivers said of Garnett's status for a Tuesday visit to Philadelphia. "For us, we'll use it as practice. Same for Leon (Powe).

Powe, recovering from a right knee strain, went through a 30-minute low-post drill with assistant coach Clifford Ray Friday morning and will participate in a full practice Monday.

Garnett, Powe, and Brian Scalabrine (cervical strain) are out for the Miami game but will travel with the team for visit to Cleveland (Sunday) and Philadelphia. The Celtics conclude the regular season against Washington next Wednesday.

Doc Rivers said today that Kevin Garnett will most likely return to action in the regular season finale against Washington on Wednesday.

When asked about the odds of Garnett playing in one of the C’s final two games (they play at Philadelphia on Tuesday), the Celtics coach said the Washington game is more likely because Garnett is expected to go through a full workout during Monday’s practice in Philadelphia.

Garnett has missed 19 of the past 23 games since spraining his right knee in Utah on Feb. 19. The power forward returned to the lineup for four games, but has been sidelined since March 25. Unlike that comeback, Rivers said Garnett will not face any restrictions on his minutes this time.

Just a question....

Why does KG have to start when he comes back?

Bird, McHale and Havilcek all at one time or another came off the bench as they were working back from injury and played a brief stint as sixth man.

I think KG could do the same until he rounds into form.

Thoughts??

Doc has that option but there is nothing in Doc's past that would indicate that he would explore this option. When his starters are healthy enough to play they'll always start. I'm not totally opposed to the idea but I think it smart to try to get KG back into the starting role to get that first unit together playing with great chemistry. Integrating KG into the bench lineup would be a much more difficult task.

KG has a million pre-game rituals...bringing him off the bench would upset all that. He's already battling being less than 100%, why would you want to force him into dealing with coming off the bench?

So Bird,McHale,Havilcek can come off the bench but the mighty KG can't because we'd mess up his pregame ritual??

Unbeliveable....

Maybe I'm making too much of it but I am under the impression that they're wanting to ease KG back into things so as to avoid another knee flare up and the sixth man role sounds ideal for that,at least for the first round.

I just worry that Doc will run his minutes up from the get go, blow the knee out and we're done.

Guess we'll find out soon enough if KG's knee is that gimpy or it's all just a smokescreen.

Look i understand that Bird/McHale/Havlicek did that but they had a different coach. Doc is entitled to his own way of going about things, and if that means getting KG playing against top competition, just deal with it. He probably could have "come off the bench" for half the games he's missed, it makes sense that if he didn't play in games he could have played in, then he can start when he is ready to play.

Another thing you aren't considering is warm-ups. In KG's first comeback attempt a few weeks ago, the reason they never put him back in for the 2nd or 4th quarters was that by then he had cooled off and that increased the risk of doing further damage. You'd run the same risk if he played with the second unit, having warmed up then sat on the bench for awhile before getting in the game.

And honestly...what would be the point of him coming off the bench? If he's going to play 30 minutes, whether he plays them with the 1st or 2nd unit doesn't really lessen his risk. It's not about him being "too good" to do what Mchale or Bird or whoever did, it's more...what would be the benefit of it?
