Gaston hopes Jays cut down on walks

Post#1 » by LittleOzzy » Tue Apr 14, 2009 8:21 pm

Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston has grown tired of watching opposing hitters trot slowly down to first base. While the Jays have been off to a strong start this season, walks have been an unfortunate theme for Toronto's pitching staff, and it is a trend that will only hurt the team as the season wears on.

Entering Monday's game against the Twins, the Blue Jays had issued 33 walks this season -- the highest total in the American League. In the opener of a four-game set against Minnesota, Toronto walked another two batters to pad that total.

Given the Twins' knack for stealing bases and bunting runners over, Gaston wants to see the number of freebies reduced as the series continues.

"They're a tough team," said Gaston, referring to the Twins. "It's a tough team to beat. They've got speed, so it will be a test for our young guys to keep them close to the bag and keep them off the bags."

I think with the starting pitching rotation being so poor that a lot of walks may become the norm during Jays games this season.

The issue in the past was whether we could throw out baserunners. What's expected out of Barajas and Barrett this season?

Also, I like how Cito picks up on these trivial things as room for improvement. Next up....let's give up fewer hits.
