Tillery's article on Conley
http://www.commercialappeal.com/news/20 ... ey-excels/
Credit to Hollins that Conley has improve during his tenure during the last couple of months. And when did Tillery get on the Conley train? Like he's God's gift to basketball. "I told you so." Sounds like a six yr old who can get away with that argument. Not a bougie beat writer. With the way Conley been playing, it comes down to 1 to 3 things for me.
1. Princeton style offense- Conley's improve game would best fit in that scheme. Rick Adelman ran this well when he was in Sactown. Eddie Jordan ran this style wit hthe Wizards until his dismissal early this season. Reason being is that the PG in that system doesn't have to emphasis a lot of his assist game into the style. Mike Bibby and Gilbert Arenas can attest to this scenario. With Bibby, he had C-Webb, Divac, and Miller who commanded double teams or were naturally gifted passers from the post who can set up their teammates to help relive Bibby from having to rely heavily on his passing game in the Princeton style offense. With Arenas, same style, had Eddie Jordan as the coach. Had help in the assist department with Caron Butler and Larry Hughes when he was there. Arenas being the PG didn't have to put emphasis into the passing game for the Wizards b/c he had teammates who are/were capable of passing the ball and getting teammates involve on offense. This current Grizzlies team simply does not have the luxury right now in terms of having a workable passing game on their side.
2. The only way Mike Conley truly translates to Tony Parker is that he plays with a fundamental big man like Tim Duncan who can command double teams on game nights. When the double teams happen, TD can kick the ball out to the open man near or around the perimeter for the open shot. Another option is that Conley can slash to the hole and score some points on the dribble drive to the post.
3. Grizzlies still lack a passing game. So as much as Conley's game improved offensively, the Grizzlies passing game is still in the crapper. The team is young, lacks better veterans who really know how to play and win games they know they have to win. Depending on the system, as a PG you need to have a good assist/turnover ratio and know where your teammates can shoot the ball from. Sorta like a helpme/helpyou scenario. Until that part of the game improves for the Grizzlies. All the "I told you so"
is a bunch of bulls**t. Find a better PG who know how to involve his teammates like Jason Kidd, Steve Nash, and Chris Paul do on game nights. Mike Conley despite his improve is not the answer.

Re: Tillery's article on Conley
And when did Tillery get on the Conley train?
Tillery has been on Conley's dick ever since he was drafted. He was the one who wrote the infamous "Fine Grizzlies, trade Conley; you will regret it" article when the Bucks were talking about acquiring Conley for Ramon Sessions and Joe Alexander. In hindsight, that trade would have been (Please Use More Appropriate Word) for Memphis to make, so I guess he was right on that one.

Re: Tillery's article on Conley
Vernon went OFF today about that article. Called Tillery a clown. Whether you like/agree with Verno, it was some class-A funny stuff.
Vernon also pointed out that statistically, only counting since Hollins took over, Sessions has been demoted and still smokes Conley.
Edit - that said, I still contend we only trade Conley at this point for a 4.

Wolves poster here.
On the Wolves board I've expressed an interest in Conley. I think he would be a perfect fit in the Wolves offense. I'm wondering, what would it take to pry him away? Or would that be too difficult at this juncture as he's finally showing signs of turning the corner.
Would a package of Randy Foye + Craig Smith be of interest?
Also available could be Gomes, Telfair, Miami's #1, Boston's #1, Utah's 2010 #1 (top 15 protected).

Just curious, how has Telfair's game been with the Wolves to this point?

I heard it all today. It would be boring if Verno did a show w/o a tirade involve. In this case with Tillery and his write up on Conley being roasted on radio earlier today. As for Ramon Sessions, if the Grizz can trade Conley off to another team, I say grab Sessions as long as the price is reasonable.

Re: Tillery's article on Conley
Verno cracks me up. I'm glad he is going after Tillery. I used to really dislike Conley. I still think Crittenton is better NBA guard. But I'm extremely biased towards all Georgia Tech players.
Of course I am finally coming around on Conley with what he's achieved this year.
I was really hoping we'd get Al Horford from that draft. Imagine that team: Lowry, Miller/Navaroo, Gay, Horford, P.Gasol. OH WELL
I believed then THaddeus Young, Noah, Thornton would be better than Conley on that draft. I didn't ever see exactly what they liked about him at Ohio State. It was all Greg Oden buzz to me. Cook was the better shooter I thought. I guess it was all "UPSIDE". Would the Grizzlies have done better picking Noah over Conley? That would be interesting and I know a lot of the fans would have been angry but I say a champion is a champion.
I certainly did not expect Rodney Stuckey, Aaron Brooks, and Ramon Sessions to surpass the #4 pick from that draft though! And since we play the Hawks next, don't they regret Acie Law IV? Has there ever been a good pro from the Aggies?

It's been a mixed bag. His shooting % tends to infuriate a lot of people, and he really never stops shooting. On top of that, he'll always have his defensive limitations. However, when he's in the game he's really good at running our offense and the rest of our team improves around him. On the plus side, he's shown enough to establish he belongs in the league, he's been a good kid, and he's still improving.

Re: Tillery's article on Conley
I was crushed when the Grizz got jobbed on not getting Horford. Personally I'm still not sold on Noah, and I'm not sure what Thad Young would have done to the mix here - although I LOVE his game. Thornton would likely have ended up has Hak 2.0 here. Miscast as the tweener 4.

Since we're going retro here, what would it have been like if the Grizzlies stayed with their pick last year and took Kevin Love and then selected James Harden this year?

I think you spelled a name wrong. It should be Love, not Foye. That's where my interest would be. Other than that, no thank you.
This article by Tillery was even worse IMO. Sounded like something that should have been in a blog.

And that's my first time reading the article in the OP so I see what Vernon was talking about.

Props to you bg on the big mention you got on Verno's show - rattin' out Wallace for not going to bat for Vernon. VERY funny stuff.

Re: Tillery's article on Conley
Considering it's Verno we're talkin about here. He can take care of himself w/o any help from Wallace nor anyone else. Maybe CW could've said a little something there, but he was only ridin out the storm and not get struck by lightning.

Re: Tillery's article on Conley
I don't think he was being serious at all SD. It's pretty obvious that Vernon and Wallace have a very good relationship. The best part of the show yesterday was Wallace doing the Vernon parody - almost wet myself I was laughing so hard.

Did you watch the NCAA tournament that year? That's where Conley blew up...he was the best pg in the nation by the end of the season. Although I realize it is hard to see that if you're biased towards a school.

LOL. Yeah I knew Verno would get a kick out of it. I had been so busy that I didn't get to tell him the next day so I made sure to get home ASAP the next Wednesday to bring it up.
