Kings 1st round from Atlanta????

Post#1 » by JoshKingsFan » Mon Apr 13, 2009 9:28 pm

This may seem odd and I don't know why I thought of it, but in 2002 the Kings traded their first round draft pick to the Atlanta Hawks for a future first round pick. I don't think the Kings have ever received this pick.

Here are the Kings recent draft picks:
Thompson (08),
Hawes (07),
Douby (06),
Garcia (05),
Martin (04),
no pick 2003,
2002 trade to Atlanta.

Does anyone know if the Kings have ever received this pick and if not, when is the future pick due from Atlanta? Or did we trade this pick?

Just curious.

Thanks for any help on this.

We traded it.

Sometime ago an interesting situation came up. We owed the Pistons a 1st rounder (Jon Barry for Mateen Cleeves trade); the Pistons owed the Hawks a 1st rounder (I believe from the Rasheed Wallace trade); and the Hawks owed us a 1st rounder (from the Dan Dickau trade). All picks had varying degrees of protection on them. So 1 day the 3 GMs got together and said "let's squash these future picks now and keep our own picks". So, since it was a circle of pick swapping, each team got back their own pick.

Hadn't heard that story before, makes sense though.

If you're referring to Dan Dickau, then that was to pay an old debt(I believe Nick Anderson deal with Orlando) that got shipped to ATL from Orlando. So it wasn't a future pick, but rather a previous debt.

The pick you got from Atlanta for Dickau was a 2003 first rounder. The pick was originally the Pistons one, but it had been dealt many times dating back to 1997 - first from Detroit to Philly as a part of the Ratliff/Stackhouse swap, then from Philly to Houston in 1999 in exchange for the rights to Mirsad Turkcan, then in 2001 it was dealt from Houston to Atlanta for the rights to Terence Morris.......and then in 2002 it was dealt to you for Dickau. And then you traded it along with Jon Barry for Mateen Cleaves.

Your own 2003 pick was traded along with Tariq Abdul-Wahad for Nick Anderson back in 1999.
