Should we forgo WR for a later round? The argument for a pass rusher if a value guy falls is pretty big:
1. We have a need. Ogunleye is aging and only has a little more time left under contract, Mark Anderson is entering his last year, and we totally underperformed in getting sacks from the DL last year.
2. We have probably the two best off season additions when it comes to providing grade-A development to a young DE. Rod Marinelli as the DL coach, and Orlando Pace as the LT a young DE will have to work against during training camp.
Michael Johnson has unique size/speed/strength to make him an ideal prospect if he falls. Also, if he falls, its possible its because there was a run on WRs which would make the value of selecting one at 49 substantially less. Just food for thought.

I would be happy with picking Johnson or another defender provided the receivers like Nicks and Robiskie are gone.
Another DE I like who's not quite the freak Michael Johnson is but is much less risky is Paul Kruger from Utah.

Cliff Levingston is hoping Nicks falls to us at #49 but wouldn't be surprised if Angelo goes with a defensive end like Johnson if he's there as well (or if he's there and Nicks is not, etc).

If we go for a DE at 49, it might mean Marinelli doesn't think we have the guys in house to get the job done. It would worry me, but I'd actually be happy with that pick. We could probably get the same WR at 99 that we'd select at 49 (I'm assuming Johnson dropping would mean a run on WR)

Re: If Michael Johnson falls to 49...
I think you'd have to take him if he drops to 49. Alex Brown dropped to the 4th when he graded out as 1st round talent, so he'd be a great mentor for him.
If that's the case, then I look closer at taking 2 WRs in the subsequent rounds. The guys are more speculative there, but Derrick Williams, Brandon Tate, Mike Wallace, Ramses Barden and others all look like they have some potential so you hope we hit on one of them and sign a veteran WR as well.

At # 49 we need a diffence maker!!
I would take the Highest Rated Player at any of the following positions:
WR (Davis, Bennett)
DE (Ogunleye)
FS (Bullocks, Bowman)
OLB (Roach, Hillenmeyer)

If he's there, I wouldn't mind picking him up. He is a freak and did work out well and a hands on development coach like Marinelli might help him.
Now, if a good WR (Robsikie, Nicks etc) or like a good FS was there...I donno.

Could've sworn we had this exact same topic elsewhere but I'd take him if one of the top WRs didn't slip. He looks like more of an athlete than a football player but at #49 that's good value.
Turn down for what?
