Get a desktop PC. You can get a pretty decent one for $500. I've never dropped one. I can replace a HD in about 20 min,and I usually have a couple of HDD's hooked up with Disc Director, several partitions and 2 bootable operating systems.
On your laptop...check that the connects between motherboard and HDD and motherboard and CD/DVD are not loose,also the power connects.
